Compared with dietary casein, dietary APP has blood glucose-lowering activity as evident in the ITT and GTT. Moreover, APP group altered the structure of fecal microbiota, and area under the curves of the ITT and GTT and the relative abundance of Blautia, which is associated with glucose metabolism, tended to be positively correlated (P = 0.08 and 0.10, respectively). This study illustrates a novel finding that APP intake could alter the composition of gut microbiota and improve insulin sensitivity. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Studies in animals and humans have shown that Alaska pollock protein (APP) intake improves insulin sensitivity, allowing the body to utilize blood glucose more effectively, thereby keeping blood sugar levels under control. Microorganisms residing in the human gut are associated with glucose metabolism. This study shows that the relative APP intake alters the composition of these gut microorganisms, more than casein intake and therefore might prevent hyperglycemia and type 2 diabetes.Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is one of the major complications of the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by chronic inflammation, which disturbs the quality of life of the affected individuals. Genetic predisposition, immune, inflammatory, and enzyme-mediated signaling cascades are the primary mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Currently, the treatment strategy involves the maintenance of remission and induction of inflammation by anti-inflammatory agents and immune suppressants. Polyphenol-containing diets, including fruits and vegetables of regular use, possess anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant potential through the inhibition of major contributing pathways to IBD. This review discusses the role of these dietary polyphenols in downregulating the major signaling cascades in IBD. Our review encourages the development of nutritional strategies to improve the efficiency of current therapies for IBD and reduce the risks of side effects associated with conventional therapy. click here PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS At present, almost every third person in society is under stress and having chronic disorders like diabetes, arthritis, allergy, cardiovascular disease, IBD, etc. This insists on the direct/indirect role of changes in the lifestyle for such deterioration in society. This review would emphasize the medicinal value of polyphenols present in fruits and vegetables for chronic inflammatory disorders. This concept portrays the food components which have the potential to promote health, improve general well-being, and reduce the risk of IBD. We propose to add fruits with bioactive polyphenols in the regular diet to help in preventing the immune-mediated intestinal chronic inflammatory syndrome and reduce the risks of colorectal cancer development.Hormesis refers to a nonmonotonic (biphasic) dose-response relationship in toxicology, environmental science, and related fields. In the presence of hormesis, a low dose of a toxic agent may have a lower risk than the risk at the control dose, and the risk may increase at high doses. When the sample size is small due to practical, logistic, and ethical considerations, a parametric model may provide an efficient approach to hypothesis testing at the cost of adopting a strong assumption, which is not guaranteed to be true. In this article, we first consider alternative parameterizations based on the traditional three-parameter logistic regression. The new parameterizations attempt to provide robustness to model misspecification by allowing an unspecified dose-response relationship between the control dose and the first nonzero experimental dose. We then consider experimental designs including the uniform design (the same sample size per dose group) and the c -optimal design (minimizing the standard error of an estimator for a parameter of interest). Our simulation studies showed that (1) the c -optimal design under the traditional three-parameter logistic regression does not help reducing an inflated Type I error rate due to model misspecification, (2) it is helpful under the new parameterization with three parameters (Type I error rate is close to a fixed significance level), and (3) the new parameterization with four parameters and the c -optimal design does not reduce statistical power much while preserving the Type I error rate at a fixed significance level. In this work, a new type of tomato puree was obtained from the whole fruit including seeds and skins without any waste. Currently, the food industry aims to develop products that both bring benefits to consumer health and are ecosustainable. Several efforts in fact have been carried out to revalue tomato by-products, such as seeds and skins, for human use. The physicochemical properties of the whole tomato puree immediately after production and after 6 months of storage were investigated and compared to the properties of a traditional tomato puree. Two tomato varieties were used in this study Villa Literno and Piccadilly. pH, dry weight, water activity, titratable acidity, reducing sugars, soluble solid, lycopene, polyphenol, and volatile organic compound contents were evaluated. Tomato puree obtained from whole fruits mainly showed higher lycopene (90 to 150 mg/kg), flavonoid (39 to 41 mg/kg), and aldehyde (in particular hexanal) contents and a greater stability over time compared to those of the traditional puree. The proposed process allowed to obtain a tomato puree with a higher content of bioactive compounds, producing no waste. PRACTICAL APPLICATION In this study, we proposed a new type of tomato puree made from the whole fruit. The whole tomato puree is richer in phenolic compounds and volatile organic compounds than the traditional puree that is made by removing skins and seeds. It can be an interesting product for the food industries because it is a source of bioactive compounds and reduces to zero the amount of waste.
Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) has been shown to decrease or prevent neuropathic pain, including phantom and residual limb pain, after extremity amputation. Currently, a paucity of data and lack of anatomical description exists regarding TMR in the setting of hemipelvectomy and/or hip disarticulations. We elaborate on the technique of TMR, illustrated through cadaveric and clinical correlates.
Cadaveric dissections of multiple transpelvic exposures were performed. The major mixed motor and sensory nerve branches were identified, dissected, and tagged. Amputated peripheral nerves were transferred to identified, labeled target motor nerves via direct end-to-end nerve coaptations per traditional TMR technique. A retrospective review was completed by our multi-institutional teams to include examples of clinical correlates for TMR performed in the setting of hemipelvectomies and hip disarticulations.
A total of 12 TMR hemipelvectomy/hip disarticulation cases were performed over a 2 to 3-year period (2018-2020).
