This study aimed to identify characteristics of the triceps surae muscles and aponeuroses stiffness in vivo, during graded isometric submaximal plantarflexion efforts. A total of twelve healthy male subjects (age 27 ± 4 years) participated and were required to stay at rest (0% MVC) and perform isometric submaximal plantar flexion contractions (20%, 40%, 60% of MVC) on a dynamometer. Young's modulus of triceps surae muscles and the adjoining aponeuroses between gastrocnemii and soleus at the proximal and distal sites were obtained in the longitudinal direction (along muscle's line of action) during at rest and submaximal plantar flexions. Additionally, Young's modulus of adjoining aponeuroses in the transverse direction at the distal sites was also calculated. Young's modulus of LG (lateral gastrocnemius), SOL-lat (lateral part of soleus) and LPS (superficial aponeurosis of LG) at the proximal site showed significant (p less then 0.001) graded increase response to the submaximal contraction levels. Besides, in the lateral side, significant differences in the Young's modulus of aponeuroses were observed between longitudinal and transverse directions at rest and during contractions (p less then 0.002). Changes of aponeuroses length were significantly correlated with Young's modulus changes of the proximal gastrocnemii muscle bellies (r = 0.43-0.45, p = 0.006-0.008) and superficial aponeuroses (r = 0.49-0.60, p less then 0.002). The results further indicate that the triceps surae muscles and aponeuroses showed inhomogeneous and anisotropic mechanical properties during submaximal muscle contractions, and the stiffening effect of muscle belly possibly make influence on the mechanical properties of aponeuroses during muscle contractions, especially for the lateral gastrocnemius.
Women should be evaluated for breast cancer risk by age 30 to assess for screening need. Recent trends in breast cancer in this population may further inform recommendations.
The aim of this study was to analyze trends over time in the rate of breast cancer, tumor characteristics and treatment in women under age 40.
Retrospective cohort study of women under age 40 at our institution diagnosed with breast cancer from January 2007 to April 2018 was conducted. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics and treatment outcomes were collected. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Kendell Trend test were calculated. Two-proportion z-tests were used to compare proportions of stage, pathology and treatment between 2007-2013 and 2014-2018.
197 women under age 40 were treated for a new diagnosis of breast cancer at our institution. A higher proportion of women were diagnosed with invasive carcinoma in 2013-2018 (91%) compared to 2007-2012 (78%), p=0.008. A higher proportion of women were diagnosed with advanced stage disease (stage III-IV) in 2013-2018 (24%) compared to 2007-2012 (2%), p=0.001. No statistically significant evidence for an increasing trend of overall rate of breast cancer over the last 11years (p=0.419) was observed.
While no statistically significant increase in overall rate of breast cancer was noted, an increase in invasive and later staged breast cancers was observed.
Rise in more aggressive cancers in a population that is largely not screened may have implications both on the individual young woman's morbidity as well as on a public health level.

We report two cases of CG with new presentation in terms of histopathology and location a case of CG with osseous metaplasia evident on imaging, and another CG, unusually located in the posterior portion of the third ventricle.Although delivery of neural stem cell (NSC) as a therapeutic treatment for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) provides promise, NSC delivery typically has extremely low survival rates. Here, we investigate endothelial cell (EC) and pericyte (PC) interactions with NSC, where our results demonstrate that EC, and not PC, promote NSC cell proliferation and reduce cytotoxicity under glucose deprivation (GD). Additionally, NSC proliferation was increased upon treatment with EC conditioned media, inhibited with antagonism of VEGFR3. In an NSC + EC co-culture we detected elevated levels of VEGF-C, not seen for NSC cultured alone. Exogenous VEGF-C induced NSC upregulation of VEGFR3, promoted proliferation, and reduced cytotoxicity. Finally, we delivered microbeads containing NSC + EC into a murine ICH cavity, where VEGF-C was increasingly present in the injury site, not seen upon delivery NSC encapsulated alone. These studies demonstrate that EC-secreted VEGF-C may promote NSC survival during injury, enhancing the potential for cell delivery therapies for stroke. The health effects of PM2.5 associated heavy metals have caused wide public concern. To more accurately assess source-specific health risks of PM2.5-bound heavy metals, and to formulate a cost-effective control strategy to health risk reduction, it is necessary to have a better understanding of the temporal variation of source-specific health risks. For this purpose, hourly PM2.5 and associated heavy metals were measured during four seasons in 2018-2019 in a Chinese megacity. A method integrating positive matrix factorization (PMF) with the health risk assessment model was used to quantify the source-specific health risks. Results showed that the total hazard index (HI) of PM2.5-bound heavy metals was 1.35, higher than the safety level, the sum cancer risks (R) of carcinogenic elements (Cr, Co, Ni and As) were 2.8 × 10-5, implying nonnegligible risks. Industrial source 1 (61.3%), which was related with Mn posed the largest non-cancer risk, while coal combustion (36.1%) and industrial source 1 (34.9%) posed most of the cancer risk, and slightly fluctuated with