It is one of the notifiable equine diseases and is still present in Asia, South America and Africa. In India, glanders re-emerged in 2006, and thereafter, increasing numbers of cases were reported in different regions of the country. Between 2013 and 2019, 39 B. mallei were isolated from glanders-affected horses (n = 30) and mules (n = 9) from seven states of India such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. In this study, the phylogenetic relationships of these isolates were assessed by sequence analysis of 16S rDNA gene and ITS region. Purified PCR-amplified products of 16S rDNA gene and ITS region were sequenced, aligned and phylogenetic trees were constructed using MEGA 11 software. Additionally, B. mallei 16S rDNA (n = 36) and ITS (n = 18) sequences available in the GenBank were also included for analysis to determine the diversity of older B. mallei isolates with recent Indian isolates. Both the phylogeny showed that the majority of the recent isolates from India are closely related to each other, but are genetically diverse from older isolates that originated from India. Nucleotide substitutions were also observed in a single and double position in 12 recent and two old Indian isolates. The study also indicates that similar B. mallei strains were responsible for glanders outbreaks in different states (Uttar Pradesh- Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh- Haryana) and this is due to the migration of infected animals from one state to another state. This study implies that 16S rDNA and ITS region may be used for molecular characterization of B. mallei associated with glanders in resource-limited settings.
To investigate peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) changes in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).

We included 21 PSP patients (36 eyes) who underwent peripapillary optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans at 2.5 ± 1.3years of disease, without ophthalmologic co-morbidities. We compared pRNFL thicknesses in PSP eyes with age-matched 22 controls (22 eyes) using generalized estimating equation model adjusting for intra-subject inter-eye correlations, age and sex. We also analyzed the correlation between the pRNFL thickness and clinical severity using Spearman's correlation. In twelve PSP patients with 3T brain MRI volumetric scan within 1year of OCT exam, we investigated the correlation between the pRNFL thickness and brain atrophy using Pearson's correlation.

PSP patients had global pRNFL thinning compared to controls (beta = -6.436, p = 0.025). Global pRNFL thickness correlated with Hoehn & Yahr stages (r = -0.487, p = 0.025), and nasal pRNFL thinning showed a trend of correlation (uncorrected p < 0.05). Exploratory correlation analysis between global pRNFL thickness and nonmotor items in the PSP rating scale showed a trend toward association with sleep disturbances (uncorrected p = 0.008) and urinary incontinence (uncorrected p = 0.031), although not significant after Bonferroni correction (all 28 items). The patients had significant atrophy in the posterior cingulate cortex, third ventricle, pallidum, and midbrain with reduced midbrain-to-pons ratio, but no correlation was found between pRNFL thickness and brain volumes.

The pRNFL seems to be affected in PSP, which is more severe with advanced disease stages. Retinal investigation in a larger longitudinal cohort would help elucidate the pathophysiological role of retinal thinning in PSP.

