With the increasing availability of high-performance medical imaging for the management of patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), a progressive growth of asymptomatic and incidentally detected cardiac metastases (CMs) has been observed in the recent years. In clinical practice, CMs of NENs are often incidentally detected by whole-body 68Ga-labeled somatostatin analogs or 18F-fluorodihydroxyphenylalanine positron emission tomography/computed tomography, and afterwards accurately characterized by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and/or gated cardiac computed tomography when CMR is contraindicated or not available. The interpreting physician should familiarize with the main imaging features of CM, a finding that may be encountered in NETs patients more than previously thought. Herein, we present a case series of four patients with CMs from small-intestine NETs highlighting strengths and weaknesses of a multimodality imaging approach in clinical practice.Chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter-transcription factor II (COUP-TFII) is an orphan nuclear hormone receptor of unknown ligands. This molecule has two interesting features (1) it is a developmental gene, and (2) it is a potential hormone receptor. see more Here, we describe the possible roles of COUP-TFII in the organogenesis of the kidneys and protection from adult renal diseases, primarily in mouse models. COUP-TFII is highly expressed in embryos, including primordial kidneys, and is essential for the formation of metanephric mesenchyme and the survival of renal precursor cells. Although the expression levels of COUP-TFII are low and its functions are unknown in healthy adults, it serves as a reno-protectant molecule against acute kidney injury. These are good examples of how developmental genes exhibit novel functions in the etiology of adult diseases. We also discuss the ongoing research on the roles of COUP-TFII in podocyte development and diabetic kidney disease. In addition, the identification of potential ligands suggests that COUP-TFII might be a novel therapeutic target for renal diseases in the future.Paclitaxel and trastuzumab have been associated with adverse effects including chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) or ocular complications. In vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) of the cornea could be suitable for assessing side effects since the cornea is susceptible to, i.e., neurotoxic stimuli. The study represents a one-year follow-up of a breast cancer patient including large-area in vivo CLSM of the subbasal nerve plexus (SNP), nerve function testing, and questionnaires during paclitaxel and trastuzumab therapy. Six monitoring sessions (one baseline, four during, and one after therapy) over 58 weeks were carried out. Large-area mosaics of the SNP were generated, and identical regions within all sessions were assigned. While corneal nerve morphology did not cause alterations, the number of dendritic cells (DCs) showed dynamic changes with a local burst at 11 weeks after baseline. Simultaneously, paclitaxel treatment was terminated due to side effects, which, together with DCs, returned to normal levels as the therapy progressed. Longitudinal in vivo CLSM of the SNP could complement routine examinations and be helpful to generate a comprehensive clinical picture. The applied techniques, with corneal structures acting as biomarkers could represent a diagnostic tool for the objective assessment of the severity of adverse events and the outcome.(Purpose) Previous studies have pointed out the significance of IgG Fc binding protein (FCGBP) in carcinogenesis, cancer progression, and tumor immunity in certain malignancies. However, its prognostic values, molecular interaction, and immune characteristics in the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) remained unclear. (Methods) To evaluate the potential role of the FCGBP gene, we used GEPIA2 and UALCAN platforms to explore the differential levels, survivals, and genetic alteration through cBioPortal (based on The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset). STRING, GeneMania, and TIMER2.0 identified the interacting networks. LinkedOmics performed Gene enrichment analysis, and TISIDB and TIMER2.0 evaluated the role of FCGBP in the tumor microenvironment. (Results) The expression level of FCGBP is lower in cancer tissues. A high FCGBP level is significantly associated with better overall- and disease-specific-survivals, regardless of human papillomavirus infection. Low FCGBP levels correlated to a higher tumor protein p53 (TP53) mutation rate (p = 0.018). FCGBP alteration significantly co-occurred with that of TP53 (q = 0.037). Interacting networks revealed a significant association between FGFBP and trefoil factor 3 (TFF3), a novel prognostic marker in various cancers, at transcriptional and translational levels. Enrichment analyses identified that the top gene sets predominantly related to immune and inflammatory responses. Further investigation found that the FCGBP mRNA level positively correlated to the infiltration rates of B cells, Th17/CD8+ T lymphocytes, T helper follicular cells, mast cells, and expression levels of various immune molecules and immune checkpoints in HNSC. (Conclusions) We found that the FCGBP mRNA level negatively correlated to TP53 mutation status while positively correlated to the TFF3 level. Additionally, FCGBP may regulate the tumor microenvironment. These findings support the FCGBP as a potential biomarker to estimate HNSC prognoses.Introduction In biobanks, participants' biological samples are stored for future research. