The induction of defense-related genes, and of genes involved in the synthesis of the secoiridoid oleuropein, was also analyzed and revealed a significant variation of gene expression according to the strain or metabolite applied.Insulation faults in high-voltage applications often generate partial discharges (PDs) accompanied by corona activity, optical radiation mainly in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible bands. Recent developments in low-cost, small-size, and high-resolution visible imaging sensors, which are also partially sensitive to the UV spectral region, are gaining attention due to their many industrial applications. This paper proposes a method for early PD detection by using digital imaging sensors, which allows the severity of insulation faults to be assessed. The electrical power dissipated by the PDs is correlated to the energy of the acquired visible images, and thus, the severity of insulation faults is determined from the energy of the corona effect. A criterion to quantify the severity of insulation faults based on the energy of the corona images is proposed. To this end, the point-to-plane gap configuration is analyzed in a low-pressure chamber, where digital image photographs of the PDs are taken and evaluated under different pressure conditions ranging from 10 to 100 kPa, which cover the typical pressure range of aeronautic applications. The use of digital imaging sensors also allows an early detection, location and quantification of the PD activity, and thus assessing the severity of insulation faults to perform predictive maintenance tasks, while enabling the cost and complexity of the instrumentation to be reduced. Although the approach proposed in this paper has been applied to detect PDs in aeronautic applications, it can be applied to many other high-voltage applications susceptible of PD occurrence.Sequence variants in genes involved in the immune system have previously been linked to neutropenia as well as infections in cancer patients. Sequence variants in genes coding for TLR4, MBL, and IL-1Ra were investigated in relation to clinical utility of identifying severe episodes of febrile neutropenia (FN) in a cohort of children undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The study included 122 children, where data on FN and microbiological findings were retrospectively collected from medical records. Sequence variants in genes coding for MBL, TLR4, and IL-1Ra were identified by pyrosequencing, TaqMan SNP genotyping assay, and gel electrophoresis. A total of 380 episodes of FN were identified and in 139 episodes, there was a microbiological defined infection. Age and treatment intensity were all associated with the risk of developing FN. No sequence variant was associated to increased numbers of FN episodes. Two sequence variants in the TLR4 gene increased the risk of viral infection, whilst sequence variants in the IL-1Ra gene were associated to a decreased risk of bacterial blood-stream infection (BSI). The investigated sequence variants did not associate with increased risk for FN or to severe infections, as to why the clinical utility as a risk-stratification tool is low. Most episodes of FN were classified as fever with unknown origin, emphasizing the need for improved microbial detection methods. In solving the issue of basal stem rot diseases caused by Ganoderma, an investigation of Scytalidium parasiticum as a biological control agent that suppresses Ganoderma infection has gained our interest, as it is more environmentally friendly. Recently, the fungal co-cultivation has emerged as a promising method to discover novel antimicrobial metabolites. In this study, an established technique of co-culturing Scytalidium parasiticum and Ganoderma boninense was applied to produce and induce metabolites that have antifungal activity against G. boninense. The crude extract from the co-culture media was applied to a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) preparative column to isolate the bioactive compounds, which were tested against G. boninense. The fractions that showed inhibition against G. check details boninense were sent for a Liquid Chromatography-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) analysis to further identify the compounds that were responsible for the microbicidal activity. Interestingly, we found that eudistomin I, naringenin 7-O-beta-D-glucoside and penipanoid A, which were present in different abundances in all the active fractions, except in the control, could be the antimicrobial metabolites. In addition, the abundance of fatty acids, such as oleic acid and stearamide in the active fraction, also enhanced the antimicrobial activity. This comprehensive metabolomics study could be used as the basis for isolating biocontrol compounds to be applied in oil palm fields to combat a Ganoderma infection.Invasions of non-native species can threaten native biodiversity, and island ecosystems are ideal for studying these phenomena. In this article, first, we report on the invasive species that combine to threaten the island cycad Cycas micronesica by reviewing the history of previously reported invasions and providing an update of recent invasions. Then, we prioritize the threat status of each herbivore and the interactions among them. Plant damage was initiated in 2003─2005 by the non-native Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi armored scale, Erechthias sp. Meyrick leaf miner, and Luthrodes pandava Horsfield butterfly, which elicited unprecedented irruptions of the native Acalolepta marianarum Aurivillius stem borer and increased herbivory by feral pigs (Sus scrofa L.). The combined impact of these five consumers represents the greatest sustained threat to the cycad tree species. Mitigation of the damage caused by phytophagous non-native species is urgently needed to conserve this unique gymnosperm tree.Physical resource allocation strategy is a key factor affecting the performance of a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), which serves as a network model widely used in the sensor and detection field. For various perceived service information, it is significant for the allocation strategy to adapt to the dynamic service requirements and prioritize resource access for the service information with high priority to guarantee its real-time performance. In this paper, a novel dynamic time division multiple access (TDMA) scheduling strategy is proposed for MANETs. Firstly, a service priority-based dynamic TDMA scheduling (SP-DS) algorithm is presented, which introduces the service priority as a reference factor for slot allocation and fully considers the transmission throughput and end-to-end delay performance. Moreover, for improving the slot use of the whole system, a modified distributed color constraint heuristic (MD-CCH) scheme is presented to optimize the frame structure. The SP-DS and MD-CCH algorithms are combined to form the novel strategy.