Retinal investigation in a larger longitudinal cohort would help elucidate the pathophysiological role of retinal thinning in PSP.This study investigated the heavy metal and hydrocarbon pollution status of Orashi River in four communities of Imo and Anambra States of Nigeria. Water and fish (Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus) samples were collected from the river in the dry and wet seasons. Hydrocarbon and physicochemical parameters were determined in water with standard methods. Water and fish muscles were digested and analysed for metals using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results of analyses indicated hydrocarbon pollution. Hardness, alkalinity, nitrate, chloride, phosphate, and sulphate were significantly higher (p  less then  0.05) in wet season samples. Arsenic was undetected in water samples, but higher cadmium and iron concentrations were recorded in the wet season samples. Lead concentrations in the wet season were higher at some sites than the World Health Organization guideline. Arsenic was detected in Clarias at three sites in both seasons, but iron concentrations were significantly higher (p  less then  0.05) than those of other metals. Lead concentrations in Clarias gariepinus were lower than the Codex limit (0.3 mg/kg) except in the muscle samples from four sites. Arsenic was undetected in Oreochromis niloticus muscle samples but concentrations for lead (0.851 ± 0.203-8.604 ± 1.264 mg/kg (dry season) and 0.627 ± 0.035-9.364 ± 0.786 mg/kg (wet season)) exceeded the Codex limits in all samples. Health risk indices for the species indicated potential risk to the population from the consumption of Oreochromis niloticus. However, hazard index and target carcinogenic risk values indicate that people in the communities do not face significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from cadmium and lead intake by consuming the fish species.Interspecific introgression can occur between species that evolve rapidly within an adaptive radiation. Pachyptila petrels differ in bill size and are characterised by incomplete reproductive isolation, leading to interspecific gene flow. Salvin's prion (Pachyptila salvini), whose bill width is intermediate between broad-billed (P. vittata) and Antarctic (P. desolata) prions, evolved through homoploid hybrid speciation. MacGillivray's prion (P. Fedratinib macgillivrayi), known from a single population on St Paul (Indian Ocean), has a bill width intermediate between salvini and vittata and could also be the product of interspecies introgression or hybrid speciation. Recently, another prion population phenotypically similar to macgillivrayi was discovered on Gough (Atlantic Ocean), where it breeds 3 months later than vittata. The similarity in bill width between the medium-billed birds on Gough and macgillivrayi suggest that they could be closely related. In this study, we used genetic and morphological data to infer the phylogenetic position and evolutionary history of P. macgillivrayi and the Gough medium-billed prion relative other Pachyptila taxa, to determine whether species with medium bill widths evolved through common ancestry or convergence. We found that Gough medium-billed prions belong to the same evolutionary lineage as macgillivrayi, representing a new population of MacGillivray's prion that originated through a colonisation event from St Paul. We show that macgillivrayi's medium bill width evolved through divergence (genetic drift) and independently from that of salvini, which evolved through hybridisation (gene flow). This represents the independent convergence towards a similarly medium-billed phenotype. The newly discovered MacGillivray's prion population on Gough is of utmost conservation relevance, as the relict macgillivrayi population in the Indian Ocean is very small.
Olfactory adaptation is a peripheral (at the epithelium level) or a central (at the brain level) mechanism resulting from repeated or prolonged odorous exposure that can induce a perceptual decrease. The aim of this study was to assess whether a peripheral adaptation occurs when an odor is repeated ten times. Moreover, the specificity of the peripheral adaptation to the nature of the odorant was investigated.

Four odorants (eugenol, manzanate, ISO E Super and phenylethanol) were presented using precisely controlled air-dilution olfactometry. They differed in terms of their physicochemical properties. Electrophysiological recordings were made at the level of the olfactory mucosa, the so-called electro-olfactogram (EOG). Thirty-five right-handed participants were recruited.

Sixty-nine percent of the participants presented at least one EOG, whatever the odor condition. The EOG amplitude did not significantly decrease over 10 repeated exposures to any odorant. The intensity ratings tended to decrease over stimulations for manzanate, PEA, and eugenol. No correlation was found between the mean EOG amplitudes and the mean intensity ratings. However, the presence of EOG amplitude decreases over stimulations for few subjects suggests that peripheral adaptation might exist.

Overall, our results did not establish a clear peripheral adaptation measured with EOG but indicate the eventuality of such an effect.

Growth occurred at 20-45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), in the presence of 0-6% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0-1%) and at pH 6.0-9.5 (optimum, pH 7.0-7.5). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain lm94T belonged to the genus Mesorhizobium, with highest sequence similarity to Mesorhizobium wenxiniae WYCCWR 10195T (96.6%). Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 5 256 375 bp and a G + C content of 63.6 mol%. The average nucleotide identity value and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization value between strain lm94T and M. wenxiniae LMG 30254T were 75.0% and 20.0%, respectively. The major respiratory quinone was Q-10. The major fatty acids were C190 cyclo ω8c and Summed Feature 8 (C181 ω6c and/or C181 ω7c) and its polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), unidentified phospholipid (PL), phosphatidylcholine (PC), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), unidentified aminolipid (AL), unknown glycolipid (GL), unidentified aminophospholipid (APL2) and unidentified polar lipid (L1 and L2). On the basis of these data, strain lm94T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mesorhizobium, for which the name Mesorhizobium xinjiangense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is lm94T (=KCTC 72863T=CCTCC AB2019377T).
