The arginine-glutamic acid dipeptide repeats gene (RERE) encodes a nuclear receptor coregulator that modulates gene expression through its interaction with transcriptional machinery. In humans, RERE deficiency causes neurodevelopmental disorder with or without structural defects of the brain, eye, heart, and kidney (NEDBEH). Ophthalmological defects are seen in approximately one third of individuals with NEDBEH and in RERE-deficient mice which can serve as a useful animal model.

In mice, RERE is expressed in a subset of retinal ganglion cells (RGC), the lens epithelium, and the ciliary body during the embryonic period. RERE expression expands into the outer nuclear layer and the inner nuclear layer during the postnatal period. RERE-deficient mice have retinal and optic nerve atrophy. We show that RERE deficiency causes progressive loss of retinal cells and apoptosis of retinal cells in the ganglion cell layer as early as E17.5. The number of RGCs is also reduced in RERE-deficient embryos and mice.

We conclude that RERE is required to control the apoptosis of retinal cells in the developing retina, and that RERE deficiency results in the retina atrophy through degeneration of the retinal cells and optic nerve atrophy through the loss of RGCs.

This study analyses, whether elevated oxygen consumption in the headspace of MA-packages would enable a prediction method for meat spoilage. We monitored the growth of single spoiling species inoculated on high-oxygen MAP beef and poultry, performed sensorial analysis and determined oxygen concentrations of the headspace via a non-invasive sensor spot technology. We detected microbial headspace oxygen consumption occurring prior to perceptible meat spoilage for certain species inoculated on beef steaks. However, headspace oxygen consumption and cell counts at the onset of spoilage were highly species-dependent, which resulted in a strong (Brochothrix thermosphacta) and moderate (Leuconostoc gelidum subspecies) decrease of the headspace oxygen content. No linear decrease of the headspace oxygen could be observed for Carnobacterium divergens and Carnobacterium maltaromaticum inoculated on poultry meat. We demonstrate the applicability of an incorporated oxygen sensor spot technology in MAP meat packages for detection of spoilage in individual packages prior to its perceptible onset. This enables individual package evaluation and sorting within retail, and consequently reduces meat disposal as waste.
Specific details about cardiovascular complications, especially arrhythmias, related to the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) are not well described.

We sought to evaluate the incidence and predictive factors of cardiovascular complications and new-onset arrhythmias in Black and White hospitalized COVID-19 patients and determine the impact of new-onset arrhythmia on outcomes.

We collected and analyzed baseline demographic and clinical data from COVID-19 patients hospitalized at the Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, between March 1 and May 1, 2020.

Among 310 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the mean age was 61.4 ± 16.5 years, with 58,7% females, and 67% Black patients. Black patients were more likely to be younger, have diabetes and obesity. The incidence of cardiac complications was 20%, with 9% of patients having new-onset arrhythmia. There was no significant difference in cardiovascular outcomes between Black and White patients. A multivariate analysis determined age ≥60 years to evation in D-dimer in COVID-19 patients is a significant predictor of new onset arrhythmias. Our finding suggest continuous rhythm monitoring should be adopted in this patient population during hospitalization to better risk stratify hospitalized patients and prompt earlier intervention.
The outbreak of COVID-19 brought high mortality rate from the viral infection and caused a huge psychological stress for healthcare staff who work under great pressure during the pandemic.

The purpose of this study is to assess the level of stress-induced cognition among radiologic technologists (RTs) in COVID-19 quarantine centres in Palestine after the outbreak of COVID-19.

Stress-induced cognition was assessed using Stress-induced Cognition Scale (SCS) questionnaire. The validity and stability of the measuring tool was verified. The sample consisted of 61 RTs who are working currently at various quarantine centres in Palestine.

Cognition-induced stress was higher than average. There was a statistically significant difference between RTs working directly with COVID-19 patient compared with RTs working indirectly. Additionally, results show an increased level of stress for RTs having children compared with single or non-parent RTs. Also, RTs who dealt with COVID-19 patients for prolonged periods over a month had higher level of stress-induced cognition. Other variables did not show significant differences among RTs.

It is recommended to provide psychological support for RTs who dealt and are currently involved in COVID-19 quarantine centres to alleviate stress-induced cognition.

