Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation is a traditional way for solvents production through bioconversion by Clostridium species. It is still a challenge to obtain metabolic engineering strains with high ABE yield. Screening strains with remarkable characteristics from nature and improving ABE yield by mutation are viable approaches. Clostridium beijerinckii XH 0906, a newly isolated strain, produces butanol and isopropanol (BI) as the main end-products (9.1 g/L BI) during fermentation with glucose as the sole carbon source. The screening process for this strain was performed under aerobic conditions rather than anaerobic environment. Thus, it is a robust stain capable of oxygen-tolerant BI fermentation. Furthermore, C. beijerinckii XH 0906 fermented xylose and glucose simultaneously to produce BI. A mutant strain obtained by ultraviolet (UV) mutagenesis, C. beijerinckii XH 29, had improved BI production capacity and could produce 17.0 g/L BI and 18.4 g/L BI using glucose or corn stover hydrolysate, respectively as the carbon source. Interestingly, C. beijerinckii XH 29 also produced up to 19.3 g/L isopropanol through fermentation of a glucose-acetone mix. These results indicate that C. beijerinckii XH 29 is an excellent BI producer with great potential for industrial applications.Pollution of water bodies and sediments/soils by trace elements remains a global threat and a serious environmental hazard to biodiversity and human's health. Globalization and industrialization resulted in the increase and availability of these substances in the environment posing unpredictable adverse effects to living organisms. To determine pollution status and risk contamination by trace elements, data available in the literature of the last 40 years on trace elements occurrence in three environmental matrices (water bodies, sediments/soils, and biota) from Continental Portugal were collected (about 90 studies). Data were compared to water and sediment quality guidelines to assess potential ecological risks. Most environmentally relevant hazardous elements include Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As. Various studies found trace elements at levels higher than those considered safe by environmental guidelines. In surface waters, Al, Zn, Se, and Ag were found above aquatic life limits in about 60% of the reviewed papers, while Cu, Zn, and As exceed those values in more than 60% of mining waters. Hg and Cd in sediments from mining areas exceeded aquatic life limits and potential ecological risk showed extremely high risk for most of the elements. The data compiled in this review is very heterogenous, varying in terms of sampling schemes, trace elements analysed, and spatiotemporal settings. This heterogenicity leads to data differences that make meaningful comparisons difficult. Nevertheless, the compilation of scattered environmental spatial and temporal trace elements data, of either natural sources or human activity as well as the ultimate effect on biological systems, is of the upmost importance to broaden its knowledge, risk assessment, and implementation of mitigation measures.History records show that pandemics and threats have always given new directions to the thinking, working, and learning styles. This article attempts to thoroughly document the positive core of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) and its impact on global social psychology, ecological stability, and development. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the hypotheses and comprehend the objectives of the study. The findings of the study reveals that the path coefficients for the variables health consciousness, naturalism, financial impact and self-development, sustainability, compassion, gregariousness, sympathy, and cooperation demonstrate that the factors have a positive and significant effect on COVID-19 prevention. Moreover, the content analysis was conducted on recently published reports, blog content, newspapers, and social media. The pieces of evidence from history have been cited to justify the perspective. Furthermore, to appraise the opinions of professionals of different walks of life, an online survey was conducted, and results were discussed with expert medical professionals. Outcomes establish that the pandemics give birth to creativity, instigate innovations, prompt inventions, establish human ties, and foster altruistic elements of compassion and emotionalism.Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have received considerable attention for their toxic effects on crops and potential application in agriculture. In order to investigate the biological effects of CuO NPs on plants, we exposed cucumber (Cucumis sativus) to two sizes of CuO NPs (510 nm, μCuO and 43 nm, nCuO). Results indicated that with concentration increased, the available Cu content in soil increased significantly. The addition of CuO NPs increased Cu content and other nutrient element (e.g., K, P, Mn, and Zn) content in plants. However, diverse particle sizes had different effects. The nCuO treatment had larger translocation factor, higher nutrient element content in fruits, and lower oxidative damage than μCuO treatment. Moreover, nCuO of 100 mg/kg could stimulate cucumber growth, while μCuO had no obvious effects on growth. Conclusively, CuO NPs could be used as copper fertilizer to supply copper to cucumber. The nCuO had better effects on improving the bioavailability of Cu and nutritional value of fruits. These results can help develop strategies for safe disposal of CuO NPs as agricultural fertilizer. As a green transportation mode and carrying factors with high knowledge-intensive characteristics, high-speed rail (HSR) has contributed to the improvement of regional green innovation. However, the relationship between HSR and regional green innovation is still limited. Based on the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (B-Z) reaction model, this study establishes a three-dimensional logistic dynamic evolution model for factor flow, knowledge spillover and green innovation performance. Through linear stability analysis, the threshold conditions for the evolution of the regional green innovation system under the influence of HSR are explored, and the impact of HSR