How to Get an ADHD Assessment on the NHS
In an NHS evaluation medical professionals will ask you questions about your symptoms and how they impact your life. You'll also be asked about your family background and general health.
You can also get an ADHD evaluation privately. Certain private healthcare providers provide this service via the Right to Choose pathway.
Your GP
If you suspect that you or someone you know suffers from ADHD the first port of call is to speak to your GP. Your GP will take your concerns seriously and will want to know about your symptoms. They will then send you to an ADHD clinic for an assessment.
This clinic will evaluate your symptoms and formulate an appropriate treatment plan, which includes medications (if required) and therapy. In this process, your doctor will also identify other medical and psychological conditions that can trigger similar symptoms. They will collect information from you and others, such as teachers, family members or your colleagues. You will be asked to fill out a range of forms and questionnaires. For instance the ASRS Version 1 from the World Health Organisation. It is a good idea to prepare this in advance, to make sure you bring it with you to your appointment.
Your GP is legally required to pay for an ADHD assessment under Right To Choose - but they are not necessarily familiar with the process and may have difficulties obtaining this. We suggest that you present your GP the support letter from ADHD UK. It is available here.
If you attend your appointment, you will be asked to give an extensive description of your symptoms and the problems they cause in various situations, like at school or at work. You will be asked to give instances of when your symptoms have caused you to face problems or interruptions in your life. For adults, this may include childhood incidents.
If your diagnosis shows that you suffer from ADHD and your psychiatrist will write to your GP with a form for an agreement on shared care. Your GP will then be responsible for prescribing any medication you require - and may suggest CBT therapy to help you manage your symptoms.
After you have received your diagnosis, you will be able to gain access to assistance services, such as reasonable adjustments or Disabled Students' Allowance at university and, if needed you should submit a request to the DVLA for an exemption from driving restrictions. Your psychiatrist can also recommend you to a psychologist who will provide additional support, depending on your needs.
