Jumping is a simple exercise determined by several biomechanical and physiological factors. Measures of vertical jump height are common and easy to administer tests of lower limb muscle power that are carried out with several types of equipment. This study aimed to validate and address the usefulness of the combination of smartphone and computer-based applications (Smartphone-Kinovea) against a laboratory-based Motion Capture System. One hundred and twelve healthy adults performed three maximal-effort countermovement jumps each. Both instruments measured the heights of the 336 trials concurrently while tracking the excursion of the body center of gravity. The vertical velocity at take-off vto and the impulse J were computed with jump height h measures. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) results indicated very high agreement for h and vto (0.985) and almost perfect agreement for J (0.997), and Cronbach's α=0.99. Low mean differences were observed between instruments for h -0.22 ± 1.15 cm, vto -0.01 ± 0.04 m/s, and J -0.56 ± 2.92 Ns, all p1). Bland-Altman plots showed very low mean systematic bias ± random errors (-0.22 ± 2.25 cm; -0.01 ± 0.08 m/s; -0.56 ± 5.73 Ns), without association between their magnitudes (r2=0.005, r2=0.005, r2=0.001). Finally, very high to practically perfect correlation between isntruments were observed (r = 0.985; r = 0.986; r = 0.997). Our results suggest that the Smartphone-Kinovea method is a valid and reliable, low-cost instrument to monitor changes in jump performance in a healthy, active population diverse in gender and physical condition. This study aimed (I) to compare the muscle quality index (MQI) and the isometric hip strength between younger and older women, and (II) to determine the relationship of the MQI with the sit-to-stand test (STS) and isometric hip strength in younger and older women. Twenty-eight elderly women (age= 66.2 ± 5.6 years) and twenty younger women (21.2 ± 2.2 years) participated in the study. The following dependent variables were measured MQI, STS, body composition, and the peak isometric strength of the hip (PF) which was also normalized using three different methods (PF/Body Mass, PF/Fat-Free Mass, and PF/Body Mass0,335). Older women presented a lower PF in hip flexion, extension and external rotation regardless of the method of normalization (p less then 0.001), but the PF of hip abductors and internal rotators was higher for older women (p less then 0.05). No significant differences were found in the MQI between older and younger women (p = 0.443). The MQI was negatively correlated with the time in the STS in older women (r = -0.706, p less then 0.001) and younger women (r = -0.729, p less then 0.001), while the correlations of MQI with isometric hip strength were weaker in older women (r range -0.082 - 0.556) and younger women (r range -0.020 - 0.309). MQI is a clinical and practical tool to assess the muscular power of the lower extremities.Consciousness is central to animal welfare concerns. Its assessment is most often conducted based on behavior, with a poor understanding of the correspondence between behavior and the neurobiological processes that underlie the subjective experience of consciousness. Recording of brain electrical activity using electrodes placed under the skull improves EEG recording by minimizing artifacts from muscular or cardiac activities, and it can now be combined with wireless recording in free-moving animals. This experiment investigated the correspondence between wireless 'under the skull' epidural EEG and the behavior of 18 five-week-old female piglets undergoing nitrous oxide (N2O) or carbon dioxide (CO2) gradual fill gas euthanasia at 25% replacement rate per minute of the chamber volume. Piglets exposed to CO2 had a peak in EEG total power ('Ptot') during the flailing stage, whereas piglets exposed to N2O had a higher EEG 95% spectral edge frequency ('F95') during their initial explorative behavior phase and a drop in EEG median frequency ('F50') after loss of posture. Loss of posture without righting attempt, as the last behavioral state observed during euthanasia, preceded the onset of transitional EEG on average by 0.9 and 3.1 min (for CO2 and N2O treatments, respectively), and the onset of isoelectric EEG by 4.5 and 6.2 min (for CO2 and N2O treatments, respectively). Polyethylenimine ic50 Paddling movements occurred shortly before and during transitional EEG but never during isoelectric EEG, whereas gasps persisted after the EEG had become isoelectric. The dynamics of EEG spectral changes were complex to interpret in relation to the degree of consciousness, but isoelectric EEG as an unequivocal indicator of unconsciousness appeared several minutes after loss of posture with no righting attempt. This leaves a window of uncertainty in regards to the potential for consciousness after loss of posture during gradual fill gas euthanasia in piglets.Epidemiological, clinical, and basic research over the past thirty years have described the benefits of estrogen on cognition, mood, and brain health. Less is known about tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modifier (SERM) commonly used in breast cancer which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. In this article, we review the basic pharmacology of tamoxifenas well as its effects on cognition and mood. The literature reveals an overall impairing effect of tamoxifen on cognition in breast cancer patients, hinting at central antiestrogen activity. On the other hand, tamoxifen demonstrates promising effects in psychiatric disorders, like bipolar disorder, where its therapeutic action may be independent of interaction with estrogen receptors. Understanding the neuropsychiatric properties of SERMs like tamoxifen can guide future research to ameliorate unwanted side-effects and provide novel options for difficult to treat disorders. The voltage-gated potassium channel Kv4.2 is a critical regulator of dendritic excitability in the hippocampus and is crucial for dendritic signal integration. Kv4.2 mRNA and protein expression as well as function are reduced in several genetic and pharmacologically induced rodent models of epilepsy and autism. It is not known, however, whether reduced Kv4.2 is just an epiphenomenon or a disease-contributing cause of neuronal hyperexcitability and behavioral impairments in these neurological disorders. To address this question, we used male and female mice heterozygous for a Kv.2 deletion and adult-onset manipulation of hippocampal Kv4.2 expression in male mice to assess the role of Kv4.2 in regulating neuronal network excitability, morphology and anxiety-related behaviors. We observed a reduction in dendritic spine density and reduced proportions of thin and stubby spines but no changes in anxiety, overall activity, or retention of conditioned freezing memory in Kv4.2 heterozygous mice compared with wildtype littermates.
