In this context, this study focused on the characterization of the potential pleotropic activity of two commercially available soybean (SH) and pea (PH) protein hydrolysates, respectively. Since the biological activity of a specific protein hydrolysate is strictly correlated with its chemical composition, the first aim of the study was to identify the compositions of the SH and PH peptides. Peptidomic analysis revealed that most of the identified peptides within both mixtures belong to storage proteins. Interestingly, according to the BIOPEP-UWM database, all the peptides contain more than one active motive with known inhibitory angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and dipeptidyl-dipeptidases (DPP)-IV sequences. Indeed, the results indicated that both SH and PH inhibit DPP-IV and ACE activity with a dose-response trend and IC50 values equal to 1.15 ± 0.004 and 1.33 ± 0.004 mg/mL, and 0.33 ± 0.01 and 0.61 ± 0.05 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, both hydrolysates reduced the activity of DPP-IV and ACE enzymes which are expressed on the surface of human intestinal Caco-2 cells. These findings clearly support that notion that SH and PH may represent new ingredients with anti-diabetic and hypotensive effects for the development of innovative multifunctional foods and/or nutraceuticals for the prevention of metabolic syndrome.Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage worldwide. It is rich in nutrients, and with its microbial component it could play a role in gut microbiota modulation. Conflicting data are currently available regarding the consequences of alcohol and alcohol-containing beverages on dementia and age-associated disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegeneration characterized by protein aggregation, inflammatory processes and alterations of components of the gut-brain axis. The effects of an unfiltered and unpasteurized craft beer on AD molecular hallmarks, levels of gut hormones and composition of micro/mycobiota were dissected using 3xTg-AD mice. In addition, to better assess the role of yeasts, beer was enriched with the same Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain used for brewing. The treatment with the yeast-enriched beer ameliorated cognition and favored the reduction of Aβ(1-42) and pro-inflammatory molecules, also contributing to an increase in the concentration of anti-inflammatory cytokines. A significant improvement in the richness and presence of beneficial taxa in the gut bacterial population of the 3xTg-AD animals was observed. In addition, the fungal order, Sordariomycetes, associated with gut inflammatory conditions, noticeably decreased with beer treatments. Previously, we conducted an intervention study to gain mechanistic insight into the potential chemoprotective effects of flaxseed lignan supplementation (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside; SDG) compared to a placebo in 42 men and women. Here, we expand on these analyses to further probe the impact of the microbial metabolite phenotype on host gene expression in response to lignan exposure. We defined metabolic phenotypes as high- or low-ENL excretion based on the microbial metabolism of SDG. RNA-seq was used to assess host gene expression in fecal exfoliated cells. Stratified by microbial ENL excretion, differentially expressed (DE) genes in high- and low-ENL excreter groups were compared. Linear discriminant analysis using the ENL phenotypes identified putative biomarker combinations of genes capable of discriminating the lignan treatment from the placebo. Following lignan intervention, a total of 165 DE genes in high-ENL excreters and 1450 DE genes in low-ENL excreters were detected. Functional analysis identified four common upstream regulators (master genes) CD3, IFNG, IGF1 and TNFRSF1A. Our findings suggest that the enhanced conversion of flaxseed lignan to ENL is associated with a suppressed inflammatory status.Omega-3 fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have anti-inflammatory properties and have recently been considered essential factors for maintaining muscle health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between omega-3 fatty acid intakes and sarcopenia by assessing grip strength in elderly Koreans who are at risk of sarcopenia. This study was conducted on 5529 individuals (2449 males and 3080 females) aged ≥65 years from the raw data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2019. In this study, we analyzed the association between EPA and DHA intake, calculated from a 24-h recall method data, and grip strength, a diagnostic criterion for sarcopenia. The cut-off values for low grip strength were <26 kg for males and <18 kg for females, which were set for the Asian population. The results indicated that elderly females consuming EPA and DHA below the adequate intake (AI) had significantly lower grip strength (p < 0.0001) and, had a higher percentage contribution from carbohydrates, but a significantly lower percentage contribution from protein (p < 0.0001), compared to elderly females consuming EPA and DHA at or above the AI. In addition, after adjusting for confounding factors, the odds of low grip strength were 0.777 times lower among elderly females consuming EPA and DHA at or above the AI than those consuming EPA and DHA below the AI (95% confidence interval 0.616-0.979, p = 0.0322). These results suggest that sufficient intake of EPA and DHA is pivotal to mitigate a reduction in grip strength and to improve the quality of nutrient intake among elderly females.The median overall survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer is only 2-3 years, and for patients with untreated liver metastasis, it is as short as 4-8 months. This study aimed to examine the associations between intake of energy and macronutrients and the risk of GC in a Jordanian population. A case-control study was carried out between March 2015 and August 2018 in four major hospitals, including an oncology center in Jordan. Study participants were 173 cases with incident and histologically confirmed GC and 314 frequency-matched controls. Interview-based questionnaires were used to obtain the study's information. Data on nutrient intake were collected using a validated Arabic food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated through multinomial logistic regression and adjusted for potential confounders, including age, marital status, education, body mass index (BMI), smoking, period of smoking, family history of gastric cancer, history of gastric ulcer, and physical activity. Intakes of total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, cholesterol, trans-fat, and omega-6 fatty acids were significantly associated with increased risk of GC. The ORs for the highest versus the lowest tertiles were 6.47 (95% Cl 3.29-12.77), 2.97 (95% CI 1.58-5.58), 6.84 (95% CI 3.46-13.52), 6.19 (95% CI 3.15-12.17), 3.05 (95% CI 1.58-5.88), 8.11 (95% CI 4.20-15.69), and 2.74 (95% CI 1.47-5.09), respectively. No significant association was found for energy, protein, carbohydrate, sugar, fibers, and omega-3 fatty acids. The findings of this study suggest that high intake of selected types of fats was associated with an increased risk of GC.
Baby-led weaning (BLW) is an increasingly popular way of expanding a baby's diet. It is based on the baby becoming physically ready to feed himself, effectively supplementing his diet, which until now has been based on breast milk or modified milk. The aim of the study was to assess mothers' knowledge about the use of the BLW method to expand the diet of a young child. The essence of the study assumed the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of using this method indicated by mothers.
A total of 320 mothers participated in the study. Data for the study were collected anonymously using the CAWI method. The research tool was the original questionnaire relating to the knowledge about the BLW method and the application of the BLW method in practice.
The BLW method was used by 240 (75%) women. The reasons for not using the BLW method were the child did not cooperate n = 30 (37.5%) and was not ready to use the BLW method n = 20 (25%). In total, 182 (75.8%) mothers using BLW and 63 (78.8%) mothers not using BLW started extending the diet before the child was 6 months old.
