This study aimed to investigate the relationship of integron genes and class A extended-spectrum ESBLs genes in MDR E. coli strains isolated from children with diarrhea in Southwestern Iran. Totally, 321 fecal samples were collected from diarrheal children under 5 years admitted to teaching hospitals of Abadan and Khorramshahr, southwest Iran. Routine bacteriological tests were performed for the identification of E. coli isolates. Multiplex PCR was used for the presence of eae, bfp, stx1, and stx2 genes to detected EPEC strains. Serogrouping was performed for EPEC strains. The EPEC isolates' antibiotic resistance pattern was determined by the disk-diffusion technique. All EPEC isolates were screened for integron and class A β-lactamase genes. Of the 14 EPEC isolates, 12 (85.7%) were found to be ESBL-positive by double disk synergy test (DDST) and PCR. In addition, blaCTX-M and blaTEM genes were detected in 83.3% (n = 10) and 58.3% (n = 7) of EPEC isolates, respectively. None of the isolates had the blaKPC gene. On the other hand, 64.2% (n = 9) and 7.1% (n = 1) were positive only for intlI and intlII genes, respectively. The results demonstrated that EPEC is one of the major causes of childhood diarrhea in our region and that the distribution of class 1 integrons and ESBLs in EPEC strains is highly prevalent. Moreover, the results revealed that continuous monitoring of the emergence and expansion of MDR in EPEC strains is necessary.
Acute pulmonary thromboembolism is the most dangerous presentation of venous thromboembolic disease. The role of thrombolysis in massive pulmonary embolism has been studied extensively, but the same is not there for submassive pulmonary embolism. This study is aimed at evaluating the effects of thrombolysis in acute submassive pulmonary embolism. This was a prospective, case-control, observational study. Patients presenting with acute submassive pulmonary embolism were divided into thrombolysis group and control group depending on whether they received thrombolysis plus anticoagulation or anticoagulation only, respectively.

A total of 86 patients were included in the study. Forty-two patients were in the thrombolysis group, and 44 patients were in the control group. The mean ± SD age in the control and thrombolysis groups was 63.3 ± 14.7 and 56.4 ± 13.8 years, respectively. The two groups were well matched in sex distribution and associated comorbidities like COPD, active surgery, major trauma, and immobimparable mortality rates.Synthetic fungicides are eco-unfriendly to agriculture and the environment. Agricultural Jiaosu (AJ), which originates from organic wastes, has the potential to be a substitute for synthetic fungicides. In this study, the characteristics of AJ and its antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea were investigated for the first time. AJ was rich in lactic acid (4.46 g/L), acetic acid (1.52 g/L), Lactobacillus (72.45%) and Acetobacter (15.23%), which was a microbial ecosystem consisting of acid-based substances (AS) and beneficial microorganisms (BM). The results of the antifungal assays suggested that B. cinerea was effectively inhibited by AJ, with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 9.24%. AJ showed the strongest and most-lasting inhibitory effect compared to cell-free supernatant and microbial solution of AJ, indicating that AS and BM and their synergistic effect contributed to the antifungal activity of AJ. Two-step inhibition' is an antifungal mode of AJ. Firstly, AS not only inhibited the pathogen directly but also provided a dominant niche for BM of AJ. Then, BM in AJ, especially Acetobacter, proliferated and metabolized acetic acid continuously. Thus, AJ achieved high-efficiency and long-acting inhibition. AJ is a promising biological agent considering its features of an eco-friendly, low-cost and easy-to-operate biological agent in rural areas.
The fast-growing introduced mangrove Sonneratia apetala is widely used for mangrove afforestation and reforestation in China. Some studies suggested that this exotic species outperforms native species in terms of carbon sequestration potential. This study tested the hypothesis that multi-species mangrove plantations might have higher carbon sequestration potential than S. apetala monocultures.

Our field measurements at Hanjiang River Estuary (Guangdong province, China) showed that the carbon stock (46.0 ± 3.0Mg/ha) in S. apetala plantations where the native Kandelia obovata formed an understory shrub layer was slightly higher than that in S. apetala monocultures (36.6 ± 1.3Mg/ha). Moreover, the carbon stock in monospecific K. obovata stands (106.6 ± 1.4Mg/ha) was much larger than that of S. apetala monocultures.

Our results show that K. obovata monocultures may have a higher carbon accumulation rate than S. apetala monocultures. Planting K. obovata seedlings in existing S. apetala plantations may enhance the carbon sink associated with these plantations.
