Occlusion has been proposed to play a role for body posture and balance, both of which are mediated mainly by the cerebellum. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) has direct projection to the cerebellum. The experimental unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) has an impact on the motor nuclei in the brain stem via trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vme). The current aim was to explore whether UAC has an impact on Vpdm-cerebellum circuit. The inferior alveolar nerve was injected into cholera toxin B subunit (CTb), the cerebellum was injected into fluoro-gold (FG), and the Vpdm was injected into biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) to identify the activation of Vpdm-cerebellum circuit by UAC. Data indicated that there were more neuronal nuclei (NeuN)/CTb/FG triple-labelled neurons and NeuN/CTb/vesicular glutamate transporter 1(VGLUT1) triple-labelled neurons in the Vpdm, and more NeuN/BDA/ VGLUT1 triple-labelled neurons in the cerebellum of rats with UAC than in control rats. The VGLUT1 expression in the Vpdm and cerebellum in the UAC group was higher than that in control rats. These findings indicate an excitatory impact of UAC on the Vpdm-cerebellum pathway and support the role of occlusion for body posture and balance.Dental anxiety is a crucial problem for dentistry because it may represent a significant risk to oral health. Different factors, whether non-cognitive (e.g., traumatic dental events) or cognitive (e.g., the patient's subjective perceptions), may cause dental anxiety. However, previous studies have assessed these factors as independent predictors of dental anxiety, without providing any exploration of potential mediational pathways. The current study assessed the role of certain cognitive dimensions (i.e., the dentist's perceived professionalism and communicational attitudes, and the patient's perceived lack of control) as mediators between traumatic dental events and dental anxiety. The sample comprised 253 patients who had accessed a public university hospital dental surgery. The mediation analysis used a structural equation modeling. Traumatic dental events were positively associated with dental anxiety but, among the cognitive factors, only lack of control was. Furthermore, lack of control mediated the relationship between traumatic dental events and dental anxiety, although this mediation was only partial. This study sheds light on the mechanisms through which non-cognitive and cognitive factors may affect dental anxiety. The clinical implications for dental practice, in terms of improving the psychological well-being of patients, are discussed.
To understand the initial awareness of and experience with orthokeratology in a group of adult, symptomatic, soft contact lens (CL) wearers.
This was a prospective, 3-month, open-label study of symptomatic soft CL wearers who were between the ages of 18 and 45years. Baseline measurements were taken and then all subjects were treated with orthokeratology. A dry eye evaluation was completed at baseline prior to orthokeratology treatment. This same dry eye evaluation was completed 1week and 1month after orthokeratology treatment. An investigator-designed questionnaire that aimed to understand the subject's initial awareness of and experience with orthokeratology was also administered at the baseline, 1-week, 1-month and 3-month visits (perceptions, knowledge, tolerance and ability to apply and remove orthokeratology lenses).
Twenty-nine out of 40 subjects completed this study. Completed subjects (age=24.28±3.75years) had significant improvements in ocular comfort over the course of the study compared to their soft CLs. Most subjects were unfamiliar with orthokeratology before the study, were able to quickly adapt to the treatment and were likely to recommend orthokeratology to friends or children for myopia management.
This study found that few subjects knew about orthokeratology before learning about it through this investigation, suggesting that patients should be offered this treatment more regularly. This conclusion is supported by the ability of the subjects to learn and adapt to orthokeratology with ease, and their likelihood to recommend it to a friend or child.

This conclusion is supported by the ability of the subjects to learn and adapt to orthokeratology with ease, and their likelihood to recommend it to a friend or child.A review of nickel (Ni) toxicity to aquatic organisms was conducted to determine the primary water quality factors that affect Ni toxicity and to provide information for the development and testing of a biotic ligand model (BLM) for Ni. Acute and chronic data for 66 aquatic species were compiled for the present review. The present review found that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and hardness act as toxicity-modifying factors (TMFs) because they reduced Ni toxicity to fish and aquatic invertebrates, and these effects were consistent in acute and chronic exposures. The effects of pH on Ni toxicity were inconsistent, and for most organisms there was either no effect of pH or, in some cases, a reduction in toxicity at low pH. There appears to be a unique pH effect on Ceriodaphnia dubia that results in increased toxicity at pHs above 8, but otherwise the effects of TMFs were consistent enough across all organisms and endpoints that a single set of parameters in the Ni BLM worked well with all acute and chronic toxicity data for fish, amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, and aquatic plants and algae. The unique effects of pH on C. PTC596 dubia may be due to mixture toxicity involving both Ni and bicarbonate. The implications of this mixture effect on BLM modeling and a proposed set of BLM parameters for C. dubia are addressed in the review. Other than this exception, the Ni BLM with a single set of parameters could successfully predict toxicity to all acute and chronic data compiled in the present review.