seasons. Health risks of most resolved sources were higher in autumn and winter than in other seasons. In terms of the diurnal variation, they were the lowest in the afternoon. Besides, the health risks of vehicle source had a peak value in rush hours. Different scenarios were simulated to understand the influences of time resolutions and sampling periods on source-specific risk assessment. The results showed the cancer risks of coal combustion and industrial source 1 calculated from the dataset with reduced sampling periods were different from those calculated from the whole dataset. We conclude that source-specific health risks of heavy metals show seasonal and diurnal variations, which suggests that targeted strategies should be adopted on the basis of seasonal and diurnal cycles to protect public health. In addition, a sufficient sampling period is required to generate representative and reliable results for source-specific health risk assessment.Nonylphenol (NP) is a representative environmental endocrine-disrupting compound that can induce oxidative stress in organisms. The Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway acts an important role in preventing oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of oxidative stress caused by NP on Keap1-Nrf2 pathway in rats. Rats were treated with NP (30, 90, 270 mg/kg) for different exposure time (7, 14 and 28 days). The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in serum and glutathione S-transferase (GST), UDP-Glucuronosyl Transferase (UGT) in liver were detected by ELISA kits. Western blot was used to detect Keap1, Nrf2 protein expression in liver and cerebral cortex. The results showed that 28 days of NP exposure significantly increased ROS levels in NPH group. And 14 days exposure to NP significantly enhanced the levels of GST and UGT, while 28 days of exposure showed a suppressive effect. In liver, Keap1 levels was upregulated at 7, 14 and 28 days of NP exposure, while nuclear Nrf2 levels decreased at 7 and 28 days but increased at 14 days. LY3009120 concentration In cerebral cortex, Keap1 and Nrf2 expression increased at 14 days but decreased at 28 days. Besides, with the prolongation of NP exposure time, the GST and UGT levels in NPM and NPH groups were increased firstly and then decreased, while Keap1 and Nrf2 protein levels were constantly decreased in liver and cerebral cortex. In conclusion, the lower dose and shorter exposure time of NP activated the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway that may reduce the damage of oxidative stress, but when further exposed to NP at higher dose and time, the pathway could be inhibited.Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone malignancy in children and adolescents which has the survival rate of 20% in its advanced stages. Osteosarcomas are mostly resistance to our common treatments. DNA damage response (DDR) is a specialized multistep process containing abundant proteins which are necessary for the survival of any cell and organism. DDR machinery detects a diversity of DNA lesions and inhibits the cell cycle progression if these lesions are not repairable. DDR is involved in aging, age-related diseases, and cancer. In recent years, DDR inhibitors have gained the attention of researches due to their potentials in offering novel therapeutic targets and improving the response of many cancers to either chemo- or radio-therapy. In this regard, we tried to gather a great body of evidence about the role of DDR ingredients in osteosarcoma's initiation/progression, prognosis, and treatment.Despite the relevance of road crashes and their impact on social and health care costs, the effects of extreme temperatures on road crashes risk have been scarcely investigated, particularly for those occurring in occupational activities. A nationwide epidemiological study was carried out to estimate the risk of general indistinct and work-related road crashes related with extreme temperatures and to identify crash and occupation parameters mostly involved. Data about road crashes, resulting in death or injury, occurring during years 2013-2015 in Italy, were collected from the National Institute of Statistics, for general indistinct road crashes, and from the compensation claim applications registered by the national workers' compensation authority, for work-related ones. Time series of hourly temperature were derived from the results provided by the meteorological model WRF applied at a national domain with 5 km resolution. To consider the different spatial-temporal characteristics of the two road crashes araccident (urban vs out of town), presence of crossroads, as well as occupational factors like the use of a vehicle on duty were all found to produce higher risks of road crashes during extreme temperatures. Mitigation and prevention measures are needed to limit social and health care costs. Many researchers have developed predictive models of crashes based on the safety scores of commercial truck companies, but these studies have been based on aggregated data at the truck company level-evaluating the total crashes and violations per company over a period of time. This level of aggregation obscures critical information. Here, a new approach to organizing non-aggregated data is taken, and logistic regression and random forest models are applied to non-aggregated FMCSA roadside inspection, violation, and crash data at the specific vehicle level. Resampling methods are used to improve model performance where there are relatively few events of interest-crashes. These results point not to specific "unsafe" drivers, but rather, patterns of unsafe behaviors or conditions that predict roadway crashes. Working toward reducing these behaviors systematically could save lives on US highways.
