Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with higher risk of stroke. While the prevalence of AF is low in the general population, risk prediction models might identify individuals for selective screening of AF. We aimed to systematically identify and compare the utility of established models to predict prevalent AF.

Systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE for risk prediction models for AF. We adapted established risk prediction models and assessed their predictive performance using data from 2.5M individuals who attended vascular screening clinics in the USA and the UK and in the subset of 1.2M individuals with CHA2DS2-VASc ≥2. We assessed discrimination using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves and agreement between observed and predicted cases using calibration plots. After screening 6959 studies, 14 risk prediction models were identified. In our cohort, 10464 (0.41%) participants had AF. For discrimination, six prediction model had AUROC curves of 0.70 or above in all individuals and those with CHA2DS2-VASc ≥2. In these models, calibration plots showed very good concordance between predicted and observed risks of AF. The two models with the highest observed prevalence in the highest decile of predicted risk, CHARGE-AF and MHS, showed an observed prevalence of AF of 1.6% with a number needed to screen of 63. Selective screening of the 10% highest risk identified 39% of cases with AF.

Prediction models can reliably identify individuals at high risk of AF. The best performing models showed an almost fourfold higher prevalence of AF by selective screening of individuals in the highest decile of risk compared with systematic screening of all cases.

Although low electrocardiographic QRS voltages (LQRSV) detected by 12-lead resting ECG have historically been acknowledged by physicians, in view of recent evidence on the demonstration of myocardial scar by cardiac magnetic resonance and its relevance as a cause of sudden cardiac death even in young individuals, a new interest has been raised about the utility of LQRSV in the clinical practice. Beyond their diagnostic value, LQRSV have also demonstrated a prognostic role in different cardiomyopathies. The present review summarizes the diagnostic and prognostic value of LQRSV in cardiomyopathies, reporting the new evidence, primarily based on advanced imaging studies, supporting the clinical utility of this parameter.
To understand determinants of oral health inequalities, multilevel modelling is a useful manner to study contextual factors in relation to individual oral health. Several studies outside Europe have been performed so far, however, contextual variables used are diverse and results conflicting. MRTX1133 Therefore, this study investigated whether neighbourhood level differences in oral health exist, and whether any of the neighbourhood characteristics used were associated with oral health.

This study is embedded in The Generation R Study, a prospective cohort study conducted in The Netherlands. In total, 5 960 6-year-old children, representing 158 neighbourhoods in the area of Rotterdam, were included. Data on individual and neighbourhood characteristics were derived from questionnaires, and via open data resources. Caries was assessed via intraoral photographs, and defined as decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft).

Although the adverse cardiovascular effect of anaemia has been well described, the effect of polycythaemia on the cardiovascular outcomes of the general population remain unclear. The primary objective is to identify the association between polycythaemia and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and the secondary objective is to identify the specific haemoglobin concentration more associated with an increased risk for MACE.

This was a retrospective cohort study, 451 107 subjects were enrolled who underwent national health examinations from the Korean National Sample Cohort. We estimated the risk of MACE, a composite of cardiovascular mortality, incident myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke according to haemoglobin-based four categories. During 3.8-year of follow-up, polycythaemia group showed higher MACE [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.27 (1.13-1.44) and HR = 1.76 (1.08-2.88); in men and women, respectively], incident MI [HR = 1.37 (1.05-1.79) and HR = 3.46 (1.06-14.00)], and incident ischaemic stroke [HR ntly associated with higher rates of MACE, incident MI, and incident ischaemic stroke. Especially, subjects with haemoglobin levels ≥15.0 g/dL in women and ≥16.5 g/dL among men were associated with increased risks of MACE.
Oncostatin M (OSM) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and as a marker for nonresponsiveness to anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy. We further unraveled the potential of OSM and related receptors as markers of diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy response in IBD.

We collected inflamed mucosal biopsies and serum from patients with Crohn disease (CD) and with ulcerative colitis (1) newly diagnosed patients who were treatment-naïve, (2) patients initiating anti-TNF or (3) vedolizumab therapy, (4) postoperative patients with CD, and (5) multiple-affected families with IBD including unaffected first-degree relatives (FDRs). We measured the gene expression of mucosal OSM and its receptors OSMR/LIFR and co-receptor IL6ST, and the protein expression of serum OSM. Statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05.
