3 ± 49.3, 308 ± 138.1, and 1075.6 ± 346.8 pieces/kg soil in fields with 5, 15, and 24 y of continuous mulching, respectively. Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that the composition of the microplastics matched that of the mulching films, suggesting the microplastic particles originated from the mulching films. CD38inhibitor1 These findings confirm that plastic mulching is an important source of macroplastic and microplastic contamination in terrestrial environments. Further studies to investigate the microplastic hazards in soils are thus necessary. The Mediterranean basin is a hotspot of mercury (Hg) contamination owing to intense anthropogenic emissions, volcanic activity and oligotrophic conditions. Little work has been done to assess the sources of Hg exposure for seabirds and, particularly, the physiological consequences of Hg bioaccumulation. In this study, we (i) describe the individual and temporal variation in blood concentration of total Hg (THg) over three breeding seasons, (ii) identify the factors that affect the THg exposure and (iii) determine the individual- and population-level connections between THg and blood-based markers of oxidative status in chicks of Scopoli's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) breeding on the island of Linosa in the southern Mediterranean. We carried out the work on chicks near fledging because they are fed with prey captured near the colony, thus their Hg levels reflect local contamination. The concentration of THg in erythrocytes varied from 0.23 to 4.29 μg g-1 dw. Chicks that were fed upon higher trophic level prey (i.e., higher δ15N values) had higher THg levels. Individual variation in THg concentrations was not explained by parental identity, sex nor δ13C values. There was significant variation in THg among chicks born from the same mother in different years. We found significant correlations between THg and markers of oxidative status; however, these correlations were no longer significant when we took into account the annual variation in mean values of all metrics. Males with higher values of body condition index had higher blood THg, while THg and body condition index were not correlated in females. Our data indicate that THg levels were moderate to high if compared to other seabirds. However, there is little evidence for harmful short-term detrimental effects owing to THg exposure. Northern China is a significant source of dust source in Central Asia. Thus, high-resolution analysis of dust storms and comparison of dust sources in different regions of northern China are important to clarify the formation mechanism of East Asian dust storms and predict or even prevent such storms. Here, we analyzed spatiotemporal trends in dust storms that occurred in three main dust source regions during 1960-2007 Taklimakan Desert (western region [WR]), Badain Jaran and Tengger Deserts (middle region [MR]), and Otindag Sandy Land (eastern region [ER]). We analyzed daily dust storm frequency (DSF) at the 10-day scale (first [FTDM], middle [MTDM], and last [LTDM] 10 days of a month), and investigated the association of dust storm occurrences with meteorological factors. The 10-day DSF was greatest in the FTDM (accounting for 77.14% of monthly occurrences) in the WR, MTDM (45.85%) in the MR, and LTDM (72.12%) in the ER, showing a clear trend of movement from the WR to the ER. Temporal analysis of DSF revealed trend changes over time at annual and 10-day scales, with mutation points at 1985 and 2000. We applied single-factor and multiple-factor analyses to explore the driving mechanisms of DSF at the 10-day scale. Among single factors, a low wind-speed threshold, high solar radiation, and high evaporation were correlated with a high DSF, effectively explaining the variations in DSF at the 10-day scale; however, temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation poorly explained variations in DSF. Similarly, multiple-factor analysis using a classification and regression tree revealed that maximum wind speed was a major influencing factor of dust storm occurrence at the 10-day scale, followed by relative humidity, evaporation, and solar radiation; temperature and precipitation had weak influences. These findings help clarify the mechanisms of dust storm occurrence in East Asia. Urban parks play an important role in the urban ecosystem and are also used by residents for recreation. The environmental quality of urban park soils might influence human health following long-term exposure. To assess potential sources and pollution risks of heavy metal(loid)s in the topsoil of urban parks, we subjected metal concentrations in soil samples from 121 parks in the Beijing urban area to geostatistical analyses, conditional inference tree (CIT) analyses, ecological risk and human health risk assessment. CIT effectively explained the influence of human activity on the spatial variation and accumulation of soil metal(loid)s and identified the contributions of natural and anthropogenic inputs. The main factors influencing the accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s, including urbanization duration, park age, per capita GDP, industrial output, and coal consumption, were evaluated by CIT. Except for Cr and Ni, the average concentrations of the metal(loid)s tested (Cu, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, and Cd) were higher than the background values. In the urban parks, Ni and Cr derived mostly from soil parent materials. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg were strongly associated with human influences, including industrial, agricultural, and traffic activity. After assessing health and ecological risks, we conclude that heavy metal(loid)s in the soil of Beijing urban parks pose no obvious health risk to humans, and the ecological risk is also low. Despite intensive ecotoxicological research, we still know relatively little about the ecological impacts of many environmental contaminants. Filling these knowledge gaps is particularly important regarding amphibians, because they play significant roles in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and their populations are declining worldwide. In this study, we investigated two pollutants that have been poorly studied in ecotoxicology despite their widespread occurrence in surface waters the herbicide terbuthylazine and the pharmaceutical drug carbamazepine. We exposed two anuran species throughout their larval development to each of two environmentally relevant concentrations of each pollutant, and recorded mortality and 17 sub-lethal endpoints up to several months after exposure. Mortality was low and unrelated to treatment. In agile frogs (Rana dalmatina), we found that treatment with 0.3 μg/L terbuthylazine decreased tadpole activity and reduced fat bodies in juveniles, whereas treatment with 50 μg/L carbam similar structure, because the terbuthylazine effects we found do not conform with previously reported effects of atrazine, a related and extensively studied herbicide. Association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and obesity remains inconclusive, and the evidence from rural areas was limited. Thus, this study aimed to assess the association between ambient air pollution and obesity based on different anthropometric indices in Chinese rural adults, and further to compare the effect sizes of different air pollution types. A total of 38,824 participants (aged 18-79 years) were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Logistic and multivariable linear regression model were used to examine the association between ambient air pollution exposure (including particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 1.0 μm (PM1), ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), and ≤10 μm (PM10), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) and obesity as well as obese anthropometric indices (including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage (BFP), and visceral fat index (VFI)). The potential effect modifications were also examined. Positive associations were found between long-term exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 and obesity regardless of how obesity was defined (false discovery rate (FDR) less then 0.05). Moreover, BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR, BFP, and VFI displayed increased trends with PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 concentrations increasing (all FDR less then 0.05). PM10 had the largest effects on obesity among the four types of air pollution. The elderly, women, individuals with low level of education and income, and those who had high fat diet were more vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution. In addition, the results of the sensitivity analysis showed that those associations between ambient air pollution and obesity remained robust. These findings suggest that long-term exposure to ambient air pollutant (particularly PM10) may be positively associated with obesity in Chinese rural adults, especially among the elderly, women, individuals with low education and income, as well as unhealthy lifestyles. Endometriosis is a gynaecological disease characterised by the presence of endometriotic tissue outside of the uterus impacting a significant fraction of women of childbearing age. Evidence from epidemiological studies suggests a relationship between risk of endometriosis and exposure to some organochlorine persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, these chemicals are numerous and occur in complex and highly correlated mixtures, and to date, most studies have not accounted for this simultaneous exposure. Linear and logistic regression models are constrained to adjusting for multiple exposures when variables are highly intercorrelated, resulting in unstable coefficients and arbitrary findings. Advanced machine learning models, of emerging use in epidemiology, today appear as a promising option to address these limitations. In this study, different machine learning techniques were compared on a dataset from a case-control study conducted in France to explore associations between mixtures of POPs and deep ecity of machine learning approaches. Applying a battery of complementary algorithms may be a strategic approach to decipher complex exposome-health associations when the underlying structure is unknown. The dissemination of antibiotic resistance (AR) has attracted global attention because of the increasing antibiotic treatment failure it has caused. Through natural transformation, a live bacterium takes up extracellular DNA (exDNA), which facilitates AR dissemination. However, recovery of exDNA from water samples is challenging. In this study, we validated a consecutive ultrafiltration-based protocol to simultaneously recover intracellular DNA (inDNA), dissolved exDNA (Dis_exDNA, dissolved in the bulk water), and adsorbed exDNA (Ads_exDNA, adsorbed to the surfaces of suspended particles). Using hollow fiber ultrafiltration (HFUF), all DNA fractions were concentrated from environmental water samples, after which Dis_exDNA (supernatant) was separated from inDNA and Ads_exDNA (pellets) using centrifugation. Ads_exDNA was washed off from the pellets with proteinase K and sodium phosphate buffer. Dis_exDNA and Ads_exDNA were further concentrated using centrifugal ultrafiltration, from which silica binding was performed. inDNA was extracted from washed pellets with a commercial kit. For inDNA, HFUF showed recovery efficiencies of 96.5 ± 18.5% and 88.0 ± 2.0% for total cells and cultured Escherichia coli, respectively (n = 3). To represent all possible DNA fragments in water environment, exDNA with different lengths (10.0, 4.0, 1.0, and 0.5 kbp) were spiked to test the recovery efficiencies for Dis_exDNA. The whole process achieved 62.2%-62.9% recovery for 10 and 4 kbp exDNA, and 38.8%-44.5% recovery for 1.0 and 0.5 kbp exDNA. Proteinase K treatment enhanced the recovery of Ads_exDNA by 4.0-10.7 times. The protocol was applied to water samples from an urban river in Tokyo, Japan. The abundance of AR genes (ARGs) in inDNA, Dis_exDNA, and Ads_exDNA increased downstream of wastewater treatment plants. ARGs in Ads_exDNA and Dis_exDNA accounted for 1.8%-26.7% and 0.03%-20.9%, respectively, of the total DNA, implying that Ads_exDNA and Dis_exDNA are nonnegligible potential pools for the horizontal transfer of ARGs.