policy on the regional green innovation system under four different initial states is examined. The results reveal four major points (1) Factor flow is the order parameter and shows a significant collaborative relationship with green innovation performance. (2) The opening of HSR can effectively promote the evolution of the regional green innovation system, and the powerful stimulus of HSR contributes to shortening its evolutionary cycle. (3) The initial state of the regional green innovation system plays a crucial role in the green innovation performance. (4) In the process of collaborative evolution of regional green innovation system, factor flow and knowledge spillover serve as the premise and foundation, respectively, to jointly promote green innovation performance enhancement. Findings not only provide references for decision-makers to implement green innovation strategy and boost the green innovation performance, but also extend the theoretical system of HSR effect and collaborative evolution.Accurate estimations of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation are vital to effective MSW management systems. While various single-point estimation approaches have been developed, the non-linearity and multiple site-specific influencing factors associated with MSW management systems make it challenging to forecast MSW generation quantities precisely. To address these concerns, this study developed a two-stage modeling and scenario analysis procedure for MSW generation and taking Shanghai as a test case demonstrated its viability. In the first stage, nine influencing factors were selected, and a hybrid novel forecasting model based on a long short-term memory neural network and an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO-LSTM) was proposed for the forecasting of the MSW generation quantities, after which actual Shanghai data from 1980 to 2019 were used to test the performance. In the second stage, the future influencing variable values in different scenarios were predicted using an improved grey model, after which the predicted Shanghai MSW generation quantities from 2025 to 2035 were evaluated under various scenarios. It was found that (1) the proposed IPSO-LSTM had higher accuracy than the benchmark models; (2) the MSW generation quantities are expected to respectively increase to 9.971, 9.684, and 9.090 million tons by 2025 and 11.402, 11.285, and 10.240 by 2035 under the low, benchmark, and high scenarios; and (3) the MSW generation differences between the high and medium scenarios were decreasing.Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-7) stipulates the need for clean energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, prevention of environmental degradation, promotion of biodiversity, and ecosystem preservation. Toward achieving these goals, this study provides new evidence on the causal link between renewable energy demand, financial reforms, economic growth, foreign direct investment, and environmental quality among emerging West African economies. The study adopted the fully modified ordinary least squares, dynamic ordinary least squares, pooled mean group estimation, and Granger causality test for its analysis. It was found that renewable energy demand has been favorable to the environmental health of West African economies. Also, financial reforms made within the region contributed to increasing the ecological footprints of the region. Direct investments from foreigners showed encouraging results as they improved the quality of the environment. We also found a unidirectional causality from ecological footprints to renewable energy demand and financial reforms but a bidirectional relationship with economic growth and foreign direct investment. Moreover, it was evident that ecological footprints Granger cause financial reforms and economic growth but not vice versa. A-966492 price Policy recommendations outlined encourage governments and policymakers to embark on intensive clean energy technologies and effective green financial reforms to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals. We designed and synthesised a magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@Si-OH@CS-Glu) combining chitosan-silanol groups with glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent, which has improved physicochemical properties and can be used to remove multiple heavy metals and bacteria from polluted water. The adsorbent was characterised with SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, VSM, and zeta potential. Under optimum conditions, the adsorption efficiencies of Fe3O4@Si-OH@CS-Glu for Cr6+, As5+, Hg2+, and Se6+ were as high as 90.5%, 73.5%, 91.6%, and 100% respectively. In addition, Escherichia coli (gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) can be removed after 2-4 adsorption cycles with 2.5 mg Fe3O4@Si-OH@CS-Glu. The main adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for heavy metals and bacteria is electrostatic adsorption. Overall, the synthesised Fe3O4@Si-OH@CS-Glu adsorbent showed high removal efficiency and adsorption capacity with a stable structure and easy separation. It has promising applications for the removal of heavy metals and bacteria from water. This paper aims to determine the level of sustainability reporting (SR) among Malaysian initial public offering (IPO) companies. Due to a lack of awareness about SR and its dimensions, these aspects have not been receiving the necessary push from the public domain. This study is exploratory in nature. Secondary data were used by conducting content analysis of the annual reports of 139 sampled IPO companies listed on Bursa Malaysia from 2007 to 2017. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, with extent and quality being used as measures of SR. The results demonstrated gradual improvements of the extent and quality of SR among Malaysian IPO companies. The overall extent of SR was 20.70%, with employee disclosure scoring the highest (34.87%), followed by society disclosure (32.77%), environmental disclosure (22.48%), and finally product disclosure (9.88%). The overall quality of SR was 32.04%, with society disclosure scoring the highest (36.09%), followed by employee disclosure (34.13%), environmental disclosure (20.
