Self-reported current concerns' number and importance did not differ across age, and they did not predict self-reported attention across tasks. Our study shows that lower rates of MW in aging do not reflect lower validity of older adults' attentional appraisal or lower levels of current concerns. The health and economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic vary across space because social, economic, health and ecological factors are also spatially variable. Social vulnerability indices are attempts to create a relative ranking of vulnerability to a natural or anthropogenic hazard across space and have been widely used to quantify community vulnerability to natural disasters. Here, we develop a hierarchical socio-ecological vulnerability index that compares counties in the contiguous United States based on 18 variables grouped into four dimensions (ecological, social, health, and economic) in order to capture a range of factors that might contribute to community vulnerability to Covid-19. Variables were chosen based on a review of the emerging literature about the factors associated with poor health outcomes from Covid-19, information about the economic sectors most at risk from the pandemic and pandemic response, and existing social vulnerability indices. We find that socio-ecological vulnerability to Covid-19 and its related economic effects varies across the contiguous U.S., with especially high vulnerability in the Southeast U.S. and especially low vulnerability in the Upper Midwest, Great Plains, and Mountain West.
Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are neurotropic and known to cause central nervous system (CNS) infections. We aimed to describe the clinical and imaging features of cerebrovascular complications in patients with HSV CNS infections.
We reviewed records of patients with HSV infections by querying acyclovir use in a clinical registry of parenteral anti-infective therapy at a tertiary medical center from January 2010 until September 2018. PF-06826647 One patient who met the inclusion criteria is subsequently added. Diagnostic criteria for HSV CNS infection were intrathecal presence of viral DNA with clinical signs of CNS involvement.
Of 36 patients who met the criteria for HSV CNS infections, cerebrovascular complications occurred in 6 patients (17%). Two patients with HSV-1 encephalitis had cerebrovascular complications (1 ischemic stroke, 1 intraparenchymal hemorrhage). Four patients had HSV-2 infection without encephalitis had cerebrovascular complications (3 ischemic strokes, 1 cerebral vein thrombosis). All 3 patients with ischemic strokes without encephalitis had pattern of vasculitis on vessel imaging on MRI with segmental narrowing and vessel wall irregularities of large intracranial arteries with circumferential wall enhancement.
Cerebrovascular complications of HSV can occur with encephalitis or as isolated events with vasculitis.
Cerebrovascular complications of HSV can occur with encephalitis or as isolated events with vasculitis.Vitreous humor has become in recent years an important alternative biological fluid in forensic toxicological analysis especially for the investigation of cases where alcohol and drugs of abuse are involved but there is limited scientific information regarding the distribution of antidepressant drugs in this material. This work aimed to study the distribution of antidepressant drugs in vitreous humor and to estimate the blood/vitreous humor concentration ratios of these drugs. For this purpose, a GC/MS method for the simultaneous determination of 9 antidepressant drugs, namely amitriptyline, nortriptyline, citalopram, clomipramine, fluoxetine, maprotiline, mirtazapine, sertraline and venlafaxine, and 4 of their metabolites, namely desmethylmaprotiline, desmethylmirtazapine, desmethylsertraline, O-desmethylvenlafaxine, was developed and validated. The developed method includes solid-phase extraction followed by derivatization with Heptafluorobutyric Anhydride. For all analytes, LOD and LOQ were 1.50 and 5.00ngostmortem toxicology.Dinitrogen (N2) has been increasingly connected to suicidal deaths. The analysis of N2 in post-mortem cases still represents a major challenge in forensic toxicology and circumstantial data has so far played a major role for the determination of the cause of death. In this paper, after presenting a review of cases of N2 intoxication described in forensic literature, we report the application of two approaches in order to quantify an excess of N2 in post-mortem whole blood collected from a case of suicide by nitrogen inhalation. N2 analyses were performed by GC-MS on the suicidal case and on controls taken from 10 autopsy cases with similar PMI (5 traumatic deaths and 5 deaths by asphyxia). The percentage of N2 was estimated by building a five-point N2 peak area calibration curve (0, 15.6 %, 62.4 % 78.1 %, 100 %) and through an external QC, assessing linearity, accuracy and precision, LLOQ, specificity and stability of N2 in the sample vial. Percentage of N2 of the case was significantly higher than the post-mortem controls (p less then 0.05). The N2/O2 ratio of the case and controls was also calculated as an additional indicator, and was significantly higher in the case (p less then 0.05). The strengths and the limitation of both methods are reported in the paper. Toxicological confirmation for N2 are rarely performed when the cause of death is evident, probably due to the lack of validated methods and the complexity of the interpretation of N2 concentration in biological fluids. The presented methods can be rapidly and profitably applied with instrumentation normally available in forensic laboratories. As photoautotrophic organisms, cyanobacteria capture and store solar energy in the form of biomass. Cyanobacterial biomass has been an important component of diet and nutrition in several regions for centuries. Synthetic biology strategies are currently being applied to increase the yield and productivity of cyanobacterial biomass by optimizing solar energy utilization and CO2 fixation rates for carbon storage. Likewise, engineering cyanobacteria as cellular factories to synthesize carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, lipids and fatty acids is providing an attractive way to sustainably produce food and nutrients for human consumption. In this review, we have summarized recent progress in both aspects and prospective trends under development.
