How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Extreme cold or extreme heat can sometimes cause the car to stop functioning. Try waiting a little while before you decide to replace it.

When your car keys break it's a huge problem. And it always occurs at the worst timing! You can repair a broken key without the need to purchase a new one.

Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs allow us to open doors, trunks and tailgates, without having to search to find a physical key. Some key fobs even have a built-in key that can be used to start our cars. These fobs are powered by a small battery. If the battery dies then the key fob will not be able to transmit the signal needed to start the vehicle. There are many ways to fix a dead car key fob.

First, check the condition of the key fob to determine if it's actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you will require replacing the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it apart. Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you could damage the fob. It is also essential to make sure you are replacing the correct battery type. Certain models may require a different battery. You can determine what kind of battery your car requires by consulting the owner's manual, or you can visit an Interstate All Battery Center and have a battery specialist help you.

If the key fob isn't dead, you can revive it by bringing it closer to your vehicle. Since the majority of key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only function at a limited distance and must be near enough to allow the ignition system to detect the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it by moving a couple of inches closer.

Many automobile manufacturers have backup systems that is activated when the battery on the key fob is low. For instance, many Ford models have a dedicated slot for the key fob which will start the engine when properly inserted. Go through the owner's manual to find details on how to locate the slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're unable to start your car using this method, make sure to contact roadside assistance for assistance.

Broken Key Ring

The chip in the key fob is what communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system to begin the engine. The chip could be damaged or there could be programming mistakes. If this happens your key fob will not be able transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't begin. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and wear and tear on the contact pads.

There are a lot of warning indicators on your dashboard if keys are not communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include errors, flashing lights or the key not locking the vehicle. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact your local locksmith right away to repair your key fob or replacement.

If you have a lot of keys, it's easy to scratch your key ring. This could cause the key fob to split in half this is one of the most frequent causes of car keys breaking. If this happens, try using super glue to repair it by applying a small amount the glue to both sides of the crack and then gently pressing them together. It is essential to apply a gel-type adhesive that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.

If this method does not work, it is important to get in touch with a professional locksmith as soon as possible in order to prevent further damage to your car. A locksmith who is certified will be able to replace or repair your key fob in a short time, and they will be able to ensure that the ignition lock and door lock are not affected during the process.

If your key fob is damaged, it can be frustrating and inconvenient. However, it's not a reason to panic or become frustrated. Instead you can take proactive steps to minimize the chance of your key fob breaking again in the future, such as regular maintenance by using key protectors and keeping an extra key. Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the small key ring at the top, which is where it joins the keyfob. It's made of soft metal or plastic. I've made a hole in it, and wet-sanded it to make it stronger however, I'm assuming that the issue isn't solved by this.

I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring using clear tape, but it didn't work as good. It's a shame because I use the little split rings to keep my keys in the right place.

If the case for the key fob is damaged it is usually possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are online kits available for this, but they usually only offer an interim fix. It might be better to bring it to a professional who will swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. Alternately, you may be able to find an alternative case at an home improvement store or a locksmith. They're not as expensive as an entirely new key fob.
