Ketamine, an N-methyl D-aspartic acid receptor antagonist drug, is reported to produce memory disruptions. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of ethyl pyruvate (EP), a pyruvic acid derivative, and risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic drug, against ketamine-induced cognitive disturbances.

A passive-avoidance test, a novel object recognition test, and a modified elevated plus maze test were used to assess memory functions. Hippocampal malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured to determine the oxidation levels.

Ketamine applications produced memory deficits in all tests and insignificantly increased MDA levels, which were alleviated by risperidone, EP, and combination treatments.

Increased oxidative stress and neurotransmission imbalance can be responsible for ketamine-induced memory disruptions. With its antioxidant effects, EP may be helpful to reduce cognitive impairments related to schizophrenia either alone or in combination with antipsychotics.

This study aimed at evaluating physicians' attitudes towards the rational use of drugs (RUD) at a training and research hospital.

This cross-sectional study was conducted in a training and research hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health between December 2014 and April 2015. All 424 active-duty physicians were asked to participate in the survey study. Of these physicians, 193 (45.5%) volunteered to respond to a 64-item survey. A total of 193 (45.5%) physicians volunteered to participate in the study. The chi-squared test, ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used for the evaluation of the study data.

Of the physicians who participated in the study, 58.0% were male. Prescriptions were dispensed for 52.73% (± 27.44) of the patients, with a mean of 2.67±0.98 items per prescription. The rational use of drugs was defined as prescribing an effective drug for the patient (85.4%), prescribing an appropriate drug for the patient (84.9%), and prescribing a safe drug for the patient (77.2%). Compared to residents, the prescription preferences of specialists were affected 2-fold by follow-up visit (p=0.010, β 0.694, CI 1.180 3.396), 1-fold by patient examination percentage (p=0.002, β 0.022, CI 1.008 1.037), and 3.5-fold by prescribing iron supplements (p=0.001, β 1.274, CI 1.644 7.774) (R2 0.259, p=0.001).

The results of the study showed that tertiary hospital specialists and residents have similar attitudes towards patients, their prescribing preferences and RUD knowledge level. This study provides comprehensive information on physicians' attitudes towards RUD.

Eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC) is a malignant adnexal tumor accounting for about 0.005% of skin tumors. The standard treatment of EPC is the complete surgical excision of the primary lesion and of the clinically involved lymph nodes. There is limited evidence regarding the role of radiotherapy (RT) in managing EPC after surgery. Therefore, the aim of this multidisciplinary systematic review is to analyze the available evidence about postoperative RT in the curative treatment of EPC.

A systematic search strategy was launched trough the main scientific databases including PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane. An additional manual search and a chain citation were performed about potentially relevant papers. The key words used for the search included "eccrine porocarcinoma", "porocarcinoma", "radiotherapy", "radiation therapy", "adjuvant radiotherapy" and "postoperative radiotherapy".

A total of 104 publications were identified and 14 papers were included in the final analysis. The only articles found on adjuvant RT in EPC were case reports published between 1996 and 2019. There was a slight female prevalence (57% female/43% male) with a mean age of 65 years (range 37-85). Head-and-neck region was the most frequently involved anatomical site followed by legs.

Adjuvant radiotherapy after surgical removal of EPC could be considered in cases with positive or close margins and in cases with unfavorable histological features. In view of limited literature data and the rarity of EPC the best treatment sequence should always be discussed within the frame of a multidisciplinary setting.

Metastatic lung cancer often spreads to the musculoskeletal structures and spinal column. Patients suffering from spinal metastasis due to lung cancer present poorer prognostic outcomes in terms of overall survival compared to spinal metastases from other origins. To date, no meta-analysis has attempted to evaluate the prognostic impact of various predictive factors that may influence the overall survival of patients with spinal metastasis due to metastatic lung cancer. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of different predictive factors that might influence the overall survival of patients with spinal metastasis due to metastatic lung cancer.

Five electronic databases (Web of Science, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and MEDLINE) were screened for eligible studies according to PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic impact of aging, pre-ambulatory status, radiotherapy, adenocarcinoma, performance status, visceral metastasis, and number of affected vertebrae on the overall survival of patients with spinal metastasis due to lung cancer.

