Long-lasting confusion and memory difficulties during the postictal state remain a major unmet problem in epilepsy that lacks pathophysiological explanation and treatment. We previously identified that long-lasting periods of severe postictal hypoperfusion/hypoxia, not seizures per se, are associated with memory impairment after temporal lobe seizures. While this observation suggests a key pathophysiological role for insufficient energy delivery, it is unclear how the networks that underlie episodic memory respond to vascular constraints that ultimately give rise to amnesia. Here, we focused on cellular/network level analyses in the CA1 of hippocampus in vivo to determine if neural activity, network oscillations, synaptic transmission, and/or synaptic plasticity are impaired following kindled seizures. Importantly, the induction of severe postictal hypoperfusion/hypoxia was prevented in animals treated by a COX-2 inhibitor, which experimentally separated seizures from their vascular consequences. We observed e resilient during severe hypoxia except for long-term synaptic plasticity.Primary aldosteronism (PA) is common, but usually overlooked in the elderly, old, and very old patients in whom the already high absolute risk of cardiovascular events, particularly atrial fibrillation, can be further increased by PA. Although in the last two decades there has been an explosion of studies devoted to diagnosis, subtyping, and treatment of PA, only relatively scant investigation has addressed these topics in patients older than 65 years of age. This narrative review fills a gap of information on the challenges of diagnosing and managing the PA patients who are 65 years old and older with particular attention to the benefit/risk ratio of pursuing the diagnosis in this cohort, which is markedly expanding owing to ageing of the population worldwide.Hypertension (HTN) is an important cause of cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and incidence rate of pre-HTN, diagnosed and undiagnosed HTN, as well as its control and associated factors in adult population in southeast Iran. In a randomized household survey, 9987 participants aged 15-80 years were recruited into the study. HTN was confirmed through examination or using antihypertensive drug(s). Pre-HTN and HTN were defined as 120-139/80-89 and ≥140/90 mmHg for systolic and diastolic BP, respectively. The prevalence of pre-HTN was 28.5%. The prevalence of HTN was 19.2% (13.9% diagnosed and 5.3% undiagnosed). HTN increased with age (from 4% in 15-24 to 67.8% in 75-80 years). Men had higher pre-HTN (35.6% vs. 23.4%) and undiagnosed HTN (7.5% vs. 3.8%) than women. Of those diagnosed, 46.5% had uncontrolled BP, in which, women had better conditions than men (45.6% vs. 47.4%). Obesity, positive family history of HTN, anxiety, and low physical activity were the most significant predictors of HTN. The prevalence of pre-HTN decreased but there was no change in the prevalence of HTN during the last 5 years. The 5-year incidence rate/100 person-years of pre-HTN and HTN was 6.6 and 3.7, respectively. FDA-approved Drug Library Although there are some promising signs of reducing pre-HTN and slowing HTN rise, currently, almost one-fifth of the adult population suffers from HTN. Given the poor BP control in patients with diagnosed HTN, especially in men, alarms that more effective interventions and strategies are needed to reduce deleterious consequences of HTN.A series of La1-xCexCoO3 perovskite nanoparticles with rhombohedral phases was synthesized via sol-gel chemical process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Electron Diffraction Spectroscopy (EDS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR), Nitrogen Adsorption/desorption Isotherm, Temperature Program Reduction/Oxidation (TPR/TPO), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) techniques were utilized to examine the phase purity and chemical composition of the materials. An appropriate doping quantity of Ce ion in the LaCoO3 matrix have reduced the bond angle, thus distorting the geometrical structure and creating oxygen vacancies, which thus provides fast electron transportation. The reducibility character and surface adsorbed oxygen vacancies of the perovskites were further improved, as revealed by H2-TPR, O2-TPD and XPS studies. Furthermore, the oxidation of benzyl alcohol was investigated using the prepared perovskites to examine the effect of ceria doping on the catalytic performance of the material. The reaction was carried out with ultra-pure molecular oxygen as oxidant at atmospheric pressure in liquid medium and the kinetics of the reaction was investigated, with a focus on the conversion and selectivity towards benzaldehyde. Under optimum reaction conditions, the 5% Ce doped LaCoO3 catalyst exhibited enhanced catalytic activity (i.e., > 35%) and selectivity of > 99%, as compared to the other prepared catalysts. Remarkably, the activity of catalyst has been found to be stable after four recycles. There are concepts in science that need time to overcome initial disbelief before finally arriving at the moment when they are embraced by the research community. One of these concepts is the biological meaning of the small, spheroidal vesicles released from cells, which are described in the literature as microparticles, microvesicles, or exosomes. In the beginning, this research was difficult, as it was hard to distinguish these small vesicles from cell debris or apoptotic bodies. However, they may represent the first language of cell-cell communication, which existed before a more specific intercellular cross-talk between ligands and receptors emerged during evolution. In this review article, we will use the term "extracellular microvesicles" (ExMVs) to refer to these small spheroidal blebs of different sizes surrounded by a lipid layer of membrane. We have accepted an invitation from the Editor-in-Chief to write this review in observance of the 20th anniversary of the 2001 ASH Meeting when our team demonstrated that, by horizontal transfer of several bioactive molecules, including mRNA species and proteins, ExMVs harvested from embryonic stem cells could modify hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and expand them ex vivo. Interestingly, the result that moved ExMV research forward was published first in 2005 in Leukemia, having been previously rejected by other major scientific journals out of simple disbelief. Therefore, the best judge of a new concept is the passage of time, although the speed of its adoption is aided by perseverance and confidence in one's own data. In this perspective article, we will provide a brief update on the current status of, hopes for, and likely future of ExMV research as well as therapeutic and diagnostic applications, with a special emphasis on hematopoiesis.
