Isothiocyanates, monoterpenes, and leaf volatiles that are components of essential oils induce the expression of heat shock protein genes in plant systems. Here, the modes of heat shock responses induced by the essential oil compounds and their heat-tolerance-enhancing activities are described. Traditionally, green manure produced from essential-oil-containing plants has been used because such manure is thought to have beneficial effects in fertilizing, allelopathic, antibacterial, and animal-repellent activities. In addition to these effects, stress (especially heat stress)-tolerance-enhancing activities can be expected. Biostimulants containing such essential oils may be able to maintain the yield and quality of crops under increasing ambient temperatures. In this review, chemicals that enhance the heat tolerance of plants are designated as heat tolerance enhancers (HTLEs). Some essential oil compounds can be categorized as HTLEs available for biostimulants.The aerial parts of Satureja metastasiantha were hydrodistilled for 3 h using a Clevenger-type apparatus. The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography/flame ionization detector and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, simultaneously, the main compounds of which were characterized as p-cymene (22.3%), thymol (21.0%), carvacrol (18.4%), and γ-terpinene (12.1%). Antioxidant capacity, acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition effects, and antimicrobial and antifungal properties of the species were evaluated. The anticholinesterase activity of the essential oil of S. metastasiantha was observed with 30% inhibition at 200 μg/mL. The essential oil of the species showed activity against Staphylococcus aureus with 128 μg/mL minimum inhibitory concentration value.Objectives Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder associated with pregnancy and is the leading cause of both maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Recent reports suggest that free radical-induced endothelial cell injury might be an etiologic factor in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of vitamins C and E for the prevention of preeclampsia. Methods This clinical trial was conducted in the year 2018 in the clinical centers of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences. One hundred and sixty nulliparous women aged 18-38 years without any risk factors for preeclampsia were divided into two groups. The first group received a 400-IU/day dose of vitamin E orally and a 1000-mg/day dose of vitamin C with iron tablets during 20-24 weeks of pregnancy, while the control group received only iron tablets. Finally, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency distribution tables. Results The incidence of preeclampsia in the control group was 17.5% and in the intervention group was 5%, which was significantly different. The mean systolic pressures before and after intervention were 99.43 ± 7.8 and 12.44 ± 19.1, respectively, in the control group, and 99.3 ± 8.3 and 106.12 ± 13.25, respectively, in the intervention group (P  less then  0.001). The mean diastolic pressures before and after intervention in the control group were 62.7 ± 13.6 and 62.7 ± 4.7 (P  less then  0.001), respectively. Conclusion The results of this study show that vitamins C and E have protective effects against preeclampsia by alleviating the overall blood pressure.Infertility is a problem across almost all cultures and societies. Saccharum officinarum juice (SOJ) is a widely consumed, energy-rich, nutritious substance that has many minerals and enzymes. Saccharum officinarum plant was reported to have anti-thrombosis, anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulatory activities. This study evaluated the reproductive effects of S. officinarum juice in male Wistar rats. A sugarcane press juicer was used to extract S. officinarum juice. Twenty male Wistar rats (100-120 g) grouped into four (n = 5) received 1.0 mL/kg/day distilled water (control), and 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 mL/kg/day of fresh S. officinarum juice once daily for 8 weeks via gavage. Sperm analysis, histology of testes and epididymides were evaluated by microscopy. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in assessing the serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone. Data were analyzed using the analysis of variance at a significance of p less then 0.05. SOJ increased fasting blood glucose levels in 3.2 and 10.0 mL/kg groups. The 10.0 mL/kg juice caused a significant increase in testosterone level and sperm count, and it also increased the percentage of aberrant sperm and decreased sperm viability. Saccharum officinarum juice impaired the histological integrity of the testes and epididymides. Thus, S. officinarum juice adversely altered the reproductive functions of male Wistar rats by reducing sperm quality and disrupting testicular architecture.Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is one of the most aggressive tumors with a microenvironment marked by hypoxia and starvation. Galectin-3 has been evaluated in solid tumors and seems to present both pro/anti-tumor effects. So, this study aims to characterize the expression of Galectin-3 from pancreatic tumor cells and analyze its influence for cell survive and motility in mimetic microenvironment. When cultivated in simultaneously hypoxic/deprived condition, Mia PaCa-2 also presented increasing for the Galectin-3 secreted levels. Treatment of PANC-1 cells with lactose increased the death rate when cells were incubated simultaneously hypoxic/deprived condition. In a patient with acute hemodynamic instability, we propose a step-by-step approach as follows 1) rapid initial ultrasound assessment of heart function we recommend immediate transthoracic echocardiogram in any patient with acute hemodynamic alteration before starting specific treatments. link3 2) pathophysiological understanding of heart and circulation interaction we recommend using a non-invasive approach to assess ventriculo-arterial coupling. 3) functional hemodynamic monitoring we recommend using a functional hemodynamic monitoring (FHM) approach with passive leg raising manoeuvre (PLR) in all patients. 4) treatment we recommend to treat the hemodynamic derangement based on the echocardiographic evaluation and pathophysiological understanding improved by assessing the interaction between the heart and the circulation. We named such approach BEAT, which stands for Browse the heart, measure the Elastances, Assess volume status, and Treat. Combining bedside echocardiography, including the evaluation of the interaction between the heart and the circulation, with FHM offers the opportunity to personalise the hemodynamic management to the specific requirements.Neurological outcome and quality of live are of uttermost interest in survivors of cardiac arrest. Assuming acceptable rates of return of spontaneous circulation, the long-term effects on neurological function and quality of live after cardiopulmonary resuscitation remain unsatisfactory. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) can reduce low-flow times and therefore provide adequate cerebral tissue perfusion and oxygenation. This may improve favorable outcomes after cardiac arrest. Due to the risk of procedure related complications and ethical issues, this technique should be only performed in selected patients by specially trained and experienced teams. In this review we aimed at providing an insight into the sparse evidence in this field and discussing ethical issues associated with the use of eCPR.
Patient-ventilator asynchronies are challenging during pediatric mechanical ventilation. We hypothesized that monitoring the electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi) together with the "standard" airway opening pressure (Pao) and flow-time waveforms during pressure support ventilation would improve the ability of a cohort of critical care physicians to detect asynchronies in ventilated children.

We recorded the flow, Pao and EAdi waveforms in ten consecutive patients. The recordings were split in periods of 15 sec, each reproducing a ventilator screenshot. From this pool, a team of four experts selected the most representative screenshots including at least one of the three most common asynchronies (missed efforts, auto-triggering and double triggering) and split them into two versions, respectively showing or not the EAdi waveforms. The screenshots were shown in random order in a questionnaire to sixty experienced pediatric intensivists that were asked to identify any episode of patient-ventilator asynchrony.