From 963 studies, we found 13 eligible studies with data on 1144 patients. Our meta-analysis revealed that pre-treatment ambulatory status (2.08), Eastern cooperative oncology group score (1.78), and aging (1.68) had significant impacts on overall survival.

We provide preliminary evidence highlighting three factors potentially predictive of overall survival for patients suffering from spinal metastasis due to metastatic lung cancer. These findings may help clinicians stratify and manage patients more effectively.

This prospective study compared the accuracy of two different company-specific registration methods (Fiagon GmbH, Hennigsdorf, Germany) in the electromagnetic navigation of the frontal skull base. A newly developed photo registration technology (Fiagon tracey©) promises an increase in accuracy and user-friendliness, but there is no phantom-based prospective study comparing the new method with the classic approach of tactile surface registration.

A phantom skull was prepared with 27 markers in the sagittal, axial and coronary planes, and their reference coordinates were determined using a navigational CT (low dose, slice 0.6 mm). Subsequently, 20 runs of automatic photo registration and tactile surface registration were carried out, and the resulting marker coordinates were compared with the reference coordinates. The target registration error (TRE) of the 27 markers was assessed and compared between the two methods using a 2-factor ANOVA with repeated measures.

The mean TRE using surface registration waregistration procedure (1.80 mm).Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) often present other chronic comorbidities including arterial hypertension (AH), chronic kidney disease (CKD), ischemic heart disease (IHD) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The frequent association of the latter conditions is considered part of the spectrum of cardio-renal syndromes (CRS), a group of disorders of the heart and kidneys whereby acute or chronic dysfunction in one organ may induce acute or chronic dysfunction of the other. Verapamil is a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) widely used in the treatment of hypertension, chronic stable angina, secondary prevention of reinfarction, paroxysmal supra-ventricular tachycardia and for rate control in atrial fibrillation/flutter. In addition to its antihypertensive and anti-ischemic actions verapamil exerts favorable effects also on glycemic control, proteinuric diabetic nephropathy, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and sympathetic nervous system overactivity which may potentially benefit patients with DM and CRS. In this narrative review, we summarize the current evidence on the potential role of verapamil in the prevention and treatment of CRS in diabetic hypertensive patients.
Though the incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is relatively low, the disorder has a major impact on the quality of life of patients. Identifying biological markers for the disease will be useful, especially in resource-scarce areas. Our study aims to evaluate the correlation between the degree of hearing impairment and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with SSNHL.

One hundred and thirty-eight patients with SSNHL and no history of diabetes were included in this study. The intravenous HbA1c content before treatment was correlated with the pure tone audiogram (PTA) average as per the criteria for SSNHL. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/bgj398-nvp-bgj398.html Spearman correlation and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve were used to determine the HbA1c levels of the study participants. The critical value of HbA1c and its diagnostic implications for assessing the degree of hearing impairment in patients with SSNHL were noted.

There was a significant positive correlation between HbA1c and PTA in patients with SSNHL (p<0.05). In addition, the best HbA1c cutoff value for screening and referring an individual for a detailed audiometric evaluation of hearing impairment was 5.550%, as indicated by the ROC curve.

The level of HbA1c in the circulation may affect the onset, duration, and progression of SSNHL. The same parameter may be used as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator for this condition.

Although breastfeeding has been suggested as a candidate for the prevention of obesity and allergies, recent studies have reported mixed results. The aim of the study was (1) to assess breastfeeding length in obese children or children with allergic diseases compared to healthy children; (2) to evaluate the impact of the duration of breastfeeding on the incidence of obesity, allergy rhinitis and asthma.

408 children were evaluated (mean age 11.9±3.7 years; M/F 220/188) and divided into three groups (Obesity, n=103; Allergy, n=163; and Healthy, n=142). Breastfeeding history was collected during an interview. Physical examination, anthropometry, allergy (skin prick test with aeroallergens; Allergopharma) and a spirometry (Jaeger) assessment were performed in each participant.

Most of the children (75%) were breastfed with a mean duration of 7.5 months (range 0-36; SD=7.9 months). The time of breastfeeding was longer in the healthy compared to the obese and allergic groups (p=0.003) and was correlated with BMI centile in all groups of subjects (R Spearman = -0.
