Metastases to the kidney are extremely rare and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is difficult to treat. In this study, we report a case of renal metastasis from ICC. A 72-year-old man who had been followed-up for chronic hepatitis C was diagnosed with ICC in the segment 8 and underwent S8 segmentectomy in 2014. During follow-up, the serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were slightly elevated, and abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a low-density mass preceded by rim enhancement in the arterial phase measuring 1.5 × 1.5 cm in the segment 6, and a hypovascular mass measuring 2.2 × 2.0 cm in the upper pole of the left kidney in 2017. He underwent partial hepatectomy and partial nephrectomy. Based on postoperative histological findings combined with immunohistochemical analysis, the tumors both in the liver and kidney were diagnosed as recurrent ICC. © The Japan Society of Clinical Oncology 2020.A 54-year-old woman finished the treatment for chronic hepatitis C and achieved sustained virological response. She was identified with some tumor lesions at her liver during follow-up observation by ultrasonography. From contrast-enhanced computed tomography, there were four tumors at sub-segment 4/5, S5, S6, and S7. These lesions are slightly enhanced on arterial phase and washed out on delayed phase. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed slight enhancement on arterial phase and defect on hepatocyte phase. Tumor markers including alpha fetoprotein, Des-Gamma-Carboxy Prothrombin, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen (CA19-9) were within normal range. The patient underwent partial hepatectomies of four tumors at S4/5, S5, S6, and S7. The patient was recovering well, so he discharged our hospital after 10 days from the operation. The histological assay of the resected specimen showed accumulation of lymphocyte with hyperplasia of lymphoid follicles accordant with tumor lesions. Immunohistochemical staining assay revealed a positive for CD3, CD20, CD10, and bcl-2. These findings eventually made a diagnosis of all four tumors as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Since previously published case reports and our case described nonspecific clinical features of this rare disease, it was difficult to get the certain diagnosis before histological confirmation and non-anatomical partial liver resection may be a good choice for both diagnosis and local therapy. © The Japan Society of Clinical Oncology 2020.A 48-year-old male was referred to our hospital for evaluation of motor speech disorders and difficulty in the movement of both the hands. The clinical diagnosis was Trousseau's syndrome due to advanced gallbladder cancer (cT3aN1M0). The patient received anticoagulation therapy and systemic chemotherapy (gemcitabine and cisplatin). The patient was admitted to our hospital for abdominal distension, fever, right upper quadrant pain, systemic edema, loss of appetite, and general malaise. The peripheral blood eosinophil count was markedly elevated to 45,900/μl (90.3%). The serum level of GM-CSF was high and there was no evidence of leukemia, allergic status and other diseases. The patient was diagnosed as paraneoplastic eosinophilia with advanced gallbladder cancer, which was suspected to produce GM-CSF. The patient received palliative support and died of disseminated intravascular coagulation 15 days after admission. Here, we report a case of pancytopenia due to massive bone marrow carcinomatosis (BMC) developed after local radiotherapy following to mastectomy. A 48-year-old woman with locally advanced breast cancer underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. During adjuvant chemotherapy, rapidly growing supraclavicular lymph node metastasis was noted, so chemotherapy was discontinued and local radiotherapy was performed. There was no myelosuppression or systemic metastases prior to radiotherapy, but 2 weeks after the completion of radiotherapy, complete blood counts showed pancytopenia, and chest CT scans revealed multiple bone metastasis. A bone marrow biopsy was performed and massive BMC was diagnosed. Despite the best supportive care, her disease progressed rapidly and she died 2 months after radiotherapy. Locally advanced breast cancer that is resistant to chemotherapy is at risk of early fatal BMC and should be carefully monitored. © The Japan Society of Clinical Oncology 2019.The influence of various physical and chemical factors on the swelling of polystyrene and PEG based resins in greener organic solvents has been systematically investigated. In general, chemical factors the nature of the functionality/linker and the degree of loading were found to have a far larger influence on the swelling of the resins than physical parameters such as bead size. The results are interpreted in terms of Hansen solubility parameters for the solvents and there is evidence that some solvents interact with the polymeric core of a resin whilst others interact with the functionality. The results are extended to a study of the changes in resin swelling observed during both deprotection and chain elongation reactions during solid phase peptide synthesis. © 2020 The Authors. In this review, we highlight several recent examples that profit from these features and employ nucleobase interactions in functional systems and materials, covering the fields of energy/electron transfer, charge transport, adaptive nanoparticles, porous materials, macromolecule self-assembly, or polymeric materials with adhesive or self-healing ability.
