Despite the common occurrence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), there is limited evidence to guide revascularization.

We investigated the long-term outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with HF and significant CAD across the spectrum of ejection fraction, using a large national cohort of patients from the Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Centers in the US. Patients with HF were stratified into groups, HFpEF, HF with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF), and HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and compared to patients with no preoperative HF. We analysed 10 396 patients. Despite an increased hazard in the first year following revascularization, the long-term survival (median follow-up 6.6 years; interquartile range 3.7-10.1) of HFpEF post-CABG was similar to controls (hazard ratio 0.85, 95% confidence interval 0.68-1.06), but survival progressively declined with HFmrEF and HFrEF. Similar trends were seen with recurreABG in HFpEF patients and suggest continuum of mortality risk for ischaemic HF when stratified by baseline ejection fraction before revascularization.WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT? Little is known about how PTSD and dementia in Veterans is identified by health care providers. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE? Healthcare providers identify those behavioural symptoms experienced by older people living with dementia that represent an unmet need associated with PTSD secondary to military service. Once healthcare providers recognize the presence of symptoms relevant to PTSD, they modify their care approach to include focused/tailored non-pharmacological care interventions that address environmental and situational variables that reflect military action. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE? Specialized education and training is needed to improve the identification of PTSD when existent with other co-occurring neurocognitive conditions such as delirium, dementia and depression. With an ageing Veteran population in Canada, mental health nurses need to be knowledgeable about the care for Veteran specific mental health needs.Coral reefs are iconic ecosystems with immense ecological, economic and cultural value, but globally their carbonate-based skeletal construction is threatened by ocean acidification (OA). Identifying coral species that have specialised mechanisms to maintain high rates of calcification in the face of declining seawater pH is of paramount importance in predicting future species composition, and growth of coral reefs. Here, we studied multiple coral species from two distinct volcanic CO2 seeps in Papua New Guinea to assess their capacity to control their calcifying fluid (CF) chemistry. Several coral species living under conditions of low mean seawater pH, but with either low or high variability in seawater pH, were examined and compared with those living in 'normal' (non-seep) ambient seawater pH. We show that when mean seawater pH is low but highly variable, corals have a greater ability to maintain constant pHcf in their CF, but this characteristic was not linked with changes in abundance. Within less variable low pH seawater, corals with limited reductions in pHcf at the seep sites compared with controls tended to be more abundant at the seep site than at the control site. However, this finding was strongly influenced by a single species (Montipora foliosa), which was able to maintain complete pHcf homeostasis. Overall, although our findings indicate that there might be an association between ecological success and greater pHcf homeostasis, further research with additional species and at more sites with differing seawater pH regimes is required to solidify inferences regarding coral ecological success under future OA.
Older adults are significantly less likely than their younger counterparts to engage in physical activity. Comprehensive policies to support healthy ageing thus need to include components encouraging greater participation in physical activity in later life. This study tested potential messages for use in health communication campaigns aimed at increasing physical activity among older adults.

Twelve written messages designed to encourage older adults to increase their levels of physical activity were rated by Australians aged 60-92years (n=369; 54% female) on the variables of likeability and perceived effectiveness.

Ratings for all the tested messages were high across both outcome variables. The message Move more, live longer scored most favourably, with large majorities of participants liking this message (87%) and considering it effective (81%). Messages featuring rhyming or alliteration were rated significantly higher on both outcomes than messages without these attributes (all Ps<.001).

Person-centred care meets patients' ethical needs by protecting their autonomy and dignity and respecting their choices; it is essential to enhance patient outcomes. Therefore, it is important to identify the predictors of the practice of advocating patients' rights and dignity and providing person-centred care among mental health nurses to foster competency and ensure the highest quality of care.

This cross-sectional study included 220 mental health nurses in South Korea. It measured their general and work-related characteristics, moral sensitivity, and person-centred care. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the person-centred care predictors.

The most potent person-centred care predictor was moral sensitivity (β = .35, p < .001). Other predictors included prior biomedical ethics education (β = .15, p = .013) and marital status (β = .14, p = .025). The regression model had 28.0% explanatory power.

