The purpose of this study was to analyze the published research on health sciences carried out by researchers in Saudi Arabia in the last decade by assessing bibliometric output. Data for 2008 to 2017 was retrieved from Scopus. During this period, there was significant growth, from 1332 publications in 2008 to 5529 in 2017, with an average annual growth rate of 14.1%. King Saud University was the most productive institution. Most of the published research was done in collaboration with Egypt. The subject area of medicine was predominant with the main publication source being the Saudi Medical Journal, Life Science Journal, the Acta Zhengzhou University Oversea Version, and the Annals of Saudi Medicine, primarily in the form of original research articles. The growing trend in publications is a sign of the increasing quality of education and more research and development activities, which are made possible by a sufficient budget allocation to these activities during the last decade.BACKGROUND The prevalence of sellar masses (SMs) is reported in Europe and North America but only limited data are available from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. OBJECTIVES Assess the prevalence and characteristics of SMs in Al Ain city, United Arab Emirates. DESIGN Retrospective, descriptive multicenter study. SETTING Three endocrine centers in Al Ain. PATIENTS AND METHODS All patients diagnosed with SMs in the city of Al Ain, Emirate of Abu Dhabi, between 2011 and 2016 were evaluated. Cases were identified using ICD 9 and 10 codes and demographic and clinical data were collected. The prevalence rate was calculated for patients alive and residing in Al Ain city until 31 December 2016. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Clinical presentations and prevalence rate. SAMPLE SIZE 272. RESULTS The mean (SD) age on presentation was 40.8 (14.3) years (range 6-114 years, median 40.0). The 170 (61.8%) females and 128 (46.5%) were native citizens of the United Arab Emirates. Two hundred and forty five (90%) patients plore the reasons for the lower prevalence of SMs in our region compared with other countries. LIMITATIONS Retrospective design, relatively small sample size. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None.BACKGROUND Endoscopic transnasal surgery has gained rapid global acceptance over the last two decades. The growing literature and understanding of anterior skull base endoscopic anatomy, in addition to new dedicated endoscopic instruments and tools, have helped to expand the use of the transnasal route in skull base surgery. OBJECTIVE Report our early experience in expanded endoscopic transnasal surgery (EETS) and approach to skull base neoplasms. DESIGN Descriptive, retrospective case series. SETTING Major tertiary care center. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective case review was conducted at King Saud University Medical City between December 2014 and August 2019. Cases with skull base neoplasms that underwent EETS were included. EETS was defined as endoscopic surgical exposure that extended beyond the sellar margins (prechiasmatic sulcus superiorly, clival recess inferiorly, cavernous carotid lines laterally). Routine transsphenoidal pituitary neoplasms, neoplasms of sinonasal origin and meningoencephalocelications are outlined as well. No mortality was observed. CONCLUSIONS EETS to the skull base can be done with results comparable to traditional approaches. More work is needed to expand our experience, improve outcomes, and educate the public and medical community in our region about the usefulness of this approach. LIMITATIONS Sample size and study design. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None.BACKGROUND The relationship between breast arterial calcification (BAC) and angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) is uncertain. Some studies have shown a positive association between BAC and angiographically proven CAD, while other studies have shown no association. OBJECTIVE Examine the association between visually detected BAC on mammography and CAD found on invasive coronary angiography (ICA) in women and compare the frequency of risk factors for CAD between women with normal and abnormal ICA. DESIGN Retrospective. SETTING Single tertiary care center. PATIENTS AND METHODS A review of the radiology databases was performed for female patients who underwent both ICA and mammography within six months of each other. Cases were excluded if there was a history of CAD, such as coronary artery bypass graft or prior percutaneous coronary intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES BAC as a predictor of obstructive CAD on ICA. SAMPLE SIZE 203 Saudi women RESULTS The association between age at catheterization and ICA was statistically significant ( P=.01). There was no association between BAC and abnormal ICA ( P=.108). Women with abnormal ICA were older than women with a normal ICA ( P=.01). There was a higher frequency of CAD risk factors among the patients with abnormal ICA, except for smoking. In the multiple logistic regression model, ICA was associated with age, a family history of CAD, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. BAC-positive women were older than BAC-negative women ( P=.0001). BAC was associated with age, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease in the multiple logistic regression model. CONCLUSIONS BAC on mammography did not predict angiographically proven CAD. Vorinostat molecular weight There was a strong association between BAC and age and many other conventional CAD risk factors. Vorinostat molecular weight LIMITATIONS Relatively small sample, single-center retrospective study. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None.BACKGROUND In elderly people, obesity may induce changes in the autonomic nervous system via alteration of the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Little is known about obesity and parasympathetic reactivation following exercise testing, particularly in young people in Saudi Arabia, and its relationship with body composition parameters. OBJECTIVES Compare parasympathetic reactivation using heart rate recovery (HRR) following the exercise test between young obese and nonobese people and explore the association between body composition parameters with HRR. DESIGNS Cross-sectional study. SETTING University research lab. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-seven young male college students underwent anthropometric measurements and treadmill exercise testing, during which the heart rate was monitored via 12-lead electro-cardiography. Participants were divided into a group (n=15) with high body fat percentage (>30%), and a group (n=12) with a normal body fat percentage ( less then 30%) to compare multiple parameters including HRR, which was defined as the absolute change from heart rate (HR) peak during exercise to 1-minute post-HR peak.
