The search for new ideas often frustratingly cycles back to old ones, a phenomenon known as fixation. Recent research has shown ways to kick-start finding new uses for familiar objects, a prototypical creativity task wandering in the mind or the world or working on a messy desk. Those techniques seem to succeed by helping break fixation, but do not guide the search for new ideas. The perspective-taking or human-centric or empathic mindset championed by many in HCI and in design firms does provide a search strategy. We compared the mind-wandering mindset to a perspective-taking mindset, the latter priming thinking of ways that people in different roles (gardener, artist, etc.) might use the objects. In two studies, the Perspective-Taking mindset yielded more ideas and more original ideas than Mind-Wandering, which did not differ from a No-Mindset control. Original ideas came late, rewarding persistence. The perspective-taking mindset is productive for problem-solving, forecasting, and social interactions as well as innovation. © 2020 Cognitive Science Society, Inc.Narrative psychology emphasizes the role of culture in shaping identities. Less attention has been paid to how individuals resist culture. Specifically, two aspects have remained understudied the diverse forms of doing narrative resistance and the navigation between different types of master narratives involved in the process. The present study aimed to fill these gaps by examining the personal stories of former residents of Yamit, an Israeli region in the Sinai Peninsula that was evacuated following the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. check details Holistic narrative analysis of the personal stories revealed three strategies of resisting the episodic master narrative of Yamit established in Israeli society - explicit debate, implicit debate, and neutralization - which differ in the relative weight of my/our story and the story about us. To remain within the Israeli consensus, resistance to the episodic master narrative was intertwined with appropriation of the Zionist foundational master narrative. The study demonstrates that narrative resistance can take diverse forms and simultaneously involve compliance with and resistance to different types of master narratives. Investigating these two findings offers a nuanced understanding of counter-narratives as multifaceted, illuminating the complex relationships between personal stories and culture. © 2020 The British Psychological Society.PURPOSE Sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase (SPL) is a vitamin B6-dependent enzyme that degrades sphingosine-1-phosphate in the final step of sphingolipid degradation. In 2017, a new inherited disorder was described caused by mutations in SGPL1, which encodes SPL. This condition is referred to as sphingosine phosphate lyase insufficiency syndrome (SPLIS). Patients with SPLIS exhibit lymphopenia, nephrosis, adrenal insufficiency and/or neurological defects. No targeted therapy for SPLIS has been reported. Vitamin B6 supplementation has therapeutic activity in some genetic diseases involving B6-dependent enzymes, a finding ascribed largely to the vitamin's chaperone function. We investigated whether B6 supplementation might have activity in SPLIS patients. METHODS We retrospectively monitored responses of SPL biomarkers in patients supplemented with B6 and measured SPL activity and sphingolipids in B6-treated patient-derived fibroblasts. RESULTS In two patients, SPL biomarkers responded to B6 supplementation. SPL abundance and activity levels increased and sphingolipids decreased in response to B6. One responsive patient is homozygous for an SPL R222Q variant present in almost 30% of SPLIS patients. Molecular modeling suggests the variant distorts the dimer interface which could be overcome by cofactor supplementation. CONCLUSION We demonstrate the first potential targeted therapy for SPLIS and suggest that 30% of SPLIS patients might respond to cofactor supplementation. This article is protected by copyright. In addition, emerging evidence suggests possible fecal-oral spread of the virus. Clinical departments that perform endoscopy are faced with daunting challenges during this pandemic. To date, multiple position statements and guidelines have been issued by various professional organizations to recommend practices in endoscopic procedures. This article aims to summarize and discuss available evidence for these practices, to provide guidance for endoscopy to enhance patient safety, avoid nosocomial outbreaks, protect healthcare personnel and ensure rational use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Responses adapted to national recommendations, local infection control guidelines and tailored to the availability of medical resources are imminently needed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Condensed-phase water strongly influences the fate of indoor acids and bases and is also a medium for chemical interactions.