Mental health nurses' moral sensitivity must be increased to improve their person-centred care.

Nurses should receive continuous education to remain aware of and maintain a high level of moral sensitivity and be encouraged to continue the person-centred practice. Organizational and policy support is needed to promote the practice of person-centred care in the workplace.

Here we use the near-extinct Mariana Islands reedwarbler radiation to showcase how ancient DNA approaches can allow insights into the population dynamics of extinct species and threatened populations for which historical museum specimens or material with low DNA yield (e.g., scats, feathers) are the only sources for DNA. Despite their having paraphyletic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) support the distinctiveness of critically endangered Acrocephalus hiwae and the other three species in the radiation that went extinct between the 1960s and 1990s. Two extinct species, A. yamashinae and A. buy UBCS039 luscinius, were deeply divergent from each other and from a third less differentiated lineage containing A. hiwae and extinct A. nijoi. Both mtDNA and SNPs suggest that the two isolated populations of A. hiwae from Saipan and Alamagan Islands are sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecies recognition and separate conservation management. We detected no significant differences in genetic diversity or inbreeding between Saipan and Alamagan, nor strong signatures of geographical structuring within either island. However, the implications of possible signatures of inbreeding in both Saipan and Alamagan, and long-term population declines in A. hiwae that pre-date modern anthropogenic threats require further study with denser population sampling. Our study highlights the value that conservation genomics studies of island radiations have as windows onto the possible future for the world's biota as climate change and habitat destruction increasingly fragment their ranges and contribute to rapid declines in population abundances.Speciation genomic studies have revealed that genomes of diverging lineages are shaped jointly by the actions of gene flow and selection. These evolutionary forces acting in concert with processes such as recombination and genome features such as gene density shape a mosaic landscape of divergence. We investigated the roles of recombination and gene density in shaping the patterns of differentiation and divergence between the cyclically parthenogenetic ecological sister-taxa, Daphnia pulicaria and Daphnia pulex. First, we assembled a phased chromosome-scale genome assembly using trio-binning for D. pulicaria and constructed a genetic map using an F2-intercross panel to understand sex-specific recombination rate heterogeneity. Finally, we used a ddRADseq data set with broad geographic sampling of D. pulicaria, D. pulex, and their hybrids to understand the patterns of genome-scale divergence and demographic parameters. Our study provides the first sex-specific estimates of recombination rates for a cyclical parthenogen, and unlike other eukaryotic species, we observed male-biased heterochiasmy in D. pulicaria, which may be related to this somewhat unique breeding mode. Additionally, regions of high gene density and recombination are generally more divergent than regions of suppressed recombination. Outlier analysis indicated that divergent genomic regions are probably driven by selection on D. pulicaria, the derived lineage colonizing a novel lake habitat. Together, our study supports a scenario of selection acting on genes related to local adaptation shaping genome-wide patterns of differentiation despite high local recombination rates in this species complex. Finally, we discuss the limitations of our data in light of demographic uncertainty.Here low-voltage nonvolatile organic memory transistors, featuring high charge-carrier mobility and outstanding data-retention characteristics, by employing water-soluble reactive polymer blends as a gate-insulating memory layer are demonstrated. Blend films of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA) (PVAPAMPSA) are prepared from their aqueous solutions with various molar ratios of PAMPSA (0-18 mol%) and thermally annealed at 70 and 110 °C. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are fabricated by depositing poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) channel layers on the thermally treated PVAPAMPSA films. Results show that the hole mobility of OFETs is remarkably increased (≈294 times at 70 °C and ≈42 times at 110 °C) by adding only 2 mol% PAMPSA to the PVA films and further improved at 10 mol% PAMPSA (>11.7 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 70 °C and >3.8 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 110 °C). The hysteresis characteristics are rather strengthened for the PVAPAMPSA layers by annealing at 110 °C due to the formation of cross-linking sites, even though the OFETs with the pristine PVA layers do almost lose hysteresis characteristics at 110 °C.
