ng.Deafness occurs rarely in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia. Hydroxyurea-induced leg ulcer has been found in patients on long-term hydroxyurea therapy. We present a 53 year old man who developed spontaneous bilateral deafness shortly after he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia and subsequently developed hydroxyurea induced leg ulcer in the course of treatment. A 53 year-old male presented to our clinic with six months history of left abdominal mass, associated with easy satiety, occasional fever, night sweats, loss of appetite, weight loss, easy fatiguability and bilateral leg swelling. Physical examination showed a middle-aged man in no obvious distress, afebrile, anicteric, pale, with no peripheral lympadenopathy but had bilateral pitting pedal edema to the lower third. There was no significant finding on the chest. Abdominal examination showed hepatosplenomagaly. Full blood count showed anaemia, hyperleucocytosis and thrombocytosis. Peripheral blood film and bone marrow aspiration examinations were in keeping with chronic myeloid leukaemia. The BCR/ABL-1 transcript was negative, thus he was started on hydroxyurea in addition to other supportive treatment. Before commencement of hydroxyurea therapy, he spontaneously developed bilateral sensorineural deafness. Subsequently, he also developed leg ulcers, having been on hydroxyurea therapy for seven years which healed within eight weeks on discontinuation of hydroxyurea. Spontaneous deafness can occur in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia due to hyperleucocytosis and urgent cytoreduction may help to prevent this complication. In addition, leg ulcer due to long-term hydroxyurea therapy can occur and usually do not respond to the conventional treatment but discontinuation of hydroxyurea.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common cause of bladder outlet obstruction in men worldwide. African men are known to have larger mean prostate volumes than other races. Giant benign prostatic hyperplasia (GBPH) is defined as prostate size greater than 200 grams. Management of GBPH is associated with several challenges which have been under-reported from the African sub-region.

To highlight the peculiarities of clinical presentation, surgical management and outcome of GBPH.

Men with BPH and trans-rectal ultrasound estimated prostate volume > 200 grams who were scheduled for open simple prostatectomy between January and December 2016 in our hospital were prospectively studied.

Four patients with GBPH had simple prostatectomy during the period under review. Their ages ranged from 68 to 78 years with a mean age of 73.7 years.Three patients (75.0%) had transvesical prostatectomy while one (25.0%) had retropubic prostatectomy. The enucleated prostate specimen were found to weigh 312.1g, 396.4g, 420.8g and 450.0g respectively with mean weight of 394.8 ±50.2g and mean operation time of 111.7 ±19.7 minutes. They all had blood transfusion post-operatively with mean transfusion of 3±1.5 pints of blood per patient with relatively longer hospital stay (mean 10 days).

The surgical management of GBPH can be quite challenging. Recalcitrant gross haematuria, chronic urinary retention and renal impairment are possible modes of presentation. Open simple prostatectomy is the best option for treatment in our environment. It is associated with improved quality of life and minimal morbidity in expert hands.

Biomarkers of susceptibility to COVID-19 are being investigated by many scientists all over the world. The ABO blood group antigens are the most frequently studied genetic markers. Reports from China and USA have shown that people with blood group A are more susceptible to COVID- 19 while those with blood group O are least susceptible.

The ABO blood group of 51 patients with COVID-19 admitted at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Nigeria was determined and compared with the ABO blood group distribution in the general population.

Out of the 51 patients, 39 (76.5%) were males and 12 (23.5%) were females, giving a male female ratio of 3.251. Out of the 51 patients, 29 (56.9%) had blood group O, 12 (23.5%) had blood group A, 10 (19.6%) had blood group B and none (0%) had blood group AB. This blood group distribution was comparable to the blood group distribution in the general population.

Biologics use in rheumatic disease, rheumatoid arthritis was first documented in Nigeria in 2007. Ever since then, the two available biologics in Nigeria, Etanercept( Enbrel) and Rituximab( Mabthera) have been used in the management of diverse conditions. Many of the indications have been off label.
