AIM Symptomatic breast hypertrophy has a significant impact on the quality of life of women. The amount of tissue to be excised may be preoperatively estimated by an experienced surgeon. However, this remains a subjective assessment. Accurate quantification of the amount of breast tissue to be resected in the preoperative period will be a guide for both patient information and the surgeon during the operation. The aim of this study is to develop a new method based on simple measurements that can accurately estimate the resection weight in the preoperative period in a wide range of patients undergoing reduction mammoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was carried out between December 2016 and September 2018. With the determined drawing and measurement methods, a triangle was obtained by measuring the distances among the sternal notch (A) ? right nipple areola midpoint (B), sternal notch (A) -left nipple areola midpoint (C) and both inter-nipple areola (B-C). The height of this triangle (h) was found by mean 28 and 42cm. Additionally, because measurements for each breast are performed separately, breast asymmetry does not affect the results. selleck chemicals llc In conclusion, the formula we devised is simple, applicable and has a high accuracy rate.BACKGROUND/AIM Sepsis is a condition caused by infection followed by unregulated inflammatory response which may lead to organ dysfunction. The aim of this studyis to be the first in the literature has been designed to show the thiol/disulfide changes in patients with sepsis and septic shock and their correlation with acute phase reactants. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 113 patients (septic shock 53 and sepsis 60) and 60 healthy control subjects have been enrolled in this study from the period February 2018 to 2019. The patients were divided in two groups non survivors (74) and survivors (39). The investigation includes measurements of native thiol, total thiol, dynamic disulphide bond, oxidized thiol ratio, reduced thiol ratio and thiol oxidation reduction ratio, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. RESULTS The findings of this study suggest that changes in thiol levels play a role in the pathogenesis of patients with sepsis and septic shock. CONCLUSIONS Thiol/disulphide homeostasis is impaired in patients with sepsis and septic shock. Understanding the role of thiol/disulphide homeostasis in sepsis and septic shock may provide different therapuetic intervention strategies for patients.PURPOSE This study aimed to predict the surgical outcomes of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH)-related dysphagia (DISH-phagia) and to evaluate the importance of prevertebral soft tissue thickness (PVST). MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 21 surgeries (anterior osteophytectomy or anterior cervical decompression and fixation) were included in this study for DISH-phagia from 2003 to 2019. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale (DOSS) preoperatively, at 1 month postoperatively, and last follow up (mean 29.5 months). PVST was measured using lateral plain radiographs. Paired t-test and Spearman's correlation test was used to identify relationships between various PVST indices and DOSS. RESULTS Comparisons were made from 17 patients out of 21, in which the record had all of three measurements. The narrowest PVST preoperatively was 2.55±0.90 mm, with a DOSS score of 4.47±1.61, and that at 1 month after surgery was 5.02±2.33 mm, with a DOSS score of 6.12±1.32. At last follow up, PVST and DOSS values were 3.78±0.92 mm and 5.82±1.34, and three patients experienced symptom relapse. Significant relationships were found between PVST and DOSS at all time points before surgery (R=0.702, p less then 0.001), 1 month after surgery (R=0.539, p=0.012), and last follow up (R=0.566, p=0.020). CONCLUSION Surgical removal of anterior osteophytes is an effective treatment option for DISH-phagia, and PVST is a useful parameter in DISH-phagia. The goal of DISH surgery should be to remove DISH as much as possible to ensure sufficient PVST postoperatively. © Copyright Yonsei University College of Medicine 2020.PURPOSE Osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) elicits cartilage and subchondral bone defects. Growth hormone (GH) promotes chondrocyte growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of intra-articular injections of GH to treat TMJ-OA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) was used to induce OA in the TMJs of rats. After confirming the induction of OA, recombinant human GH was injected into the articular cavities of rats. Concentrations of GH and IGF-1 were measured in the blood and synovial fluid, and OA grades of cartilage and subchondral bone degradation were recorded by histological examination and micro-computed tomography. RESULTS MIA-induced OA in the rat TMJ upregulated insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) rather than GH levels. GH and IGF-1 concentrations were increased after local injection of GH, compared with controls. Locally injected GH lowered osteoarthritic scores in the cartilage and subchondral bone of the TMJ. CONCLUSION Intra-articular injection of GH improved OA scores in rat TMJs in both cartilage and subchondral bone of the condyles without affecting condylar bone growth. These results suggest that intra-articular injection of human GH could be a suitable treatment option for TMJ-OA patients in the future. © Copyright Yonsei University College of Medicine 2020.PURPOSE This study aimed to analyze radiological outcomes in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who underwent posterior correction with high-density pedicle screw-only constructs. We hypothesized that high-density pedicle screw-only constructs in AIS would provide a high correction rate and would facilitate the maintenance of the correction or obviate the loss thereof. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed radiological outcomes over a minimum follow-up period of 5 years in patients with AIS who underwent posterior correction with high-density pedicle screw-only constructs. A total of 124 consecutive patients were included. Demographic data, including age, sex, operated fusion level, numbers of screw, Lenke curve type, Risser stage, and follow-up period were retrospectively collected from electronic medical records and radiological measurements including serial follow-up. RESULTS The average number of pedicle screws was 1.96/vertebra. The average curve correction was 48.3% for the proximal thoracic (PT) curve, 83.