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) involves the analysis of data and the prediction of any pathological outcomes. In AI, models are used to diagnose diseases as well as classify and predict disease risks. Our research analyzed AI's role in the development of biobanks in the healthcare industry, systematically. Methods The literature search was conducted using three digital reference databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL, and WoS. Guidelines for preferred reporting elements for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA)-2020 in conducting the systematic review were followed. The search terms included "biobanks", "AI", "machine learning", and "deep learning", as well as combinations such as "biobanks with AI", "deep learning in the biobanking field", and "recent advances in biobanking". Only English-language papers were included in the study, and to assess the quality of selected works, the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) was used. The good quality range (NOS ≥ 7) is only considered for further review. Results A literature analysis of the above entries resulted in 239 studies. Based on their relevance to the study's goal, research characteristics, and NOS criteria, we included 18 articles for reviewing. In the last decade, biobanks and artificial intelligence have had a relatively large impact on the medical system. Interestingly, UK biobanks account for the highest percentage of high-quality works, followed by Qatar, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, and Denmark. Conclusions Translational bioinformatics probably represent a future leader in precision medicine. AI and machine learning applications to biobanking research may contribute to the development of biobanks for the utility of health services and citizens. The Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection often associates medical and mental health conditions which lead to increased levels of distress. Our study aimed at assessing the level of perceived stress on a sample of 90 HCV infected patients treated with Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAA) agents for 12 weeks, and its possible correlations with clinical and evolutionary elements. The evaluation was conducted in three phases before administration of the DAAs (BSL), at the End of the Treatment (EOT), and 24 weeks after the BSL (Sustained Viral Response-SVR). The perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The efficiency of the DAA treatment reduced the levels of stress (98.99% moderate and high stress at BSL to 70.00% at SVR). It was observed, for the entire study period (BSL to SVR), that the decrease in the perceived stress severity was significantly associated with demographic items such as gender (p < 0.01), urban environment (p < 0.001), the age of the subjects (p < 0.05), and clinical data such as F4 degree of fibrosis (p = 0.001) and overweight or obesity class II (p < 0.01). The perceived stress is directly associated with the severity of the HCV infection, and it could be significantly lowered by an efficient therapeutic approach, as DAAs are nowadays.Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a frequent symptom in perimenopausal women. It is defined as uterine bleeding in which the duration, frequency, or amount of bleeding is considered excessive and negatively affects the woman's quality of life (QoL) and psychological well-being. In cases of structural uterine pathology, hysterectomy (usually performed via a minimally invasive approach) offers definitive symptom relief and is associated with long-lasting improvement of QoL and sexuality. However, over the past 30 years, uterus-preserving treatments have been introduced as alternatives to hysterectomy. Hysteroscopic polypectomy, myomectomy, or endometrial resection/endometrial ablation are minimally invasive techniques that can be used as an alternative to hysterectomy to treat AUB due to benign conditions. Although associated with high patient satisfaction and short-term improvement in their QoL, hysteroscopic treatments do not eliminate the risk of AUB recurrence or the need for further intervention. Therefore, considering the impact of different treatment options on QoL and sexuality during preoperative shared decision making could help identify the most appropriate and personalized treatment options for perimenopausal women suffering from AUB.Although eosinophilic inflammation is characteristic of asthma pathogenesis, neutrophilic inflammation is also marked, and eosinophils and neutrophils can coexist in some cases. Based on the proportion of sputum cell differentiation, asthma is classified into eosinophilic asthma, neutrophilic asthma, neutrophilic and eosinophilic asthma, and paucigranulocytic asthma. Classification by bronchoalveolar lavage is also performed. Eosinophilic asthma accounts for most severe asthma cases, but neutrophilic asthma or a mixture of the two types can also present a severe phenotype. Biomarkers for the diagnosis of neutrophilic asthma include sputum neutrophils, blood neutrophils, chitinase-3-like protein, and hydrogen sulfide in sputum and serum. Thymic stromal lymphoprotein (TSLP)/T-helper 17 pathways, bacterial colonization/microbiome, neutrophil extracellular traps, and activation of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 pathways are involved in the pathophysiology of neutrophilic asthma and coexistence of obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and habitual cigarette smoking have been associated with its pathogenesis. Thus, targeting neutrophilic asthma is important. Smoking cessation, neutrophil-targeting treatments, and biologics have been tested as treatments for severe asthma, but most clinical studies have not focused on neutrophilic asthma. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors, anti-TSLP antibodies, azithromycin, and anti-cholinergic agents are promising drugs for neutrophilic asthma. However, clinical research targeting neutrophilic inflammation is required to elucidate the optimal treatment.
