The expression levels of both PGC1α and VDAC1, as well as a PGC1α downstream effector, were significantly lower in tumor tissues than in benign tissues, suggesting altered mitochondrial function in EC. However, Kaplan-Meier, log rank and Spearman's rank correlation tests revealed that their expression was not correlated with survival and clinical data. Therefore, PGC1α and VDAC1 are not of major prognostic value in EC.Cervical esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (CESCC) is rare, accounting for 5% of all esophageal carcinomas. Several diagnostic and predictive markers have been studied. However, to the best of our knowledge, no biomarker is known to determine patient management except the clinical stage. The present study aimed to evaluate whether human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its pathway-related gene mutations, known to be sensitive biomarkers of oropharyngeal carcinomas, could be used as biomarkers for the prediction of the prognosis of patients with CESCC. The present retrospective study included patients with CESCC who received chemoradiotherapy or surgery. HPV infection and the genomic status of EGFR, KRAS, BRAF, NRAS and PIK3CA of each tumor sample from patients with CESCC were analyzed by in situ hybridizations (ISH) and PCR methods, respectively. The present study included 33 patients with CESCC (male/female, 29/4; median age, 62 years; age range, 41-86 years; clinical stage I/II/III/IV, 2/6/10/15). The present study detected HPV in one patient (3.0%) by ISH and PCR. Concerning the investigation of EGFR and its pathway-related gene mutations, the present study detected 15.1% of EGFR, 6.0% of NRAS, 3.5% of BRAF, 3.0% of KRAS and 3.0% for PIK3CA mutations, with no significant relationship between any gene mutations and the clinical prognostic factors. The HPV-infected patient did not exhibit any gene mutations. The present study indicated that HPV infection, EGFR and its pathway-related gene mutations rarely exist in patients with CESCC. The relationship between these biomarkers and the prognosis in patients with CESCC is still unclear.[This corrects the article DOI 10.3892/mco.2018.1630.].The aim of the present study was to determine the factors associated with reduced clinical benefits of personalized peptide vaccination (PPV) for pancreatic cancer. Phase II PPV clinical trials comprising 309 (8 non-advanced and 301 advanced-stage) patients with pancreatic cancer were conducted. Two to four peptides were selected among a set of 31 different peptides as vaccine candidates for personalized peptide vaccination based on human leukocyte antigen types and preexisting peptide-specific IgG levels, and subcutaneously injected. The selected peptides were subcutaneously injected. Of the 309 patients, 81 failed to complete the 1st PPV cycle due to rapid disease progression, and their median overall survival [2.1 months; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.8-2.7] was significantly shorter than that of the remaining 228 patients (8.4 months; 95% CI, 8.4-9.9; P less then 0.01). 'Immune boosting' was defined when IgG levels before vaccination increased more than 2-fold after vaccination. Immune boosting was obseof personalized peptide vaccination (PPV) for pancreatic cancer. The incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has increased over the last few decades, though it remains to be a rare disease. The prognosis of DTC is excellent; its treatment includes surgery (near-/total thyroidectomy), which is usually followed by remnant thyroid bed ablation using radio-iodine, as well as a risk-stratified follow-ups, including hormone replacement. Treatment of patients who are non-responsive to radioactive iodine (RAI) remains a challenge. Targeted therapies for RAI refractory DTC act primarily through inhibition of cell proliferation, survival and angiogenesis. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have achieved prolonged responses and improved progression-free survival, thereby representing a shift in the treatment of advanced thyroid cancer. There will be number of targeted treatment options for this patient population in the near future. Evidence regarding which drug should be used first and whether there is crossover drug resistance between these drugs is still lacking. Clinicians should be able to choose precisely which patients should be treated with novel targeted therapies after taking into account the following facts i) TKIs have still not demonstrated a survival benefit. ii) The adverse effects of long-lasting treatment with TKIs could worsen quality of life, which is mostly excellent in these patients before starting treatment with these agents.Acute respiratory infections are a serious public health concern across the globe, they are, however, prominently present in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, different primary studies were conducted in regard to the link between household biomass fuel use and acute respiratory infections among under-five children. However, there is no national study on the association between household biomass fuel use and acute respiratory is infections among under-five children. Thus, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of acute respiratory infections and their predictors among under-five children in Ethiopia. The systematic review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guideline. We systematically searched the databases PubMed/Medline, Cochrane library, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched to access potentially relevant articles conducted in Ethiopia about acute respiratory infections amog during cooking and using unclean sources of energy for cooking were significantly associated with under-five acute respiratory infections. Therefore, the policies and regulations enacted should address the barriers that impede the development of clean and efficient energy sources.
