The results revealed that the sound pressure acting on the droplet clearly decreased before the impact of the droplets. This pressure on the droplets was quantitatively analyzed from the experimental data. Our experimental and numerical results provide deeper physical insights into contactless droplet manipulation for futuristic lab-on-a-drop applications.Chagas disease, caused by the kinetoplastid parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects between 6 and 7 million people worldwide, with an estimated 300,000 to 1 million of these cases in the United States. In the chronic phase of infection, T. cruzi can cause severe gastrointestinal and cardiac disease, which can be fatal. Currently, only benznidazole is clinically approved by the FDA for pediatric use to treat this infection in the USA. Toxicity associated with this compound has driven the search for new anti-Chagas agents. Drug repurposing is a particularly attractive strategy for neglected diseases, as pharmacological parameters and toxicity are already known for these compounds, reducing costs and saving time in the drug development pipeline. Here, we screened 7680 compounds from the Repurposing, Focused Rescue, and Accelerated Medchem (ReFRAME) library, a collection of drugs or compounds with confirmed clinical safety, against T. cruzi. We identified seven compounds of interest with potent in vitro activity against the parasite with a therapeutic index of 10 or greater, including the previously unreported activity of the antiherpetic compound 348U87. These results provide the framework for further development of new T. cruzi leads that can potentially move quickly to the clinic. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the plant growth promoting effects on Arabidopsis by Pseudomonas sp. strains associated with rhizosphere of crop plants grown in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Out of all the screened isolates, Pseudomonas PS01 isolated from maize rhizosphere showed the most prominent plant growth promoting effects on Arabidopsis and maize (Zea mays). We also found that PS01 altered root system architecture (RSA). The full genome of PS01 was resolved using high-throughput sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis identified PS01 as a member of the Pseudomonas putida subclade, which is closely related to Pseudomonas taiwanensis.. PS01 genome size is 5.3 Mb, assembled in 71 scaffolds comprising of 4820 putative coding sequence. PS01 encodes genes for the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), acetoin and 2,3-butanediol biosynthesis pathways. PS01 promoted the growth of Arabidopsis and altered the root system architecture by inhibiting primary root elongation and promoting lateral root and root hair formation. By employing gene expression analysis, genetic screening and pharmacological approaches, we suggested that the plant-growth promoting effects of PS01 and the alteration of RSA might be independent of bacterial auxin and could be caused by a combination of different diffusible compounds and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Taken together, our results suggest that PS01 is a potential candidate to be used as bio-fertilizer agent for enhancing plant growth. In the present work, the relationship curve of the coefficient of friction (COF) with varying loads of different morphology WS2 lubricating additives in the friction process at various sliding speeds was studied. On this basis, wear marks and elements on the wear surfaces after friction were analyzed, and then the anti-wear and mechanism effects of WS2 of different forms in the lubrication process were discussed. Meanwhile, the Stribeck curve was used to study the lubrication state of the lubricating oil in the friction process. It was revealed that the COF of lubricating oil containing lamellar WS2 decreased by 29.35% at optimum condition and the minimum COF was concentrated at around 100 N. The COF of lubricating oil containing spherical WS2 decreased by 30.24% and the minimum coefficient was concentrated at 120 N. The extreme pressure property of spherical WS2 was better than that of lamellar WS2, and the wear resistance of spherical WS2 was more stable when the load was over 80 N. The different morphology of WS2 additives can play anti-wear and anti-friction roles within a wide range of sliding speeds.BACKGROUND As scientific findings of air pollution and subsequent health effects have been accumulating, public interest has also been growing. Accordingly, web visualization is suggested as an effective tool to facilitate public understanding in scientific evidence and to promote communication between the public and academia. We aimed to introduce an example of easy and effective web-based visualization of research findings, relying on predicted concentrations of particulate matter ≤ 10 µg/m3 (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) obtained from our previous study in South Korea and Tableau software. Our visualization focuses on nationwide spatial patterns and temporal trends over 14 years, which would not have been accessible without our research results. click here METHODS Using predicted annual average concentrations of PM10 and NO2 across approximately 250 districts and maps of administrative divisions in South Korea during 2001-2014, we demonstrate data preprocessing and design procedures in the Tableau dashboard, comprising maps, time-series plots, and bar charts. RESULTS Our visualization allows one to identify high concentration areas, a long-term temporal trend, and the contrast between two pollutants. The application of easy tools for user-interactive options in Tableau suggests possible easy access to the scientific knowledge of non-experts. CONCLUSION