What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?
Unlike older keys, modern car keys are equipped with specific chips in them that are unique to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and then turning on the car.
Keys can be purchased at the dealership or cloned at the locksmith's shop. The process for programing the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position without starting the engine, then removing it within a predetermined time period.
Transponder Codes
When a transponder is interrogated it sends out an encoded signal that is accompanied by an eight-digit code. The signal is referred to as the SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send a specific message to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly employed to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are very important to ensure safe flying.

VIN Numbers
VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide an abundance of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). Additionally, the tenth through seventeenth numbers could contain additional information, including options or features that are installed in the vehicle.
