The growth eventually extended through both nares after 5 mo. B. maculata is a species of piscivorous fish that relies on visual acuity when hunting prey. Daporinad in vivo The rapidly-growing bilateral tumor would have impeded vision if left untreated. The fish was managed for over 10 mo using only surgical debulking, topical liquid nitrogen, and occasional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications as needed to reduce tumor size and restore sight. Diagnosis proved challenging due to superimposed inflammation, neoplasm cellular inconsistencies, and a lack of proven immunohistochemical stains or other diagnostic stains. Using tumor location and appearance, histopathology, advanced imaging, electron microscopy, special staining, and immunohistochemistry, the ultimate diagnosis confirmed olfactory neuroblastoma, or esthesioneuroblastoma. Although long-term prognosis is poor, hunting strategy of the affected species may dictate quality of life, as appetite, body condition, and behavior remained largely unchanged in this animal until time of euthanasia.Pulmonary function testing was performed in 3 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus (1 female and 2 males) under managed care during a 2 yr period to assess whether these data provide diagnostic information about respiratory health. Pulmonary radiographs and standard clinical testing were used to evaluate the pulmonary health of each dolphin. The female dolphin (F1) had evidence of chronic pulmonary fibrosis, and 1 male (M2) developed pneumonia during the study. Pulmonary function data were collected from maximal respiratory efforts in water and from spontaneous breaths while beached. From these data, the flow-volume relationship, the flow measured between 25 and 75% of the expired vital capacity (mid forced expiratory flow, FEF25%-75%), and the percent of the vital capacity (VC) at the peak expiratory flow (%VCPEF), were evaluated and compared with the diagnostic assessment. For maximal respiratory manoeuvres in water, there were no differences in FEF25%-75% or %VCPEF, and the flow-volume relationship showed a consistent pattern for F1. Additionally, FEF25%-75% and %VCPEF decreased by 27 and 52%, respectively, and the flow-volume relationship showed clear flow limitations with emerging disease in M2. While spontaneously breathing on land, M2 also showed a 49% decrease in %VCPEF and changes in the flow-volume relationship, indicating flow limitations following the development of pneumonia. Based on these preliminary results, we suggest that pulmonary function testing should be given more attention as a non-invasive and possibly adjunctive diagnostic tool to evaluate lung health of dolphins under managed care and in the wild.OBJECTIVES The aim of this review is to explore the impact of educational interventions on clinicians' knowledge of radiation protection. KEY FINDINGS Following a comprehensive search of MEDLINE and EMBASE from 2000 to 2018, 1795 studies were identified, eight of which met the criteria for this review. All eight studies utilised pretest-posttest designs and involved the education of medical students or doctors. All studies reported an increase in participants' knowledge of radiation protection, five of which were statistically significant. In two studies, over half of participants stated that education received would impact on their future imaging requesting practice. CONCLUSION Whilst a range of educational interventions have been shown to improve knowledge of radiation protection, there was wide variation in the study settings and type of educational programmes delivered. No studies assessed long-term knowledge retention or the impact on clinical practice. Therefore, robust research is needed to accurately measure the impact of educational programmes on knowledge of radiation protection in the UK and the implications this may have on referral practices. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This review revealed that educational interventions are effective in increasing participants' knowledge levels of radiation protection. It is necessary to assess and ensure that this improvement in knowledge actually translates into an impact on referral practice/behaviour. The ideal outcome being that fewer unnecessary examinations are requested and our patients are protected from a needless increased radiation burden. INTRODUCTION This study investigated the scope of practice of CT head reporting radiographers in the UK, and to compare adherence to professional body standards. METHODS An online questionnaire was utilized applying both multiple-choice and response (closed questions), and qualitative open question free-text responses. The 30 questions covered four key areas of demographics, the scope of practice, referrals, and ongoing competence, as described in professional body national guidance standards. The questionnaire was disseminated (convenience sampling) via Twitter and email to the National CT Head Reporting Special Interest Group. Responses were transcribed and coded; the results applied descriptive statistics to summarise observations of the study sample. RESULTS The sample of participant response data analysed was n = 54. Most respondents were from England, with a postgraduate certificate award in clinical reporting, and a mean length of 8.3 years of reporting experience. The accepted referral pathway included a wide range of medical and surgical specialities, including both in and outpatients and acute and chronic pathways. Furthermore, 96.2% of the sample had a scope of practice that authorised referral recommendations to a broad and inclusive group of medical and surgical teams, and if required further or repeat diagnostic imaging. To maintain quality and evidence of ongoing competency, all radiographers were involved in audit cycles. CONCLUSION The data collected confirmed the reporting practice within this sample group aligns to national recommended guidance. The data provided key information on the range and variation of individuals scope of practice within age restrictions of patients, examination types, referral teams, and ongoing competency practices. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This paper details the scope of practice of CT head reporting by radiographers and the contribution made to the healthcare sector.