Although it is generally agreed upon that the use of multiple conservation practices ("stacking") will lead to greater improvements to water quality, this may not be cost effective to farmers, reducing the likelihood of adoption. At present, wholesale recommendations of conservation practices are given; however, the application of specific conservation practices in certain environments (e.g., no-till with surface application, cover crops) may not be effective and can even lead to unintended consequences. In this paper, we present the Lake Erie watershed as a case study. The Lake Erie watershed contains regions with unique physical geographies that include differences in climate, soil, topography, and land use, which have implications for both P transport from agricultural fields and the efficacy of conservation practices in mitigating P losses. We define major regions within the Lake Erie watershed where common strategies for conservation practice implementation are appropriate, and we propose a five-step plan for bringing regionally tailored, adaptive, and cost-conscious conservation practice into watershed planning. Although this paper is specific to the Lake Erie watershed, our framework can be transferred across broader geographic regions to provide guidance for watershed planning.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Although there are clear indications for revascularization in patients with acute coronary syndromes, there is debate regarding the benefits of revascularization in stable ischemic heart disease. We sought to perform a comprehensive meta-analysis to assess the role of revascularization compared to conservative medical therapy alone in patients with stable ischemic heart disease.

There is no significant difference in all-cause mortality or cardiovascular mortality between invasive and medical arms.

We performed a systematic literature search from January 2000 to June 2020. Our literature search yielded seven randomized controlled trials. We analyzed a total of 12 013 patients (6109 in revascularization arm and 5904 in conservative medical therapy arm). Primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (death, myocardial infarction [MI], or stroke), cardiovascular mortality, MI, and stroke. Additional subgroup analysis for all-cause mortality was performed comparing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with bare metal stent versus conservative therapy; and PCI with drug eluting stent versus conservative therapy.

There was no statistically significant difference in primary outcome of all-cause mortality between either arm (odds ratio [OR]=0.95; 95% CI [confidence interval], 0.83 to 1.08; p =.84). There were statistically significant lower rates of MACE (death, MI or stroke) in the revascularization arm when compared to conservative arm.

Our analysis did not show any survival advantage of an initial invasive strategy over conservative medical therapy in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD).

In this work, we report that several microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) such as vinblastine, taxol, and C12 (combretastatin-2-aminoimidazole analog) inhibit Wnt/β-catenin signaling in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We showed that the inhibition of microtubule dynamics by MTAs decreased the level of β-catenin by increasing Axin and adenomatous polyposis coli levels and reducing the level of dishevelled. Furthermore, MTAs strongly reduced the localization of β-catenin in the nucleus. The reduction in the level of nuclear β-catenin was neither due to the degradation of β-catenin in the nucleus nor due to an increase in the export of nuclear β-catenin from the nucleus. A motor protein kinesin-2 was found to assist the nuclear transportation of β-catenin. Interestingly, Wnt/β-catenin signaling antagonist treatment synergized with MTAs and the activators of Wnt/β-catenin signaling antagonized with the MTAs. C12 potently suppressed the growth of 4-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced OSCC in the tongue of C57 black 6 mice and also abrogated Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the tumor. Our results provide evidence that the decrease in Wnt/β-catenin signaling is an important antitumor effect of MTAs and the combined use of MTAs with Wnt/β-catenin signaling antagonists could be a promising strategy for cancer chemotherapy.Minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring by PCR methods is a strong and standardized predictor of clinical outcome in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL). However, about 20% of MCL and 40% of FL patients lack a reliable molecular marker, being thus not eligible for MRD studies. see more Recently, targeted locus amplification (TLA), a next-generation sequencing (NGS) method based on the physical proximity of DNA sequences for target selection, identified novel gene rearrangements in leukemia. The aim of this study was to test TLA in MCL and FL diagnostic samples lacking a classical, PCR-detectable, t(11; 14) MTC (BCL1/IGH), or t(14; 18) major breakpoint region and minor cluster region (BCL2/IGH) rearrangements. Overall, TLA was performed on 20 MCL bone marrow (BM) or peripheral blood (PB) primary samples and on 20 FL BM, identifying a novel BCL1 or BCL2/IGH breakpoint in 16 MCL and 8 FL patients (80% and 40%, respectively). These new breakpoints (named BCL1-TLA and BCL2-TLA) were validated by ASO primers design and compared as MRD markers to classical IGH rearrangements in eight MCL overall, MRD results by BCL1-TLA were superimposable (R Pearson = 0.