Our example contributes to future studies that develop the visualization of research findings in further intuitive designs.Anxiety, mood disturbance, eating and sleep disorders, and dissatisfaction with body image are prevalent disorders in women with fibromyalgia. The authors of this study aimed to determine the effects of tryptophan (TRY) and magnesium-enriched (MG) Mediterranean diet on psychological variables (trait anxiety, mood state, eating disorders, self-image perception) and sleep quality in women with fibromyalgia (n = 22; 49 ± 5 years old). In this randomized, controlled trial, the participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the placebo group. The intervention group received a Mediterranean diet enriched with high doses of TRY and MG (60 mg of TRY and 60 mg of MG), whereas the control group received the standard Mediterranean diet. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire, Body Shape Questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Profile of Mood States (POMS-29) Questionnaire, Eating Attitudes Test-26, and Trait Anxiety Inventory were completed before and 16 weeks after the intervention. Significant differences were observed between groups after the intervention for the mean scores of trait anxiety (p = 0.001), self-image perception (p = 0.029), mood disturbance (p = 0.001), and eating disorders (p = 0.006). This study concludes that tryptophan and magnesium-enriched Mediterranean diet reduced anxiety symptoms, mood disturbance, eating disorders, and dissatisfaction with body image but did not improve sleep quality in women with fibromyalgia. The breakthrough of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan, a city of China, has damaged the status of health and quality of life. In the sequel of this epidemic or contagious disease, the patient experiences fever, chest paint, chills, a rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulties, pneumonia, and kidney failure. It has been suggested that this disease can spread through human-to-human transmission or by super spreading. By the help of the non-invasive fluid "saliva", it is easy to detect the virus. This can help with the comfort of the patient as well as healthcare personnel. Under this perspective, we discuss the epidemic situation of 2019-nCOV and its relationship with human saliva.Flatfoot is linked to secondary lower limb joint problems, such as patellofemoral pain. This study aimed to investigate the influence of medial posting insoles on the joint mechanics of the lower extremity in adults with flatfoot. Gait analysis was performed on fifteen young adults with flatfoot under two conditions walking with shoes and foot orthoses (WSFO), and walking with shoes (WS) in random order. The data collected by a vicon system were used to drive the musculoskeletal model to estimate the hip, patellofemoral, ankle, medial and lateral tibiofemoral joint contact forces. The joint contact forces in WSFO and WS conditions were compared. Compared to the WS group, the second peak patellofemoral contact force (p less then 0.05) and the peak ankle contact force (p less then 0.05) were significantly lower in the WSFO group by 10.2% and 6.8%, respectively. The foot orthosis significantly reduced the peak ankle eversion angle (p less then 0.05) and ankle eversion moment (p less then 0.05); however, the peak knee adduction moment increased (p less then 0.05). The reduction in the patellofemoral joint force and ankle contact force could potentially inhibit flatfoot-induced lower limb joint problems, despite a greater knee adduction moment.Oxidative stress has been associated to neuronal cell loss in neurodegenerative diseases. Neurons are post-mitotic cells that are very sensitive to oxidative stress-especially considering their limited capacity to be replaced. Therefore, reduction of oxidative stress, and inhibiting apoptosis, will potentially prevent neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) against H2O2 induced apoptosis in SK-N-BE neuroblastoma cells. We analysed the molecular signalling pathway involved in the apoptotic cell death. H2O2 induced an increased acetylation of p53 lysine 382, a reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential, an increased BAX/Bcl-2 ratio and consequently increased Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage. All these effects were blocked by EGb 761 treatment. Thus, EGb 761, acting as intracellular antioxidant, protects neuroblastoma cells against activation of p53 mediated pathway and intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis. Our results suggest that EGb 761, protecting against oxidative-stress induced apoptotic cell death, could potentially be used as nutraceutical for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In this work, a poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) mixed-matrix membrane was fabricated for the selective removal of 1-butanol from aqueous solutions through pervaporation. Silica nanoparticles (SNPs), which were surface-modified with surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were incorporated into the structure of the membrane. The modified membrane was characterized by thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. It was found that the surface hydrophobicity of the membrane was improved when compared to neat PTMSP by contact angle measurement. It was confirmed by SEM analysis that a uniform distribution of surface-modified SNPs throughout the PTMSP membrane was achieved. The thermogravimetric analysis detected the thermal degradation of the modified PTMSP at 370 °C, which is comparable to neat PTMSP. The pervaporation measurements showed a maximum separation factor of 126 at 63 °C for 1.5 w/w% 1-butanol in the feed.
