Acupuncture has had promising results for treating climacteric-like symptoms induced by hormonal blockage, but there is no evidence of efficacy for controlling hot flashes. Materials and Methods This trial used acupuncture to treat the climacteric-like symptoms of patients with breast cancer, focusing on the mental, physical, and genitourinary symptoms and sleep disturbances, to determine the influence of acupuncture treatment. The randomized placebo-controlled trial, at a university-based cancer center, with blinded data collectors, compared an Acupuncture group (A), a Sham-Acupuncture group (S), and a Wait-List Control group (C). The patients were receiving tamoxifen. Group A had 10 weekly sessions of manual Acupuncture; Group S had 10 weekly sessions of Sham Acupuncture; and Group C spent 10 weeks on a Wait-List. The main outcome measures were the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Results Primary analysis revealed differences among the groups' improvements in scores for the 3 questionnaires (P  less then  0.001), The A group had significant improvements on the BDI-II (P  less then  0.001), PSQI (P  less then  0.002), and MRS (P  less then  0.004) compared to the S group in a post hoc analysis. Conclusions Acupuncture improved sleep, and mental and emotional distress symptoms induced by hormonal blockage in patients with breast cancer. A common surgical procedure, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a critical target for opioid reduction and development of enhanced recovery protocols. Auricular therapy can help reduce pain and opioid analgesic use in the perioperative timeperiod, but intraoperative use for TKA has yet to be explored. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of integrating intraoperative auricular therapy as part of an opioid-sparing protocol for TKA. Materials and Methods In this prospective cohort study, 41 patients undergoing primary unilateral TKA under neuraxial anesthesia received a standardized, opioid-free intraoperative protocol including electroauricular acupuncture. The primary outcome was the number of patients able to remain on a low-dose opioid regimen ≤112.5 oral morphine equivalents. Additional outcomes included patient-reported pain scores, side-effects, and prior experience with acupuncture. Methods Searches of 6 databases and previous reviews for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were performed. Each outcome was analyzed for participant conditions, interventions, controls, and follow-up times determined a priori. Active controls were excluded. Follow-up periods were based on Cochrane 5.1.0 guidelines. The results were tabulated and described narratively. Results In the 10 included RCTs (622 participants), 6 had a low risk of bias. For cryotherapy-induced pain, 1 trial showed significant pain reduction post treatment. For rheumatoid arthritis, 1 trial shown significant pain reduction and function improvements post treatment and short-term. For carpal tunnel syndrome, 1 trial showed significant pain reduction and functional improvements intermediate-term, while 3 trials suggested no significant difference. For tenosynovitis, 1 trial showed significant pain reduction and function improvements short-term. For poststroke impairments, 1 trial showed significant function improvements post treatment and at short-term, while another trial suggested no significant difference. No significant improvements were noted for trapezio-metacarpal joint osteoarthritis. In 2 trials, adverse effects occurred in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome; yet acupuncture appeared to be relatively safe. Conclusions Acupuncture may be effective and safe for short-term pain reduction and functional improvement in hand-and-wrist conditions. Clinicians should interpret the results with caution due to small sample sizes and clinical heterogeneity. Future research is warranted.Objective Acupuncture has gained popularity among patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the beneficial effect of acupuncture for improving IVF success is controversial and debatable. Given that different meta-analyses have come to different conclusions, it is crucial to explore the clinical trials in more detail. This literature review examined the limitation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the influence of acupuncture in IVF. Methods This review began with 844 studies. The inclusion criteria were studies that had acupuncture treatments in conjunction with IVF. After exclusion criteria were applied, the final number of peer-reviewed studies was 10. Results There were substantial variations in the results of the 10 RCTs. This seemed to suggest that acupuncture was not effective in conjunction with IVF treatment. However, limitations emerged that might explain these variations in results. Such limitations include timing of acupuncture and point selections; acupuncture not performed by experienced licensed acupuncturists; lack of Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnoses and fixed protocols causing biases; acupuncture dosages; and using sham acupuncture as a control. Conclusions There is an urgent need for further research into the effectiveness of acupuncture for improving IVF outcomes. This review provides insight into this complex and controversial topic, revealing limitations of the clinical trials that led to different conclusions. If future research can examine acupuncture treatment carefully to resemble real-world clinical practice-having appropriate controls and individualized acupuncture treatments-increasingly positive effects from acupuncture in IVF may be expected.Background and Objective Pain is a highly prevalent and distressing experience of hospitalized patients with cancer, and undertreatment is a challenging issue. Adding nonpharmacologic treatments such as acupuncture to conventional pain management may help address a patient's total pain experience. A dearth of acupuncture treatment guidelines exists, leaving individual practitioners to develop treatments themselves. The aim of the work described in this report was to develop a standardized clinical reference manual for East Asian Medicine (EAM) assessment, diagnosis, and acupuncture treatment of cancer-related pain in hospitalized patients with cancer. Design The acupuncture manual was developed based on (1) a narrative review of existing literature on acupuncture and cancer pain; (2) a review of acupuncture charting notes of more than 200 treatments provided in an inpatient setting; and (3) meetings of an expert panel of senior acupuncturists to reach consensus on a manual protocol. Results The resulting manual described diagnosis of patients based on EAM constitution, symptoms and signs, and channel location of the cancer-related pain symptoms. The resulting point selections for acupuncture treatment enables adaptability, reproducibility, and individualized acupuncture treatment of cancer-related pain in hospitalized patients with cancer. Conclusions The manual fills a vital gap in the current literature, and supports community- and hospital-based acupuncturists as a standardized clinical reference. The manual provides guidance for cancer-related pain management, using EAM acupuncture in hospitalized patients.Objective Guyana is located on the north coast of the South American continent and is a middle-income developing country in the Caribbean. There is little educational opportunity for individuals interested in medical acupuncture. The aim of this project was to develop an introductory medical acupuncture curriculum for perioperative use. Materials and Methods Through a carefully coordinated teaching-and-care plan, with support from physicians and various medical organizations, an educational opportunity in medical acupuncture was established at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, a medical university teaching hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. The project involved development of a medical acupuncture curriculum, as well as teaching and patient care. Anesthesia staff members, resident trainees, and perioperative and pain-clinic patients participated. Results Medical acupuncture-trained physicians were able to provide medical acupuncture education and services in a third-world country because of this project. Conclusion This project is an ideal example of utilizing medical acupuncture for promoting global heath.Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis is a rare benign abnormality seen in the pediatric population. Diagnosed by scrotal ultrasonography, this lesion is often associated with congenital renal tract anomalies, most commonly ipsilateral renal agenesis or multicystic dysplastic kidney. Treatment traditionally involves orchiectomy or testicular sparing surgery; however, conservative treatment with surveillance has been used as an appropriate alternative. We present the case of a 5-year-old boy with cystic dysplasia of the rete testis with associated unilateral renal agenesis.We described in this article a 19-year-old girl with an intracranial hypertension as an initial presentation of neuropsychiatric lupus. The brain MRI showed diffuse, bilateral and symmetrical white and grey matter hyperintensities. These lesions completely disappeared after 3 months of treatment. Diffuse cerebral edema with or without leukoencephalopathy in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus is an extremely rare entity.
