The impacts of reservoirs on the water, sediment and nutrient trapping in the Lancang River have attracted considerable attention, both locally and abroad. In this research, watershed-scale nitrogen load and nitrate sources along the Lancang River upstream in free-flowing reaches (FFRs) and downstream regulated reaches (RRs) were analyzed using stable nitrogen and oxygen isotopes. The results showed that the nitrogen nutrient (TN, NO3- and NH4+) concentration increased from upstream to downstream along the Lancang River, and the highest values come from large-scale urban samples rather than the reservoirs. Compared to other large rivers in China, such as the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Yalu Tsangpo River, nitrogen nutrient content in the Lancang River is at low level. The nitrate concentration ranged from 0.14 mg/L to 0.63mg/Land increased significantly downstream. The isotopic values ranged from 2.8‰ to 5.2‰ for δ15N-NO3- and from 4‰ to 8.5‰ for δ18O-NO3- along the river, and the δ15N-NO3- value rose significantly downstream. According to the nitrogen and oxygen isotope approach, soil organic nitrogen mineralization was the main source of the nitrate with an average of 51% contribution; domestic sewage was the second largest contributor with an average of 33% but increase downstream, likely due to the significantly larger population in the downstream region. Furthermore, the nitrate concentration decreased and δ15N- and δ18O-NO3- enriched in the Nuozhadu reservoir, indicating that the reservoir may enhance nitrate consumption and reduce nitrogen pollution to downstream reaches. The results provide a perspective of nitrogen nutrient for the trans-border river management and more insight researches are called for understanding the controversial nutrient transport topic in this region.Sulphide is one of the inhibitors in the nitrification process in WWTP in regions with sulphate rich soils. As little information is currently available on sulphide nitrification inhibition, the aim of this study was to develop a method based on a modification of the Successive Additions Method to calibrate the effect of sulphide on the activity of ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). The developed method was then applied to activated sludge samples from two WWTPs with different influent sulphide concentrations. In both cases, sulphide had a greater inhibitory effect on NOB than AOB activity. The sulphide inhibition was found to be lower in the activated sludge fed with sulphide-rich wastewater. The AOB and NOB activity measured at different sulphide concentrations could be accurately modelled with the Hill inhibition equation.Transport cost on road is an important limiting factor in the development of biomass energy. At present, transport cost on road is typically calculated using the average slope derived from the elevational difference between two points on a 2D road network, but this method ignores terrain relief, which is an important factor that influences road slope and vehicle fuel consumption. This study explores the effect of terrain relief on transport cost on road to provide data support for the optimization of transportation routes for biomass raw materials. By setting sample points at different intervals along a transportation route to accommodate different reliefs, the results showed that terrain relief was positively correlated with the unit distance transport cost on road by truck of biomass raw materials. When the sample interval was less than 500 m, the unit distance transport cost on road decreased rapidly with an increase in sample interval, and the rate of decline in hilly areas was greater than that in plains areas. When the sample interval was greater than 500 m, the unit distance transport cost on road decreased slowly and approached a stable level as the sample interval increased. In hilly areas, the transport cost on road of biomass raw materials and the relief effect were greater than those in plains areas. Therefore, when calculating the transport cost on road of biomass raw materials, we recommend using sample intervals less than 500 m to achieve a more accurate calculation and maintain a relatively small calculation load.Since the parties to Paris agreement ink ambitious emissions reduction targets, there is a growing debate - whether the existing environmental regulations have potential to spur enough technological base that could help to achieve the targets by 2030? The highest OLR decreased UASB reactor biodiversity, hampering Euryarchaeota population development (2.5%) and boosting Firmicutes (55%) and Proteobacteria (14%). These results demonstrated the suitability of UASB reactor configuration to reach high bioprocess efficiency for both, biogas and SCFAs production, with lower energetic and area requirements than those normally needed in continuous stirred tank reactors.
