Canine parvovirosis remains a common and highly infectious disease. Thus, adequate protection is essential for all dogs at any time. In this, humoral immunity plays an essential role. The presence of antibodies in adult dogs suggests immunity against the disease, and nearly all adult dogs possess antibodies (either due to previous vaccination or infection). Meanwhile, worldwide vaccination guidelines recommend measurement of pre-vaccination antibodies instead of regular triennial re-vaccinations in adult dogs. Studies have demonstrated a long lasting duration of immunity against canine parvovirus. Re-vaccination therefore possesses no beneficial effect when dogs already have pre-vaccination antibodies. Thus, when antibodies are present, unnecessary re-vaccinations that potentially cause vaccine-associated adverse events should be avoided. Hemagglutination inhibition and virus neutralization can be performed in specialized laboratories for quantitative antibody titer measurement. Semiquantitative point-of-care (POC) tests for detection of CPV antibodies are available. Since the presence of CPV antibodies in adult dogs that have been vaccinated or previously infected suggests adequate immunity against disease, these POC tests can be a useful tool in practice. They identify dogs that might potentially be unprotected and require re-vaccination during preventive health care appointments. Concerning the POC tests' quality assessment, a high specificity (low number of false positive test results) is considered the most important feature.Epilepsy is a common neurologic disease frequently encountered by small animal practitioners. The disease comprises a multiplicity of clinical presentations and etiologies and often necessitates a comprehensive as well as cost-intensive diagnostic workup. This is mandatory in order to be able to diagnose or exclude a metabolic cause of the seizures and to distinguish between idiopathic and structural epilepsy. The examination by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents a central component of the diagnostic workup, which in turn has essential effects on treatment and prognosis. In order to achieve standardized examination and comparable results, it is of utmost importance to use defined MRI protocols. Accordingly, communication and interaction between clinical institutions may be facilitated and as of yet undetected structural changes might be recorded in future MRI techniques. This review article sets particularly emphasis on the definition and classification of epilepsy as well as its diagnostic imaging procedures and refers to statistics and specialists' recommendations for the diagnostic workup in dogs.
Pigeon rotavirus A (RVA) isolates of genotype G18P[17] are causing disease outbreaks and fatalities in pigeon lofts in Australia, Germany, Belgium, Denmark and USA since 2016. Most disease outbreaks have been reported from juvenile pigeons (
forma domestica). However, reports on RVA-associated disease outbreaks in fancy pigeons in connection with fancy pigeon shows in Germany are rare.
Overall 18 pigeons (16 fancy pigeons and one racing pigeon from 9 pigeon fanciers, as well as one feral pigeon from a rescue center) were sent in for routine diagnostic necropsy including histopathologic, parasitologic and microbiologic examinations. Molecular biologic examinations for detection of RVA, circovirus, Usutu virus, West Nile virus and
were also carried out on all pigeons. An accompanying questionnaire filled in by the senders was used to generate basic information on the affected pigeon lofts.
Disease outbreaks in juvenile and adult pigeons were reported 7-14 days after fancy pigeon shows. One fancier who had previously vaccinated his pigeons with an autogenous pigeon RVA vaccine, noted no morbidity and mortality among his pigeons and thus sent in a healthy pigeon for diagnostic purposes. Reported clinical signs in the other pigeons were regurgitation, green slimy diarrhea, anorexia, apathy and death after 24 hours. OTSSP167 molecular weight Hepatic necrosis and detection of pigeon RVA isolates of genotype G18P[17] confirmed disease outbreaks caused by pigeon RVA in all pigeons, except for the vaccinated pigeon. Besides pigeon circovirus, which was detected in 15 of 18 pigeons, all other pathogens were singular findings.
In disease outbreaks following fancy pigeon shows in juvenile and adult pigeons diagnostics should include pigeon RVA of genotype G18P[17].
In disease outbreaks following fancy pigeon shows in juvenile and adult pigeons diagnostics should include pigeon RVA of genotype G18P[17].
In the present study, the benefits and difficulties of planning and conducting patient surveys in veterinary medicine were examined using 2 examples. One focus was placed on the comparison of the subjective assessment and perception of patient owners with regard to long-term investigation of disease progression.
An owner survey was conducted in dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE) and degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). In both surveys, the case system of the Clinic for Small Animals of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover was used to identify suitable cases based on appropriate diagnoses. Owners were contacted and invited to complete (digitally or postally) a multipart questionnaire on their dogs. The results of the survey were evaluated regarding their agreement with literature data. Based on the results of this evaluation, the study design, reliability of owner perception and the benefit of the survey were examined critically.
The search in the clinic's case system provided 125 suitableead to results differing in their informative value depending on the disease.
