This study represents an important first step in efforts to understand the developmental contexts of children with disabilities on the African continent. Findings inform future research and potential strategies for policy and practice.
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) may be especially vulnerable to changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic given an increased likelihood of health concerns, low socioeconomic status, and difficulty accessing services.
The purpose of this study was to explore mental health problems and services in individuals with IDD during the pandemic. We explored whether number of mental health problems differed by disability, age, gender, living situation, physical health, and access to services.
An online survey about experiences during the pandemic was administered to adults with IDD and their caregivers in the United States and in Chile.
In both Chile and the United States, few people endorsed increased health problems. Half of the sample in Chile and 41 % of the sample in the United States endorsed increased mental health problems. Approximately 15 % of the sample in the US reported no longer receiving state developmental disability services.
Healthcare and disability-specific agencies should consider strategies to tailor supports to improve mental health functioning and access to community.

Moreover, ARGs are considered as emerging environmental pollutants, posing probable life-threatening complications in humans and animals. Commensal Escherichia coli (E. coli) strain can carry a large number of VAGs, which may become opportunistic pathogen. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and possible association of ARGs and VAGs in E. coli isolates from clinically healthy waterfowls in China's tropical island, Hainan. For this purpose, 311 non-repeating E. coli isolates were evaluated for phenotypic drug resistance linked with ARGs. Additionally, strains were examined for subsequent resistance and virulence genes by uniplex or multiplex PCR and sequencing. Overall, 89 types of antibiotic resistance patterns were analysed, while 25 ARGs and 23 VAGs were observed, of which qnrS (99.4%) and iucD (99.7%) were the most commonly found genes, respectively. Significant positive associations were observed among ARGs and VAGs (p1). The strongest association between resistance and virulence gene was observed for qnrS and iss (OR, 76.25; 95% CI, 4.02-1445.42). Our results propose that waterfowls serve as a reservoir of E. coli carrying multi ARGs and various ExPEC associated VAGs. Therefore, this study provides necessary information on the occurrence and possible associations of ARGs and VAGs in healthy waterfowls, which may act as a reference for the regulatory use of antibiotics to stop the direct or indirect spread of these resistant and potential virulent microbes to natural environment.Eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) is a once-daily antiseizure medication (ASM) that is approved in Europe and the USA for the treatment of focal-onset seizures. The Euro-Esli study, which included over 2000 patients, investigated the real-world effectiveness, safety and tolerability of ESL when used in everyday clinical practice in Europe. This post-hoc analysis of Euro-Esli employed univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses to investigate the relationship between demographic and baseline characteristics (including epilepsy- and treatment-related factors) and the likelihood of seizure freedom, response and retention in adult patients with focal seizures after 12 months of ESL treatment in the real-world setting. Multivariate analysis revealed that the factors associated with seizure freedom and response at 12 months (N = 1054) were generally those characterising patients who were relatively early in their disease course and/or less refractory to treatment, such as older age at onset of epilepsy, absence of seizures at baseline and lower number of concomitant ASMs at baseline. Oltipraz ic50 Although it was not possible to construct a multivariate model to predict retention on ESL treatment at 12 months, when the univariate regression model was adjusted for age and epilepsy duration, the factors found to be significantly associated with retention at 12 months (N = 1559) comprised shorter duration of epilepsy, absence of any seizures at baseline, lower baseline seizure frequency ( less then 5 vs. ≥ 5 seizures/month), lower number of previous ASMs, lower number of concomitant ASMs, and the absence of concomitant use of lamotrigine at baseline. These findings therefore identify baseline characteristics that are predictive of the effectiveness of ESL treatment in clinical practice, which may help clinicians choose appropriate ASM therapy for patients. This study determined the degradation of lindane in soil amended with biochar to evaluate the effects of biochar aging and microbial toxicity. Two biochars were prepared at 400 and 600 °C (BC400 and BC600) and subjected to acid washing to remove nutrition (WBC400 and WBC600). After 89 days of incubation under the alternate "wet-dry" conditions, scanning electron microscopy showed that acid washing rendered biochars especially susceptible to aging with structural collapse and fragmentation, with less surface covering. Aging impeded the release of toxic substances in BC400 and BC600 with reduced toxicity to degrading microorganisms. Lindane degradation was somewhat stimulated by biochar nutrition but mainly inhibited by adsorption. Acid washing facilitated the release of toxic substances and additionally reduced lindane degradation. The variations in fatty acid saturation degree (SFA/UFA) in soils confirmed the microbial toxicity of 5% WBC400 > 5% BC400 > 5% BC600 > 5% WBC600. High-throughput DNA sequencing showed that biochar delayed the formation of dominant degrading microbial communities in soil.
