There were 49 urgent cases, and interventions were carried out in 21 of them (43%). Afterwards, 8 cases were referred to the PRS (38% of 21 intervened; 16% of the total number of cases). The program will be implemented progressively in the rest of the provinces in Castilla y León.Introduction currently the treatment of mental illness by antidepressants is very frequent. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most prescribed antidepressants worldwide and have been associated with alterations in accommodation or pupil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of fluoxetine on the pupillary reflex and the accommodation in young population. Methodology The study group included seven patients diagnosed with depression and treated with fluoxetine; 22 subjects were included as a control group. The pupillary reflexes and the accommodative state were evaluated using the Power Refractor II pupilometer. Five phases of 3 seconds each were measured. In phase 2 there was a glare with a white light. Results For the pupil diameter, maximum and minimum values were obtained in the group of patients treated with fluoxetine than in the control in all the measurement phases. For the control group, a maximum pupillary contraction is observed in the glare phase, however, in the study group it is observed in the phase after glare. As for the accommodation, there are no significant differences between the two groups. Conclusions In patients treated with fluoxetine there are pupillary alterations like a bigger pupillary diameters and slower pupillary contraction. The lack of conclusive results in terms of accommodation does not mean that there are no changes related to it, whose detection requires future studies with different methodologies and with a larger sample size.Self-injury is a mental health-related behavior people engage in to feel pain because they feel numb, to experience physical pain to ease their psychological pain, or to experience an emotional release. Self-injury is more common in patients with other co-occurring anxiety or mood disorders. An addictive component to self-injury has been identified related to an increase in dopamine levels from the self-injury, which then disrupts normal dopamine production similar to substance use disorders. Instruments are available to help identify patients who self-injure along with questions that should be asked in the course of a mental health assessment and physical examination. Patients with self-injury should be treated for any underlying mental health disorder as well as for self-injury, which includes therapy strategies and medications. Nurses can play a vital role in identifying and treating this disorder, which carries risk factors including infection, accidental death, and a higher risk of suicide. Method The intervention targeted staff nurses on a medical-surgical floor and included a revised diabetes toolkit, development of an education process for patients with diabetes, and multimodality delivery of education about diabetes care. Results Evaluation of the intervention was accomplished through a pre- and postsurvey measuring nurses' confidence. GSK1838705A Nurses' confidence improved postintervention (S = 26, p = .04). Conclusion The project outcome aligned with similar diabetes education projects in the literature that reflected an increase in nurse confidence following an educational intervention. Yet, many novice RNs have not been adequately prepared during their undergraduate programs to care for them. Method A large southwestern Magnet comprehensive cancer center piloted integrating the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)-Undergraduate Curriculum into their nurse residency program during 2018 with 55 new RNs. Results A pre-and posteducation evaluation questionnaire measured comfort with caring for patients with serious illness, competence, and knowledge in six areas of palliative care. All eight evaluation questions demonstrated statistically significant improvement posteducational intervention. Many nurse residents reported a change in clinical practice 1 month posteducation. Conclusion The nurse residency is an opportune training time to prepare novice nurses to provide primary palliative care for all patients with serious illness and their families.
