The authors of this paper use an original method of diatomaceous earth fractionation, which allows for obtaining a filler with a specific particle size distribution. find more The method makes it possible to separate small, disintegrated and broken diatom frustules from those which maintained their original form in diatomaceous earth. The study covers a range of tests conducted to prove that such a separated diatomic fraction (3-30 µm) shows features different from the base diatomite (from 1 to above 40 µm) used as an epoxy resin filler. We have examined the mechanical properties of a series of diatomite/resin composites, considering the weight fraction of diatoms and the parameters of the composite production process. The studied composites of Epidian 601 epoxy resin cross-linked with amine-based curing agent Z-1 contained 0 to 70% vol. of diatoms or diatomaceous earth. Samples were produced by being casted into silicone molds in vacuum degassing conditions and, alternatively, without degassing. The results have shown that the size and morphology of the filler based on diatomaceous earth affects mechanical and rheological properties of systems based on epoxy resin. Elongation at rupture and flexural stress at rupture were both raised by up to 35%, and impact strength by up to 25%.The prevalence of fungal infections has increased in immunocompromised patients, leading to millions of deaths annually. Arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites, such as eicosanoids, play important roles in regulating innate and adaptative immune function, particularly since they can function as virulence factors enhancing fungal colonization and are produced by mammalian and lower eukaryotes, such as yeasts and other fungi (Candida albicans, Histoplasma capsulatum and Cryptococcus neoformans). C. albicans produces prostaglandins (PG), Leukotrienes (LT) and Resolvins (Rvs), whereas the first two have been well documented in Cryptococcus sp. and H. capsulatum. In this review, we cover the eicosanoids produced by the host and fungi during fungal infections. These fungal-derived PGs have immunomodulatory functions analogous to their mammalian counterparts. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) protects C. albicans and C. parapsilosis cells from the phagocytic and killing activity of macrophages. H. capsulatum PGs augment the fungal burden and host mortality rates in histoplasmosis. However, PGD2 potentiates the effects and production of LTB4, which is a very potent neutrophil chemoattractant that enhances host responses. Altogether, these data suggest that eicosanoids, mainly PGE2, may serve as a new potential target to combat diverse fungal infections. This retrospective study was conducted to investigate the clinical factors associated with low-contrast visual acuity after reduced-fluence photodynamic therapy (RFPDT) in patients with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and good baseline visual acuity. A total of 45 eyes of 45 patients with resolved CSC at post-RFPDT and best-corrected visual acuity of >1.0 (logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution [logMAR], 0) at baseline were examined. Visual acuities of both eyes were measured at four contrast levels (100%, 25%, 12%, and 6%) at post-RFPDT. The low-contrast visual acuity (6%, 12%, and 25%) was significantly lower than the 100% contrast visual acuity in the affected eyes. Visual acuities of affected eyes were significantly worse than those of fellow eyes at any contrast levels. The degree of changes in 6% and 100% contrast visual acuities was significantly greater in affected eyes than that in fellow eyes (p less then 0.05). The 6% contrast visual acuities in affected eyes at post-RFPDT were significantly associated with the symptom duration (p less then 0.05). Patients with a long duration of symptoms might have disturbed low-contrast visual acuities at post-RFPDT even if their baseline visual acuities were good.Experimental investigations on 12 push-off specimens with dimensions of 600 × 300 × 180 mm (200 × 180 mm shear plane) were presented. Models reflected the connection between ordinary concrete (NWC) substrate and lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) overlay. The main purpose of the study was to investigate behaviour of the interface between concretes cast at different times. Two different interface conditions were considered Smooth and rough (obtained by graining). In the selected elements, additional reinforcement consisting of one ∅8 bar was injected. The elements were tested under load control. The failure of the specimens without interface reinforcement was violent and resulted from breaking of the adhesive bond. Specimens with shear reinforcement failed in a ductile manner, however, due to the low reinforcement area, the residual load capacity was much lower than the load recorded just before cracking. It was found that mechanical roughening of the surface can lead to degradation of the concrete structure. As a result, the load-carrying capacities of elements with smooth interface proved to be higher than the ultimate loads of elements with deliberately roughened contacts. Comparative analysis showed that the existing design procedures ACI 318-19, Eurocode 2, Model Code 2010, and AASHTO can lead to safe but conservative estimation of the actual resistance of the concrete interface.Alginate, a major acidic polysaccharide in brown algae, has attracted great attention as a promising carbon source for biorefinery systems. Alginate lyases, especially exo-type alginate lyase, play a critical role in the biorefinery process. Although a large number of alginate lyases have been characterized, few can efficiently degrade alginate comprised of mannuronate (M) and guluronate (G) at low temperatures by means of an exolytic mode. In this study, the gene of a new exo-alginate lyase-Alys1-with high activity (1350 U/mg) was cloned from a marine strain, Tamlana sp. s12. When sodium alginate was used as a substrate, the recombinant enzyme showed optimal activity at 35 °C and pH 7.0-8.0. Noticeably, recombinant Alys1 was unstable at temperatures above 30 °C and had a low melting temperature of 56.0 °C. SDS and EDTA significantly inhibit its activity. These data indicate that Alys1 is a cold-adapted enzyme. Moreover, the enzyme can depolymerize alginates polyM and polyG, and produce a monosaccharide as the minimal alginate oligosaccharide.
