The 3D printing of nasopharyngeal swabs during the COVID-19 pandemic presents a central case of how to efficiently address a break in the global supply chain of medical equipment. Herein a comprehensive study of swab design considerations for mass production by stereolithography is presented. The retention and comfort performance of a range of novel designs of 3D-printed swabs are compared with the standard flocked-head swab used in clinical environments. Sample retention of the 3D swab is governed by the volume, porosity density, and void fraction of the head as well as by the pore geometry. 3D-printed swabs outperform conventional flock-head swabs in terms of sample retention. It is argued that mechanically functional designs of the swab head, such as corkscrew-shaped heads and negative Poisson ratio heads, maximize sample retention and improve patient comfort. In addition, available designs of swab shafts for an optimized sample collection procedure are characterized. The study is conducted in vitro, using artificial mucus, covering the full range of human mucus viscosities in a 3D-printed model of a nasal cavity. The work sets the path for the resilient supply of widespread sterile testing equipment as a rapid response to the current and future pandemics.An EMS helicopter was scheduled to transport a woman with COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome. We summarize how the potential power of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) can be harnessed to help address the disease burden of NCDs at global, national, regional and local levels. RWE is essential to understand the epidemiology of NCDs, quantify NCD burdens, assist with the early detection of vulnerable populations at high risk of NCDs by identifying the most influential risk factors, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost-benefits of treatments, programs, and public policies for NCDs. To realize the potential power of RWD and RWE, challenges related to data integration, access, interoperability, standardization of analytical methods, quality control, security, privacy protection, and ethical standards for data use must be addressed. Finally, partnerships between academic centers, governments, pharmaceutical companies, and other stakeholders aimed at improving the utilization of RWE can have a substantial beneficial impact in preventing and managing NCDs.Applying silver into coatings has become a prevalent method in fabricating antimicrobial surfaces. However, the concerns about durability always exist and limit its applications. Here, a highly inhibitory, active, durable, and easy-to-use silver ions-nanosilver antimicrobial additive for powder coatings was fabricated in this study. Silver nanoparticles were chemically bonded to the Ag, Cu, and Zn-ternary ion-exchanged zeolite by α -lipoic acid, which was then encapsulated by hydrophilic polymers. The fabricated silver ions and silver nanoparticles (Ag+-AgNPs) complementary structure provides a synergistic effect. Ag+ is the main antimicrobial agent, while AgNPs act as a supplementary reservoir of Ag+. As well, the formed thin layer of silver nanoparticles and hydrophilic film prolongs the release of active Ag+ from zeolite, and Ag+ facilitates the activation of AgNPs. The results show that this additive indicates excellent antimicrobial activity to E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans, and that the coatings with the additive exhibit over 99.99% reduction rate for the tested bacteria and fungi. The coating film is able to maintain over 99% antimicrobial reduction even after 1200 repeated solution wipings, or over 30 wash cycles of artificial sweat solution, indicating high durability. Furthermore, the yellowness of the coating is not evident (Δb less then 2) despite the high loading of silver, and the silver nanoparticles have little impact on gloss, haze, and distinctness of the coating film image.In a study on the fungal diversity in Northeast China, twelve yeast isolates were obtained from soils collected in three provinces, Helongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning. Morphological assessment and phylogenetic analyses of the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domains of the nuc 28S rDNA (nuc 28S) gene of the 12 cultures placed them in the genus Mrakia, namely Mrakia aquatica, Mrakia arctica, Mrakia frigida, Mrakia gelida and Mrakia robertii. A total of three isolates represented a hitherto undescribed species, which is described here as M. panshiensissp. nov. (MB 834813). The species M. panshiensissp. nov. shares several morphological characters with M. niccombsii, M. aquatica, M. fibulata and M. hoshinonis. These species can be distinguished based on physiological traits and pairwise rDNA sequence similarities. The study also describes for the first time the formation of teliospores by previously described M. arctica.Microlicia gracilis and Microlicia xylopodifera, endemic to Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiás State, Brazil, are described, illustrated and the conservation status is also provided. Both species resemble Microlicia ordinata and Microlicia ramosa that are also endemic to Goiás, by having sessile leaf with serrate and ciliate margin, pedicellate flower, triangular and short sepal and dimorphic stamens with bicolorous and polysporangiate anthers. However, M. gracilis differs by the long internode (2-4 mm long), concolorous, semi-amplexicaul and lanceolate leaf, and petal acuminate at the apex. N6F11 solubility dmso Microlicia xylopodifera differs in having a robust xylopodium, horizontal or slightly ascending leaf and a dense crown of glandular trichomes at the apex of flower bud.
