The Most Common Mistakes People Make Using Repair Car Keys
How to Repair Car Keys

The car keys are small and may not be considered important, but they are essential for the proper operation of your vehicle. The cost of replacing an old or modern transponder car key can range from $200 to upwards of $200.

However, there are ways to fix your car keys at home with only a fraction of the cost. This article will cover some of the most common car keys issues and the DIY solutions.

Dead Key Fob Battery

Cars come with remote key fobs that allows opening the doors, trunk and tailgate more convenient than ever before. However, car keys repairs in this device can die. There are, however, a few tricks that can be used to fix this issue in a pinch.

First, check if the car is still in ignition mode. If it is, then the battery on the key fob could simply be low instead of dead. To test this, press the button on the key fob straight towards the ignition button. If it works, then the battery is probably fine and only needs to be replaced.

To replace the fob's battery, begin by prying the case off using a screwdriver or watch-type tool. Do not apply too much force, as this could cause the fob's casing to split. If the fob isn't opening try prying the tool several times around the outside of the case.

Open the electronic portion of your vehicle after you have removed the mechanical key. Install the new battery and snap it back into the shell. If the key fob doesn't work after this, it may be a larger problem with the remote start system in your car. This requires an expert to identify. If this is the case, a trusted mechanic should be able help you. If you need help with your car or vehicle, you can get roadside assistance.

Broken Key Ring

There are a few options you can do in the event that your key fob won't function because the ring is broken. Look to see if can locate the broken piece within the ignition. If it's still there the ignition, take it out without damaging either the ignition lock or the door lock. If you have trouble taking it off, call a locksmith for help. They have special tools to safely remove a broken key from the ignition.

A broken car key could be caused by corrosion on the plastic frame or circuit board. You can clean the circuit board by using a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol. This will remove corrosion and ensure that the contact pads don't get damaged.

If your key won't start because the ring is broken, you may be able to repair it by using a thick wire or nail to close the hole. Superglue can also be used to fix a broken ring. After cleaning the ring using a damp cloth, apply a small amount superglue on each end of the wire or nail. Press the pieces together and let them dry before using your vehicle. These DIY solutions may sound appealing, however they are only temporary solutions. It's best to hire an expert locksmith for repairs that last. They have the tools and knowledge to repair a damaged car key quickly and efficiently. They can even replace the battery on your key fob, and change it's programming if required.

Broken Key Blade

Some key blades can break due to a lot of wear and tear. If this happens, it's probably time to get a new key. Fortunately, this issue isn't as serious as it may appear at first. The main problem is that the blade has broken off from the case.

Spraying lubricant into the keyhole is one solution to repair it. Then, you can use pliers, pins, or tweezers to grasp the damaged key and take it out. You can also use a magnet if the key is magnetic. Be cautious not to use a magnetic tool on an ignition key since it could cause the tumbler of the lock to break.

If you're unable to get the broken piece of the key, contact an expert locksmith immediately. They're equipped with special tools that let them safely remove keys without causing further damage.

You can also apply super glue to fix a snapped key. Apply a small amount of glue to the edges of the break and press them together. Wait until the glue is dry before inserting the key into the lock. This method isn't secure and you may need repeat the process several times before it works. Plus the super glue might not be enough to hold the key together. This is more of a temporary solution rather than a permanent one.

Broken Plastic Loop

If your key fob's plastic loop breaks off, it can make the key useless. This is a relatively easy fix. You can use thick wire or a nail for finishing to replace it. For each end of the wire or nail make two holes in the loop of plastic. Cut the wire or nail to key width, then place a small drop of superglue in each hole. Put the nail or wire into the holes to seal them and let it dry.

A locksmith who sells replacement shells is a different option. They can remove the programmable part of your key, then transfer it to the new shell and cut a new blade for much less than the full replacement cost.

It's not the most ideal solution, but it'll bring you back on the road if your key broke in half. It's difficult to repair when the blade of the key is in the ignition, however. You could try using hair clips or a needle extractor tool to pull the broken part of the ignition, but this is risky if you're not careful. Call a locksmith with special tools to safely remove broken keys from ignitions. They can also make you new keys that have the correct cuts for the ignition of your vehicle to ensure that it functions properly when it is inserted into the lock.

Broken Master Key

You'll need to try at regaining the key before it's completely destroyed. You can employ lubricants, tweezers, and needle nose pliers to grasp the fragment of a broken key.

To start, spray the inside of your lock with a lubricant like WD-40 or graphite powder. You can also try the hacksaw blade method that involves carefully moving the blade down the side of the broken key and hooking onto some of the 'teeth'. If you succeed in doing this, you should be able remove the broken key from the lock.

Many hardware stores offer tools for key extraction that spiral. This has a thin flexible bar with spiral threads that can be inserted into the keyway and then bent to dig into the damaged section of the key. Once it has gotten caught on the serrations, you can turn the bar around and pull it against the broken part of the key.

Before contacting a locksmith, try to get rid of the broken master key before calling a locksmith. If you're unable to remove the broken piece, you'll need to contact a professional locksmith. A locksmith can make you a new key that will be programmed to the transponder of your car.
