Specifically, Monitored Zone with High-risk Pollution had the highest NCPI caused by human activities, while Controlled Zone with Severe Pollution had relatively high NCPI caused by industrial and agricultural production. Protected Zone with Ecological Conservation and Restricted Zone with Potential Pollution had low NCPIs attributing to historical or natural factors. Our study implies that the classified zones can provide fundamental and momentous information for establishing appropriate priorities of heavy metal risk management and control.Soil contamination by heavy metals is becoming a serious environmental problem especially in saline and sodic soils and information on different fractions of metals is useful to predict their mobility and availability in soil. Addition of organic amendments, as an important technique to remediation of metals has been considered recently. Therefore, the effect of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on cadmium (Cd) fractions in saline, sodic, saline-sodic and normal soils were evaluated through an incubation experiment using sequential extraction. Treatments included biochar (0, 2, and 4 wt %) of sugarcane bagasse and 50 mg Cd kg-1 with three replications. EIDD-2801 in vitro In all studied soils with 2 and 4% biochar application, the organic matter fraction was the dominant form of Cd. Biochar had no significant influence on exchangeable Cd in normal and sodic soils. Whereas, application of 2 and 4% biochar increased exchangeable Cd concentration in saline and saline-sodic soils probably due to high capacity of biochar to sorb salts that mitigate the negative effects of salts in soil solution. The mobility factor (MF) of Cd in studied soils was high (20-50%). The MF value decreased with the increase of biochar dosage. According to reduced partition index, Cd was partitioned in all fractions. Based on these results, biochar can mitigate the effect of Cd pollution in these soils.
There is growing interest in the biomedical research community to incorporate retrospective data, available in healthcare systems, to shed light on associations between different biomarkers. Understanding the association between various types of biomedical data, such as genetic, blood biomarkers, imaging, etc. can provide a holistic understanding of human diseases. To formally test a hypothesized association between two types of data in Electronic Health Records (EHRs), one requires a substantial sample size with both data modalities to achieve a reasonable power. Current association test methods only allow using data from individuals who have both data modalities. Hence, researchers cannot take advantage of much larger EHR samples that includes individuals with at least one of the data types, which limits the power of the association test.
We present a new method called the Semi-paired Association Test (SAT) that makes use of both paired and unpaired data. In contrast to classical approaches, incorporating unpaired data allows SAT to produce better control of false discovery and to improve the power of the association test. We study the properties of the new test theoretically and empirically, through a series of simulations and by applying our method on real studies in the context of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We are able to identify an association between the high-dimensional characterization of Computed Tomography (CT) chest images and several blood biomarkers as well as the expression of dozens of genes involved in the immune system.

Previous studies have shown the intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with low rates of obesity and ischemic pathologies. Omega-3 also have anti-inflammatory and plaque-stabilization effects and regulate vasodilation and constriction. However, there are few studies of the role of omega-3 in flow-induced vasodilation involving Ca2+-permeable ion channel TRPV4 in high-fat diet-induced obese (DIO) mouse. Here, we determined whether omega-3 protect against vascular dysfunction induced by high-fat diet by enhancing TRPV4 activity and subsequently improving flow-mediated vasodilation.
Flow-mediated vasodilation in 2nd-order mesenteric arteries from mice was measured using a pressure myograph. The intracellular Ca2+ concentration in response to flow and GSK1016790A (a TRPV4 agonist) was measured by Fluo-4 fluorescence. Whole-cell current was measured by patch clamp. Cell membrane tether force was measured by atomic force microscopy. Impairment of flow-mediated vasodilation in arteries and ategy of improving vascular function under obesity, namely, by targeting TRPV4 via the usage of omega-3.
Omega-3 improve the endothelial function via enhancing TRPV4 activity and augmenting the endothelial-dependent flow-induced vasodilation in DIO mice resistance arteries. This study provides a strategy of improving vascular function under obesity, namely, by targeting TRPV4 via the usage of omega-3.Within epidemiological and intervention studies, whole grain consumption has generally shown positive associations with reductions in markers of overweight and obesity. However, studies use varied methods of determining whole grain intake, including different definitions of a whole grain food, which may explain varied results. This systematic review aimed to identify how different methods of reporting and calculating whole grain intake, including whole grain food definitions, affect reported associations between whole grain intake and body weight measures in adults. Systematic searching of PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and MEDLINE (all years to 11 June, 2020) identified eligible studies. Cohort and cross-sectional studies assessing whole grain intake and body weight measures in adults were included. Studies that did not specify methods used to calculate whole grain intake were excluded. Twenty-one cross-sectional studies (from 24 articles) and 9 prospective cohort studies (from 7 articles) were included in the review.
