Two groups of baboons (n = 8 each), were infected with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae to establish chronic infections. The two groups plus a new malaria control group (n = 8) were inoculated three times with Plasmodium knowlesi parasites at 1-month intervals. After three P. knowlesi infections, we observed (i) reduced clinical symptoms in all groups with each subsequent infection, (ii) increased IgG and IgG1 levels in the malaria control (Pk-only) group, (iii) increased IgG, IgG1, CD14+, and CD14- CD16+ levels in the Schistosoma-treated (Schisto/PZQ+Pk) group, and (iv) significantly lower IgG and IgG1 levels compared to those of the Pk-only group, reduced CD4+ CD45RO+ levels, and increased levels of CD14- CD16+ cells in the coinfected (Schisto+Pk) group. Chronic S. mansoni infection does not compromise establishment of clinical immunity after multiple malaria infections, with nonclassical monocytes seeming to play a role. Failure to develop robust antibody and memory T cells may have a long-term impact on acquired immunity to malaria infection.Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1), a diverse family of multidomain proteins expressed on the surface of malaria-infected erythrocytes, is an important target of protective immunity against malaria. Our group recently studied transcription of the var genes encoding PfEMP1 in individuals from Papua, Indonesia, with severe or uncomplicated malaria. We cloned and expressed domains from 32 PfEMP1s, including 22 that were upregulated in severe malaria and 10 that were upregulated in uncomplicated malaria, using a wheat germ cell-free expression system. We used Luminex technology to measure IgG antibodies to these 32 domains and control proteins in 63 individuals (11 children). At presentation to hospital, levels of antibodies to PfEMP1 domains were either higher in uncomplicated malaria or were not significantly different between groups. Using principal component analysis, antibodies to 3 of 32 domains were highly discriminatory between groups. These included two domains upregulated in severe malaria, a DBLβ13 domain and a CIDRα1.6 domain (which has been previously implicated in severe malaria pathogenesis), and a DBLδ domain that was upregulated in uncomplicated malaria. Antibody to control non-PfEMP1 antigens did not differ with disease severity. Antibodies to PfEMP1 domains differ with malaria severity. Lack of antibodies to locally expressed PfEMP1 types, including both domains previously associated with severe malaria and newly identified targets, may in part explain malaria severity in Papuan adults.Chemical manifestations of strong light-matter coupling have recently been a subject of intense experimental and theoretical studies. Here we review the present status of this field. Section 1 is an introduction to molecular polaritonics and to collective response aspects of light-matter interactions. Characterization of the genetic profile will allow risk stratification of patients before theranostic radionuclide management of advanced cancers and offers the opportunity to minimize toxicity while preserving optimal individualized efficacy in the practice of personalized precision nuclear oncology. Our review of a single-center experience of prospective radionuclide theranostic management of metastatic non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), NETs, and castration-resistant prostate cancer (metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer [mCRPC]) over the past decade, and comparison with published studies, shows that while the risk of significant myelotoxicity is generally low, at less then 3%, the consequences in the small minority of patients who develop MDS or AL are substantial, and survival is poor. Timely identification of patients at heightened risk of hematologic toxic complication, using novel genomic technology before institution of radionuclide therapy, will facilitate amelioration of myelotoxicity. Although cervical cancer is the most prevalent HPV-related malignancy in women, the virus is also responsible for a significant percentage of anal, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. A comprehensive approach to mitigating cervical cancer includes HPV vaccination (primary prevention), screening and treatment of precancerous lesions (secondary prevention), and diagnosis and treatment of invasive cancer (tertiary prevention). Although a successful strategy, there are opportunities to innovate and increase access that can also be adapted to address the unique clinical care gaps that exist with the other anogenital cancers. The Society for Women's Health Research held a series of interdisciplinary meetings and events, during which expert researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and health care policy leaders evaluated the current landscape of HPV-related cancers and their effects on women's health. This report summarizes the discussions of this working group and areas it identified in which to address gaps in primary and secondary prevention approaches to improve access and health outcomes for women with HPV-related anogenital cancers.Background The use of Telemedicine is growing, and its application in palliative medicine may facilitate patient care and be a solution to the growing pressures on hospital services in these pandemic times. Materials and Methods Articles published between 2010 and 2020 were identified through PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar searches. We used Arksey and O'Malley's five-step framework to delimit and guide the initial search results. Results The search identified 291 articles, of which 16 are included in this review. The selected studies were sufficiently detailed to allow their evaluation and answer our research questions. We report here that A. baumannii can directly regulate several stress-related pathways via the two-component regulatory system BfmRS. Similar to previous studies, results from transcriptomic analysis showed that mutation of the BfmR response regulator causes dysregulation of genes required for the oxidative stress response, the osmotic stress response, the misfolded protein/heat shock response, Csu pilus/fimbria production, and capsular polysaccharide biosynthesis. We also found that the BfmRS system is involved in controlling siderophore biosynthesis and transport, and type IV pili production. link3 We provide evidence that BfmR binds to various stress-related promoter regions and show that BfmR alone can directly activate transcription of some stress-related genes. Additionally, we show that the BfmS sensor kinase acts as a BfmR phosphatase to negatively regulate BfmR activity.
