Implications for RehabilitationThere is a need to directly engage children and adolescents with disabilities to express themselves in health promotion research. The arts-based method of photo-elicitation may help children and adolescents with disabilities convey how they view and experience health.Children and adolescents with disabilities may need supports, including camera training, to participate in photo-elicitation.Background Sensorineural hearing loss can be cured by cochlear implantation (CI), but complications can occur. Based on when the complications develop, they are categorized as intraoperative complications, early postoperative complications, or delayed postoperative complications (>3 months after the surgery).Aims/objectives We aimed to investigate the occurrence of delayed complications after CI surgery, and identify appropriate management methods.Material and methods We analyzed 624 sensorineural hearing loss patients who had been consecutively treated with CI using the conventional surgical technique in our institution and had been followed-up until September 2017.Results A total of 43 (6.86%) patients out of the 624 CIs (627 ears) reported complications, and 9 (1.44%) were major complications and 34 (5.42%) were minor complications. Wound infection and device failure were the most common major complications, and hematoma was the most common minor complication. Conclusions and significance CI surgery is a relatively mature technology; the incidence of complications is low, and with early diagnosis and treatment most complications have a good prognosis. Head trauma was the main reason for children's complications, and patients and guardians should be given good education preoperatively about how to manage the CI postoperatively.A facile new synthetic method for the preparation of a Type-A 1-arylnaphthalene lactone skeleton was developed and used to synthesise justicidin B and several derivatives. Key synthesis steps included Hauser-Kraus annulation of a phthalide intermediate and Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling between a triflated naphthalene lactone intermediate and various potassium organotrifluoroborates. With two exceptions, the derivatives showed significant inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse macrophages. Moreover, several compounds, including justicidin B, had marked cytotoxicity towards six human tumour cell lines.Introduction An increased risk of dental caries and periodontal diseases has been reported for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients and are challenging conditions to manage.Areas covered The authors searched international databases to find all studies assessing dental/periodontal outcomes in patients with IBD and other immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID), as well as the association between IMID medications and dental/periodontal status.Expert opinion IBD are associated with a higher risk of both periodontitis and caries. Some evidence from rheumatoid arthritis suggests that periodontitis may be associated with a lower response to anti-TNF. There is no reliable evidence that IBD patients may be at greater risk of complications during routine dental care. On the basis of current data, guidelines can be proposed for the dental management focusing on the detection and eradication of infectious foci prior to the implementation of immunosuppressants/biologics and modified dental treatment protocol for invasive dental procedures that includes antibiotic prophylaxis.Mutual fidelity and partner reduction have been identified as key behavioural strategies to prevent HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly following recognition of the role that multiple concurrent sexual partnerships play in driving generalised HIV epidemics. We analysed social representations of fidelity and infidelity in a sample of 1,343 narratives about HIV written by young Africans between 1997 and 2014. The narratives were written at four different time points (1997, 2005, 2008, 2014) by authors aged 10-24 in urban and rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, South-east Nigeria, Kenya and Eswatini. We combined three analytical approaches descriptive statistics of quantifiable characteristics of the narratives, thematic data analysis and a narrative-based approach. Miransertib in vivo In the sample, fidelity is often promoted as the ideal by narrators, peers and romantic partners, in line with broader discourses around HIV prevention, romantic relationships, familial obligations, and religious and moral imperatives. However, mutual fidelity is rarely modelled in the narratives and representations of combining methods to prevent HIV from entering relationships via infidelity are uncommon. Representations of fidelity reflect loss-framed fear arousal techniques that perpetuate HIV-related stigma. Narrative-based approaches that facilitate skills-building, critical reflection and address stigma can better address fidelity and partner reduction.Introduction Metabolomics focuses on interactions among different metabolites associated with various cellular functions in cells, tissues, and organs. In recent years, metabolomics has emerged as a powerful tool to identify perturbed metabolites, pathways influenced by the environment, for protein conformational diseases (PCDs) and also offers wide clinical application.Area Covered This review provides a brief overview of recent advances in metabolomics as applied to identify metabolic variations in PCDs, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, prion disease, and cardiac amyloidosis. The 'PubMed' and 'Google Scholar' database search methods have been used to screen the published reports with key search terms metabolomics, biomarkers, and protein conformational disorders.Expert opinion Metabolomics is the large-scale study of metabolites and is deemed to overwhelm other omics. It plays a crucial role in finding variations in diseases due to protein conformational changes. However, many PCDs are yet to be identified. Metabolomics is still an emerging field; there is a need for new high-resolution analytical techniques and more studies need to be carried out to generate new information.