Oncological safety, quality of life and cosmetic outcomes seems to be similar between breast conserving surgery (BCS) and mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR). We report our experience of IBR for consecutive mastectomies realized in a recent period of four years in order to determined immediate surgical results according to type of mastectomy and type of reconstruction, as mains objectives.
All mastectomies with IBR during years 2016-2019 were included. A retrospective analysis with prospective data collection was performed.
We analyzed 748 IBR 353 nipple-sparing mastectomies (NSM), 391 skin-sparing mastectomies (SSM) and 4 standard mastectomies, 551 with definitive implant or expanders and 196 with latissimus dorsi-flap (LDF). More NSM were performed during the 2 last years and more LDF were performed for high BMI, high breast cup-size, neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy and local recurrence. We realized 111 robotic NSM and 125 robotic LDF. Longer duration of surgery was significantly associated with the robotic procedures. The overall complications crude rate was 31.4% with 9.9% of re-operations and 5.8% of implant loss. PFK15 Grade 2-3 complications were significantly associated with smoking. Breast complications occurred in 32.9% of mastectomies with principally skin or nipple-areola-complex suffering or necrosis, hematomas and infections. A predictive score was determined to evaluate risk of complications before surgery.
Mastectomy with IBR seems to be a safe technique with an acceptable complication rate which is increased by tobacco use, high breast cup-size and IBR-type.

In the last decade's robotic gastrectomy (RG) has increasingly widespread as a valid minimally invasive option for treatment of gastric cancer. In literature, evidence of its routine use is not yet well established. The aims of this study are to report our initial experience and to present possible advantages of our hybrid operative technique for subtotal gastrectomy.
Retrospectively, we analyzed data from 41 patients (22 male and 19 female) who underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy (RALG) with D2 lymphadenectomy using the da Vinci XI robotic system. Inclusion criteria were gastric cancer in the middle or lower portion of the stomach amenable of radical subtotal gastrectomy without preoperative suspicion of positive lymph-nodes or other organs involving and distant metastasis. All the procedures were performed by attending surgeons.
The mean operative time was 270min with one case of conversion to open surgery. The mean age was 71.4 (IQR 68.2-76.8) with 43.9% of patients classified ary results demonstrated that robot-assisted laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy is safe and feasible. In particular, we found that the da Vinci platform improves surgeon abilities to perform an adequate lymphadenectomy and digestive reconstruction. Further studies are necessary to better clarify the role of this high-cost technology in minimally invasive treatment of gastric cancer.
The objectives of this study conducted in the University Hospital of North Tees, UK were to (i) Identify if the current hip arthroplasty documentation met good compliance with the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) hip arthroplasty guidance (ii) Improve current documentation with a transition from hand-written notes to an online typed personalised operative hip arthroplasty template (iii) Improve the quality of documentation and adherence to GIRFT guidance in hip arthroplasty.
We led a team of 7 doctors to review University Hospital of North Tees compliance against 24 criteria laid out by GIRFT. After examining 20 operative records retrospectively at random from a spread of orthopaedic consultants in the department, it was shown that there was poor compliance against GIRFT guidelines. We proposed a pragmatic solution of incorporating a pre-populated hip arthroplasty online template adhering to GIRFT guidance into our local 'Trackcare' system. Following that, we closed the audit loop by prospectively reviars promising in minimising medico-legal claims for surgeons and the Trust.
The damaging effects of thermal burns need to be managed holistically in order to create a suitable environment for wound healing. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the healing of thermal burns and its relationship with intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1).
Twenty patients with thermal burns were randomly divided into two groups the group to receive HBOT and the control group. Levels of the
1 mRNA gene and ICAM-1 serum along with the degree of wound epithelialization were examined before and after treatment. Laboratory and physical findings between the groups were compared.
In the HBOT group compared with the control group, thermal wound complications were significantly reduced (
=.006), while length of stay in hospital was substantially reduced (
=.001). ICAM-1 serum levels strongly correlated with
1 mRNA gene expression (
=0.909,
<.001). The expression of the
1 mRNA gene (12.32±1.31 vs. 10.79±1.38) and ICAM-1 serum level (231.
