Exhaustive cardiovascular load can affect neural processing and is associated with decreases in sensorimotor performance. The purpose of this study was to explore intensity-dependent modulations in brain network efficiency in response to treadmill running assessed from resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) measures.

Sixteen trained participants were tested for individual peak oxygen uptake (VO
) and performed an incremental treadmill exercise at 50% (10min), 70% (10min) and 90% speed VO
(all-out) followed by cool-down running and active recovery. Before the experiment and after each stage, borg scale (BS), blood lactate concentration (B
), resting heartrate (HR
) and 64-channel EEG resting state were assessed. To analyze network efficiency, graph theory was applied to derive small world index (SWI) from EEG data in theta, alpha-1 and alpha-2 frequency bands.

Analysis of variance for repeated measures revealed significant main effects for intensity on BS, B
, HR
and SWI. While BS, B
and HR
indicated maxima after all-out, SWI showed a reduction in the theta network after all-out.

Our explorative approach suggests intensity-dependent modulations of resting-state brain networks, since exhaustive exercise temporarily reduces brain network efficiency. Resting-state network assessment may prospectively play a role in training monitoring by displaying the readiness and efficiency of the central nervous system in different training situations.

To quantitatively evaluate the lipid layer thickness (LLT) and blinking in children with or without allergic conjunctivitis (AC), and to compare those between the different types of AC.

For this case-control study, 81 children with symptomatic AC with an average age of 9.62 ± 2.67years were enrolled and subdivided according to the subtypes of AC, including seasonal/perennial allergic conjunctivitis group and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC)/atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) group. Another 82 age-matched healthy children were enrolled as control group. All subjects underwent routine eye examination and measurements of LLT, the number of incomplete or total blinking, partial blinking rate by the LipiView interferometer over a 10-s period. Other ocular surface assessment included fluorescein tear breakup time (TBUT), lower tear meniscus height, meibomian gland loss (MGL), meibum expressibility and quality.

Pediatric patients with AC had significant thinner LLT, shorter TBUT, decreased total blinking but increased partial blinking rate, especially in those with VKC/AKC (all P < 0.05). A significant deterioration of meibomian gland parameters was observed in AC group when compared with control subjects, demonstrated by severe upper and lower MGL, lid margin abnormalities, decreased meibum expressibility, and abnormal meibum quality, all of which were worse in the severe type of AC (all P < 0.05). Thinner LLT was significantly correlated with decreased TBUT (β = 3.666, P < 0.001) and severity of upper MGL (β =  - 7.701, P = 0.002).

Decreased LLT and blinking disorders in pediatric patients with AC may contribute to lipid layer deficiency in the long run, which should be considered and appropriately diagnosed for a more precise treatment.

