Older veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience substantial physical and mental health challenges. Given the well-known and wide-reaching benefits of exercise, exploring the impact of interventions designed specifically for this population would be valuable. As such, the present study explored perspectives from older veterans with PTSD who participated in Warrior Wellness, a 12-week supervised exercise intervention designed for older veterans with PTSD. This study was aimed at evaluating 1) facilitators of engagement, 2) perceived benefits from the intervention, and 3) recommendations about possible modifications to the intervention.

Fifteen veterans (100% male, 93% African American or Black, 100% non-Hispanic or Latinx, average age = 68.7 years) who completed the Warrior Wellness exercise program.

The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, clinical presentation, cardiovascular (CV) complications, and mortality risk of myocardial injury on admission in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) inpatients with COVID-19.

A single-center, retrospective, observational study.

Patients were divided into a myocardial injury group and nonmyocardial injury group according to the on-admission levels of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I.

Demographic data, clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, treatment, and clinical outcome were evaluated, stratified by the presence of myocardial injury on admission. Compared with nonmyocardial injury patients, patients with myocardial injury were older (68.4 ± 10.1 v 62.1 ± 13.5 years; p = 0.02), had higher prevalence of underlying CV disease (34.1% v 11.1%; p = 0.02), and in-ICU CV complications (41.5% v 13.9%; p = 0.008), higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores (20.3 ± 7.3 v 14.4 ± 7.4; p = 0.001), and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores (7, interquartile range (IQR) 5-10 v 5, IQR 3-6; p < 0.001). Myocardial injury on admission increased the risk of 28-day mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 2.200; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.29 to 3.74; p = 0.004). Age ≥75 years was another risk factor for mortality (HR, 2.882; 95% CI 1.51-5.50; p = 0.002).

However, with an increase in heart failure prevalence worldwide, the gap between donor hearts and patients on the transplant waiting list keeps widening. Ex situ machine perfusion has played a key role in augmenting heart transplant activities in recent years by enabling the usage of donation after circulatory death hearts, allowing longer interval between procurement and implantation, and permitting the safe use of some extended-criteria donation after brainstem death hearts. This exciting field is at a hinge point, with 1 commercially available heart perfusion machine, which has been used in hundreds of heart transplantations, and a number of devices being tested in the pre-clinical and Phase 1 clinical trial stage. However, no consensus has been reached over the optimal preservation temperature, perfusate composition, and perfusion parameters. In addition, there is a lack of objective measurement for allograft quality and viability. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the lessons about ex situ heart perfusion as a platform to preserve, assess, and repair donor hearts, which we have learned from the pre-clinical studies and clinical applications, and explore its exciting potential of revolutionizing heart transplantation.
For unknown reasons, Hispanic patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) have more severe pulmonary disease than non-Hispanic white patients. In CF, the pulmonary pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is associated with worse outcomes. We sought to determine if Hispanic patients with CF are at an increased risk of acquiring P. aeruginosa or acquire it earlier than non-Hispanic white patients.

This is a longitudinal study comparing the timing and risk of acquisition of different forms of P. aeruginosa between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white patients aged 0-21 years old with CF in the CF Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) in 2008-2013. zeomycin The age at the initial acquisition of P. aeruginosa (initial acquisition, mucoid, chronic, multidrug-resistant) was summarized using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models.