The aim of this study was to assess the distribution and frequency of uroliths in dogs in Germany and to evaluate age-, gender-, and breed-specific differences.
A total of 2772 uroliths from dogs in Germany that had been submitted from veterinary practices during the years 2017-2019 were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy.
Uroliths were analyzed as follows Struvite (44.7 %), calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite 24.5 %), cystine (15.2 %), ammonium urate (5.3 %), calcium oxalate dihydrate (weddellite 4.4 %), calcium phosphate (1.6 %), xanthine (1.2 %), whewellite/weddellite (11 %), brushite (0.4 %) and other substances (1.7 %). The dogs' median age (in years) with regards to the urolith type amounted to struvite 8, calcium oxalate (whewellite and weddellite) 10, cystine 5, brushite 11, xanthine 6.5, and ammonium urate 6 years. Struvite uroliths were most common in intact females (83.8 %) and neutered females (80.8 %), while cystine uroliths (36.7 %) and calcium oxalates (35.7 % whewellite and weddellitewner.
Dogs from Germany displayed age-, gender- and breed-specific differences in the frequency of urine calculi occurrence. Knowledge of the frequent occurrence of the distinct uroliths in Germany as well as potential breed dispositions allow the veterinarian to implement an appropriate preventive treatment plan. This would involve a targeted monitoring program for the prevention and follow-up care of the patient in conjunction with the pet owner.Physiological fibrinolysis under normal conditions progresses slowly, in contrast to coagulation which is triggered rapidly to stop bleeding and defend against microbial invasion. Methods to detect fibrinolysis abnormalities are less simple and poorly standardized compared with common coagulation tests. Fibrinolysis can be accelerated by preparing euglobulin from plasma to reduce endogenous inhibitors, or by adding plasminogen activators to normal plasma. However, these manipulations complicate interpretation of results and diagnosis of a "fibrinolysis deficit." Many observational studies on antigen levels of fibrinolysis inhibitors, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 or thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor, zymogen or active enzyme have been published. However, conclusions are mixed and there are clear problems with harmonization of results. Viscoelastic methods have the advantage of being rapid and are used as point-of-care tests. They also work with whole blood, allowing the contribution of platelets to be explored. However, there are no agreed protocols for applying viscoelastic methods in acute care for the diagnosis of hyperfibrinolysis or to direct therapy. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and the dangers of associated coagulopathy provide new challenges. A common finding in hospitalized patients is high levels of D-dimer fibrin breakdown products, indicative of ongoing fibrinolysis. Well-established problems with D-dimer testing standardization signal that we should be cautious in using results from such tests as prognostic indicators or to target therapies. The primary polypeptide sequence of von Willebrand factor (VWF) includes an N-terminal 741-amino acid VWF propeptide (VWFpp). In cells expressing VWF, the VWFpp performs two critical functions. In the Golgi, VWFpp mediates the intermolecular disulfide linkages that generate high-molecular-weight VWF multimers. Subsequently, the VWFpp, which is proteolytically cleaved from mature VWF by furin, functions to generate the endothelial storage organelles (Weibel-Palade bodies) in which VWF and a distinct collection of proteins are stored, and from where they undergo regulated secretion from the endothelium. The VWFpp is secreted from endothelial cells as dimers and circulates in plasma with at least some of the dimers associating with a noncovalent manner with the D'D3 domain of mature VWF. The VWFpp has a half-life of 2 to 3 hours in plasma, but to date no extracellular function has been determined for the molecule. Nevertheless, its large size and several biologically interesting structural features (two sets of vicinal cysteines and an RGD sequence) suggest that there may be roles that the VWFpp plays in hemostasis or associated physiological processes such as angiogenesis or wound repair.Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a severe, immune-mediated, adverse drug reaction that paradoxically induces a prothrombotic state. Particularly in the setting of cardiac surgery, where full anticoagulation is required during cardiopulmonary bypass, the management of HIT can be highly challenging, and requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this short review, the different perioperative strategies to run cardiopulmonary bypass will be summarized.Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal disorders of the hematopoietic stem cell. Classical BCR/ABL-negative MPNs include polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). Thrombotic events are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Pathogenesis of blood clotting activation involves various abnormalities of platelets, erythrocytes, and leukocytes, as well as dysfunctions of endothelial cells. Patients with MPN can be stratified in "high risk" or "low risk" of thrombosis according to established risk factors. ET and PV clinical management is highly dependent on the patient's thrombotic risk, and a risk-oriented management strategy to treat these diseases is strongly recommended. In this review, we give an overview of risk factors, pathogenesis, and thrombosis prevention and treatment in MPN.