For instance, cercariae, the motile larvae of parasitic flukes (trematodes) may be a key source of nutrients and energy for consumers. As cercariae clonally reproduce within the digestive-gonadal gland complex of gastropod intermediate hosts that acquire nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) mainly from their diets (e.g., by grazing on primary producers), cercariae could transfer snail-derived PUFA if consumed. Through fatty acid (FA) analysis, we explored whether a change in the diet of parasitized hosts altered the FA profiles of both snail-only and trematode-containing snail tissue, thereby affecting their nutritional values. Freshwater snails (Stagnicola elodes) infected with Plagiorchis sp. were fed three different diets (cyanobacteria, green algae, and diatoms) that differed in nutritional quality with respect to FA profiles. While diet influenced the overall FA composition of both snail-only tissue and snail tissue containing trematodes, levels of certain PUFA (mainly omega-3) were largely unaffected. Trematode-containing snail tissue also generally contained more PUFA relative to snail-only tissue. Notably, both tissue types had far higher levels of PUFA than found in their diets. Our results suggest that freshwater snail hosts, and possibly their associated trematode parasites, could be trophic upgraders of key PUFA despite anthropogenically induced changes in algal communities that may lead to overall diminished PUFA contents. As such, cercariae-mediated trophic transfers of PUFA may play important roles in aquatic food webs.Classical swine fever (CSF), caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV), is a severe disease that causes huge economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. In China, CSF has been under control due to extensive vaccination since 1954. However, there are still sporadic CSF outbreaks in China. Here, we isolated 27 CSFV strains from three Chinese provinces (Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia) from 2011 to 2018. Phylogenetic analysis based on the full-length envelope glycoprotein E2 coding region revealed that 25 out of 27 CSFV isolates clustered within subgroups 2.1 and 2.2, while two strains from Gansu belonged to subgroup 1.1. The sequence identity among these 27 isolates varied from 79.3% to 99.8% (nucleotides) and from 83.1% to 99.7% (amino acids). Further analysis based on the E2 amino acid sequences showed that these new isolates have consistent amino acid substitutions, including R31K and N34S.Inactivated foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) vaccines have been used widely to control foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). However, the virions (146S) of this virus are easily dissociated into pentamer subunits (12S), which limits the immune protective efficacy of inactivated vaccines when the temperature is higher than 30 °C. A cold-chain system can maintain the quality of the vaccines, but such systems are usually not reliable in limited-resource settings. Thus, it is imperative to improve the thermostability of vaccine strains to guarantee the quality of the vaccines. In this study, four recombinant FMDV strains containing single or multiple amino acid substitutions in the structural proteins were rescued using a previously constructed FMDV type O full-length infectious clone (pO/DY-VP1). compound library inhibitor We found that single or multiple amino acid substitutions in the structural proteins affected viral replication to different degrees. Furthermore, the heat and acid stability of the recombinant viruses was significantly increased when compared with the parental virus. Three thermally stable recombinant viruses (rHN/DY-VP1Y2098F, rHN/DY-VP1V2090A-S2093H, and rHN/DY-VP1V2090A-S2093H-Y2098F) were prepared as inactivated vaccines to immunize pigs. Blood samples were collected every week to prepare sera, and a virus neutralization test showed that the substitutions S2093H and Y2098F, separately or in combination, did not affect the immunogenicity of the virus, but the Y2098F mutation increased the thermostability significantly (p less then 0.05). Therefore, the rHN/DY-VP1Y2098F mutant should be considered for use in future vaccines. The level of functioning of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) varies widely. To better understand the neurobiological mechanism associated with high-functioning ASD, we studied the rare case of a female patient with an exceptional professional career in the highly competitive academic field of Mathematics. According to the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) approach, which proposes to describe the basic dimensions of functioning by integrating different levels of information, we conducted four fMRI experiments targeting the (1) social processes domain (Theory of mind (ToM) and face matching), (2) positive valence domain (reward processing), and (3) cognitive domain (N-back). Patient's data were compared to data of 14 healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we assessed the subjective experience of our case during the experiments. The patient showed increased response times during face matching and achieved a higher total gain in the Reward task, whereas her performance in N-back and ToM was similar to HC. Her brain function differed mainly in the positive valence and cognitive domains. During reward processing, she showed reduced activity in a left-hemispheric frontal network and cortical midline structures but increased connectivity within this network. During the working memory task patients' brain activity and connectivity in left-hemispheric temporo-frontal regions were elevated. In the ToM task, activity in posterior cingulate cortex and temporo-parietal junction was reduced. We suggest that the high level of functioning in our patient is rather related to the effects in brain connectivity than to local cortical information processing and that subjective report provides a fruitful framework for interpretation.COVID-19 has significantly affected the use of health care worldwide and, consequently, admissions to hospital emergency services. The aim of this study is to describe the change of the activity of a Paediatric Emergency Service (PES) of a tertiary hospital during the pandemic. A retrospective cohort study with analysis of visits to the PES from March 30 to June 30, 2020, and comparison with homologous periods in the previous 3 years (2017-2019).A total of 53,883 episodes were analysed, with a median age of 5.8 years, and 53% were boys. In 2020, there was a 60% reduction in the number of admissions (p less then 0.001). There was a significant increase in referral by the public medical advice phone line of the National Health Service (NHS) (18.5% vs 5.4%) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) (5.1% vs 4.2%). Urgent patients decreased (31.2% vs 38.3%), and non-urgent patients increased (7.5% vs 1.7%). There was a significant reduction in school (0.4% vs 7.1%) and sports accidents (0.1% vs 1.2%) and an increase in other accidents (falls, wounds, burns, and dog bites) (12.
