Transplants are often suspected as the source of inoculum for major outbreaks in production fields of bacterial spot of tomato (BST) caused by Xanthomonas perforans (Xp). A combination of high plant densities with overhead irrigation, high humidity, and high temperatures are conducive to BST outbreaks during transplant production. In addition to chemical control, transplant growers use roguing to remove diseased transplants, as a primary way to manage BST during transplant production. The value of roguing is often questioned, because information about the rate of pathogen spread and the incubation period between infection and symptom development is limited. In this study, we evaluated the extent of X. perforans spread on tomato transplants relative to symptom development by using a rifampicin-resistant X. perforans strain and conducting experiments in an environmentally controlled greenhouse simulating grower practices and also at a commercial transplant facility in Florida. BST symptom development typically lagged behind X. perforans dispersal by at least 5 to 7 days depending on environmental conditions. Furthermore, X. perforans was capable of aerosolization, which resulted in long-distance dispersal of ≤2 m under highly favorable conditions. Growers should rogue diseased plants and surrounding nonsymptomatic plants by >1 and ≤3 m, depending on outbreak severity, to limit disease spread. As a result, proper disease management should reduce introduction of nonsymptomatic transplants into the field and subsequently reduce pesticide applications.Community advisory boards (CABs) have become increasingly common and important in translational research in health care including studies focusing on home and community-based services. CABs are composed of stakeholders who share interest in research projects and typically include patients/clients, practitioners, community members, policymakers, and researchers. CABs advise researchers on issues ranging from research design and recruitment to implementation and dissemination. In this article, the researchers detail their experiences with the CAB for a pragmatic clinical trail of Adult Day Services (ADS) Plus, an education and support intervention for family caregivers of older adults with dementia using adult day services. Lessons learned, guidelines, and best practices are then presented for developing and working with a CAB in healthcare research.Purpose Despite multiple health benefits, many children and teens do not achieve recommended amounts of physical activity (PA). selleck chemical Temporary changes to the built environment like Play Streets, temporarily closing streets to create safe places to play, are one solution to encourage PA in summer months. Play Streets can promote social cohesion by creating opportunities for concurrent activity, being active in the same area simultaneously. This study assesses concurrent activity at Chicago PlayStreets. Methods During summer 2018, the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) and iSOPARC mobile application were used to measure PA at PlayStreets (n = 11) organized by eight community partners. Odds ratios were used to determine odds of observing an individual as active when in the same target area as another individual, and when in the same target area as an active individual, separated by sex and age categories. Results Presence of an active individual significantly increased odds of observing an individual as active for several sex and age stratifications. Specifically, presence of active children or an active male adult significantly increased odds of observing children and teens as active. In contrast, presence of another person alone was not shown to significantly increase odds of observing an individual as active, except in two instances when stratified by sex and age. Conclusions Active male adults have a significant positive impact on activity levels at PlayStreets underlining the importance of engaged male figures. Additionally, findings suggest that active children can promote PA among other children at PlayStreets.Melphalan at a dose of 200 mg/m2 (MEL200) remains the standard high dose therapy before autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for multiple myeloma (MM). Intensifying the high dose regimen has shown promising results. We report here 7-year follow up of our novel high dose regimen of busulfan and melphalan followed by bortezomib (BuMelVel). Forty-three MM patients received BuMelVel high dose therapy with pharmacokinetic adjusted busulfan. Outcomes were compared to a matched control cohort from the CIBMTR database (n = 162) receiving MEL200. The primary endpoint was progression free survival. Five year PFS was 47% v 30% (95% CI; 32-62) in favor or the BuMelVel group (95% CI; 23-37) (p = 0.05). In multivariate analysis for PFS, BuMelVel (HR 0.65; 95% CI 0.44-0.97)(p = 0.036) was predictive. Similar to recent reports of double alkylator therapy, although depth of response was similar between the BuMelVel group and MEL200, the BUMELVEL group experienced an improved PFS.A key challenge in the 'making of the psychologist' is how to teach clinical case formulation, which goes beyond just listing the symptoms that make the 'diagnosis'. One approach which has been both effective and popular among students entails employing case studies of individuals who are celebrities with known mental health conditions and then exploring not only their presenting problems and symptoms, but also a detailed analysis of biopsychosocial predisposing concerns, precipitating events, perpetuating circumstances, and protective factors. Nine cases deemed to be particularly suitable for such psychobiographical instruction are reviewed to illustrate the learning points about case formulation. The cases were chosen because they provide a breadth of presenting symptoms and the individuals under consideration are ones who for the most part have been self-disclosing about their conditions, which makes the clinical material accessible for study; a number have been leaders in the fight against mental illness stigma.
