Students completed a voluntary short answer question paper during their otolaryngology attachment. Short answer question paper results were collated and compared to the essay examination and new end of year objective structured clinical examination.

The study comprised 160 students. Questions were validated for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.76). Correlations were determined for short answer question paper and essay results (r = 0.477), short answer question paper and objective structured clinical examination results (r = 0.355), and objective structured clinical examination and essay results (r = 0.292). On unpaired t-tests comparing the short answer question paper group and non-short answer question paper group, essay results were 1.2 marks higher (p = 0.45) and the objective structured clinical examination results were 0.09 marks lower (p = 0.74) in the short answer question paper group.

This descriptive study was conducted to identify and classify the interventions that cancer screening nurses perform based on an initial list.

The initial list was grouped into 15 interventions that corresponded to four domains and eight classes.

The study found expert consensus regarding the duties of cancer screening nurses and identified 15 interventions that should be implemented in clinical practice for cancer screening care, according to the NIC taxonomy.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an increased risk of coronary heart disease and death. We aimed to investigate the association between preoperative hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels and long-term mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) among patients with T2DM.

All patients with T2DM who underwent CABG in Sweden from 2003 to 2013 were included from the SWEDEHEART register. Information about diabetes was retrieved from the Swedish National Diabetes Register. We used Cox regression to calculate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause mortality and also a combination of death or a major cardiovascular event (MACE).

In total, 6313 patients were included. During a mean follow-up time of 5.5 (±3.8) years, (34,482 person-years), 1630 (26%) patients died. After multivariable adjustment, HbA1c was associated with an increased risk of death in patients with HbA1c levels 9.1-10%, and >10% (HR (95% CI) 1.26 (1.04-1.53), and 1.33 (1.05-1.69), respectively). There was an increased risk for death or MACE at HbA1c levels 8.1-9%, 9.1-10%, and >10% (HR (95% CI) 1.17 (1.04-1.33), 1.44 (1.22-1.70), and 1.50 (1.22-1.84), respectively). In patients with insulin-treatment there was no association between HbA1c levels and death.

Although a number of studies have shown that Positive Action successfully achieves these goals, few studies have evaluated the program's effectiveness in rural schools. Given that rural youth are at an increased risk for risky behaviors (e.g., violence, substance use), this is a critical gap in the existing Positive Action research base. The current study assesses the impact of Positive Action on change rates of self-esteem, school hassles, aggression, and internalizing symptoms in a group (N = 1246, 52% female) of ethnically/racially diverse (27% White, 23% African American, 12% mixed race/other, 8% Latino, 30% as American Indian) middle school youth (age range 9-20) located in two violent, low-income rural counties in North Carolina. One county engaged in Positive Action over the 3-year study window while the other county did not. Following multiple imputation and propensity score analysis, 4 two-level hierarchical linear models were run using each of the outcome measures as dependent variables. The results indicate that the program generates statistically significant beneficial effects for youth from the intervention county on self-esteem scores and school hassles scores. Although the program generates beneficial effects for intervention youth on the change in aggression scores, the finding is not statistically significant. The finding on the change in internalizing scores shows a non-significant detrimental effect the youth from the comparison county have lower internalizing scores than those from the intervention county. Among the many social media platforms available to cancer patients and providers, one platform in particular, Twitter, has become the focus for the creation of disease-specific communities, especially for those interested in, affected by, or those who perform research in the fields of rare cancers, which historically have had a dearth of reliable information available. This article will focus on the initiation and progress of one such Twitter hematology/oncology community, #mpnsm, which was originally created for the purpose of serving as a venue for improving the interaction among patients, providers, researchers, and organizations with interest in the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and to further the availability of reliable up-to-date analysis; relevant expert commentary; and readily usable information for patients, providers, and other groups interested in this field.
Organophosphates and carbamates are insecticides that are associated with high human mortality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prognostic factors affecting survival in patients with cholinesterase inhibitor (CI) poisoning.

This study included 92 patients with CI poisoning in the period from January 2005 to August 2013. We divided these patients into 2 groups (survivors vs. non-survivors), compared their clinical characteristics, and analyzed the predictors of survival.

The mean age of the included patients was 56 years (range, 16-88). The patients included 57 (62%) men and 35 (38%) women. When we compared clinical characteristics between the survivor group (n=81, 88%) and non-survivor group (n=11, 12%), there were no differences in renal function, pancreatic enzymes, or serum cholinesterase level, except for serum bicarbonate level and APACHE II score.
