Adolescent girls with this diagnosis will need holistic care from their primary care provider, focusing on both their medical and psychosocial needs. Consequently, the present study suggest that hippocampus and amygdala volumes of patients with antisocial personality disorder had abnormally smaller than those of healthy control subjects, considering that these abnormalities might be associated with at least some clinical features of antisocial personality disorder. However, longitudinal studies are needed to assess causality of this relationship. BACKGROUND Monitoring healthcare workers' (HCWs) hand hygiene (HH) performance is recommended for improving compliance. Observer biases challenge data validity, thus supplemental approaches such as video observation are needed to complement monitoring. METHODS We investigate first-person view (FPV) video observation during simulated standardized patient care handling a catheter in a study with 71 HCWs. HH performance was evaluated for (1) all HH opportunities and (2) a subset of opportunities required in an ideal work sequence, hereafter core opportunities. HCWs' acceptance of FPV video observation and usability judgments were assessed. RESULTS Compliance level for core HH opportunities (M = 43.5%) was significantly higher than compliance considering all opportunities (M = 30.4%, t(70) = 8.493, P less then .001). Reducing HH opportunities to core opportunities would significantly increase compliance levels from the observed average of 30.4% to 44.9% (t(70) = 12.822, P less then .001). Overall, both usability ratings and acceptance of the body camera were promising. DISCUSSION FPV video observation in simulated standardized patient care provides new instruments to evaluate HH performance beyond mere compliance rates. Our results emphasize the role of optimizing workflow in order to improve HCW's HH compliance. CONCLUSIONS FPV video observation in a standardized patient care simulation is feasible and offers information for HH interventions that target actual deficiencies. BACKGROUND Frontline managers promote hand hygiene standards and adherence to hand hygiene protocols. Little is known about this aspect of their role. METHODS Qualitative interview study with frontline managers on 2 acute admission wards in a large National Health Service Trust in the United Kingdom. RESULTS Managers reported that hand hygiene standards and audit were modeled on World Health Organization guidelines. Hand hygiene outside the immediate patient zone was not documented but managers could identify when additional indications for hand hygiene presented. They considered that audit was worthwhile to remind staff that hand hygiene is important but did not regard audit findings as a valid indicator of practice. Managers identified differences in the working patterns of nurses and doctors that affect the number and types of hand hygiene opportunities and barriers to hand hygiene. Ward managers were accepted as the custodians of hand-hygiene standards. CONCLUSIONS Frontline managers identified many of the issues currently emerging as important in contemporary infection prevention practice and research and could apply them locally. Their views should be represented when hand hygiene guidelines are reviewed and updated. Metastasis accounts for nearly 90% of all cancer associated mortalities. A hallmark of metastasis in malignancies of epithelial origin such as in the pancreas and breast, is invasion of the basement membrane (BM). While various in vitro assays have been developed to address questions regarding the invasiveness of tumors with relation to the BM, most fail to recapitulate a physiologically accurate cell-membrane interface. Here, we introduce a new 3D in vitro assay that uses the mouse mesenteric tissue as a mimic for the epithelial BM. We describe a simple, cost-effective protocol for extraction and setup of the assay, and show that the mesentery is a physiologically accurate model of the BM in its key components-type IV collagen, laminin-1 and perlecan. Furthermore, we introduce a user-friendly quantification tool, Q-Pi, which allows the 3D reconstruction, visualization and quantification of invasion at a cellular level. Overall, we demonstrate that this invasion assay provides a physiologically accurate tool to investigate BM invasion.
