The results showed that the solvation energy and solvent accessible surface area are the main forces, and the molecular weight, boiling point, and topological radius of the POPs were the key molecular features affecting their degradation ability. As reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is now considered as one of the major threats to global health and a principal risk factor for noncommunicable diseases. Meanwhile, the increasing worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity is attracting more public attentions. Recently, accumulating epidemiological studies have provided evidence that overweight and obesity may be partially attributable to environmental exposure to air pollution. This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence for the correlation between exposure to various outdoor and indoor air pollutants (mainly particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) and overweight and obesity outcomes in recent years. Moreover, it discusses the multiple effects of air pollution during exposure periods throughout life and sex differences in populations. This review also describes the potential mechanism underlying the increased risk of obesity caused by air pollution, including inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic imbalance, intestinal flora disorders and epigenetic modifications. Finally, this review proposes macro- and micro-measures to prevent the negative effects of air pollution exposure on the obesity prevalence.Manganese (Mn) is a common environmental pollutant. Mn exposure can lead to neurodegenerative diseases resembling Parkinson's disease, and has become a major public health concern. However, the mechanism of Mn-induced neurotoxicity in the brain is not clear. Fecal microbiome transplantation (FMT) may alleviate the neurotoxicity of Mn exposure by remodeling the gut microbiota. In this study, MnCl2 (manganese chloride) was administered to mice as in drinking water (Mn 200 mg/L), and fecal matter from donor mice was administered by oral gavage every other day to the recipient mice. The Mn exposure model (Mn group) and FMT model (Mn+FMT group) were established and analyzed 5 weeks post-exposure. The Wipi1 gene exhibited the most significant increase associated with Mn exposure and Mn+FMT treatment groups based on transcriptome analysis. Combined analysis of transcriptomics and proteomics demonstrated that the apelin signaling pathway is the main pathway affected by FMT during Mn exposure. Immunofluorescence and Western blot showed that the expression of key proteins (Beclin-1, LC-3B, and PINK1) associated with autophagy in the hippocampus was robustly activated in the Mn exposure group, but attenuation was observed in Mn+FMT mice, suggesting a critical role of autophagy in neurotoxicity induced by Mn exposure. Our research provides evidence for the neurotoxic effects of Mn exposure through autophagy activation and provides an underlying mechanism of FMT protection against Mn-induced neurotoxicity through regulation of the apelin signaling pathway.Stimulus-responsive self-assembling prodrug-based nanomedicine has emerged as a novel paradigm in controlled drug delivery. All-trans retinoic acid (RA), one of vitamin A metabolites, induces apoptotic cancer cell death, but its clinical applications are limited by weak anticancer efficacy. To fully maximize the therapeutic potential of RA, we exploited the unique chemistry of arylboronic acid which undergoes hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-triggered degradation to release quinone methide (QM) that alkylates glutathione (GSH) to disrupt redox homeostasis and is also converted into hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA) to suppress the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Here, we report that boronated retinoic acid prodrug (RABA) can be formulated into self-deliverable nanoassemblies which release both RA and QM in a H2O2-triggered self-immolative manner to exert cooperative anticancer activities. RABA nanoassemblies exert anticancer effects by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated apoptosis, eliciting immunogenic cell death (ICD) and suppressing angiogenic VEGF expression. selleck chemicals The excellent anticancer efficacy of RABA nanoassemblies can be explained by benefits of self-assembling prodrug-based drug self-delivery and cooperative anticancer actions. Noncognitive skills have a considerable role in influencing nursing students' performance in clinical and educational settings. Understanding how nursing students and educators perceive noncognitive skills is important given the broad classifications of noncognitive competencies.
This study sought to examine nursing students' and educators' perception of noncognitive skills.
This study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach.
This study was conducted virtually via Zoom in one university in Singapore.
Purposive sampling through a maximum variation technique was used to select 35 nursing students and 12 educators.
Semistructured interviews were conducted through eight virtual face-to-face focus group discussions. Interviews were audio- and videorecorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed through thematic analysis.
The participants stated that individual and interpersonal skills contribute to one's noncognitive skills. Two themes emerged from the participants' narratives (1) the abilitg the noncognitive abilities of nurses.

However nursing and midwifery academics may lack the awareness and knowledge required to share and develop cultural safety practices with their students. Specific cultural safety professional development for academics may be needed.
This research explores how nursing and midwifery academics at an Australian university understand cultural safety and whether they are equipped to embed it in the curriculum. It also examines whether professional development workshops can support academics to prepare for cultural safety.
An intervention involving three cultural safety professional development workshops was offered to nursing academics at an Australian university. The authors used qualitative surveys to consider whether the workshops deepened participants' understanding of cultural safety and developed the self-reflection required to embed cultural safion requirements.In this article, cytotoxicity, the mechanisms of cytotoxic activity, genotoxicity, and interaction with DNA and proteins, of two Cu(II) complexes with a salicylaldehyde derivative (4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde) and α-diimine (2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)) are reported. Both Cu(II) complexes performed cytotoxic effects against all tested malignant cell lines. Complexes exerted highest cytotoxicity against HeLa and A375 malignant cell lines. The cytotoxic activity of Cu(II) complex with phen as a α-diimine co-ligand was significantly higher in comparison with cytotoxic activity of Cu(II) complex with bipy. Pretreatment with specific inhibitors of caspase-3, caspase-8 or caspase-9, in order to clear up the mode of cell death triggered by two Cu(II) complexes in HeLa cells, indicated the ability of these complexes to induce apoptosis through activation of target caspases. Cu(II)-phen complex exhibited significant antioxidant activity compared with Cu(II)-bipy complex, and showed a better effect on reducing intracellular ROS levels in HeLa cells. Tested complexes did not display genotoxic potential in human peripheral blood leucocytes, but exhibited an antigenotoxic effect in post-treatment, after H2O2 exposure. The study of the in vitro biological properties regarding their affinity towards CT (calf-thymus) DNA and serum albumins showed that the compounds can intercalate to CT DNA, and bind reversibly and tightly to the albumins. Molecular docking studies of the ability of compounds to bind to biomacromolecules are consistent with in vitro studies.Central nervous system (CNS) disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), have become severe health concern worldwide. The treatment of the CNS diseases is of great challenges due largely to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). On the one hand, BBB protects brain from the harmful exogenous molecules via inhibiting their entry into the brain. On the other hand, it also hampers the transport of therapeutic drugs into the brain, resulting in the difficulties in treating the CNS diseases. In the past decades, nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems have shown great potentials in overcoming the BBB owing to their unique physicochemical properties, such as small size and specific morphology. In addition, functionalization of nanomaterials confers these nanocarriers controlled drug release features and targeting capacities. These properties make nanocarriers the potent delivery systems for treating the CNS disorders. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in nanoparticles-based systems for the CNS delivery, including the conventional and innovative systems. The prerequisites, drawbacks and challenges of nanocarriers (such as protein corona formation) in the CNS delivery are also discussed.
