Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A lightweight double pushchair is easy to get around, particularly when you have children of various ages. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and over steps.
This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also has adjustable reclining, UPF 50+ canopy and peekaboo windows. It also comes with a frame that expands in width to accommodate an additional car seat or an additional passenger.
Side-by-Side
The majority of the light double pushchairs that we tested were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can stand up without assistance, as they tend to lack car seat compatibility. That said they do have a few advantages. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both great options that provide adjustable recline in both seats, a large canopy and padded 5-point harnesses. They're also easy to maneuver despite their larger footprints and are great for parents who are worried about fitting through doors.
The Cybex Duet is a little different because its clever frame extends its width to create a second seat, which makes it lighter than the majority of other pushchairs that are side-by-side available. It is able to fit through standard doors and is easy to maneuver in public transport. It can also be used as a jogger, which is ideal if you plan to use it with an infant car seat or baby carrier.
The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another excellent lightweight side-by-side double. It offers additional flexibility due to the modular frame. It features a clever design that allows you to transform it into a single stroller or a double with the addition of 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even accommodate twins). It's a great option for families that are growing and the UPPAbaby is among the tiniest and most fashionable umbrella strollers available.
Try the egg2 that folds down to the size and weight of a compact suitcase. It can be used either as a single or double by adding two baby car seats or carrycots. Our home testers were impressed with the ease of maneuver even with a full load of children.
Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't foolproof, though -If your children are of the same age or at the same stage, they might still argue over who rides in which seat. And if they're different heights it could be that a tandem design might be better for them as it allows them to face each other.
Tandem
While side-by-side models may be better suited for siblings who are the same age tandem pushchairs that are lightweight have their own charms. Some can fit a larger car seat and some have seats that can be reversible. Others have an additional carrycot or reclined seat that can be flipped in the middle. They are more spacious and easy to get into and out of. However the baskets they use tend to be smaller than those found on single buggies. Many feature larger canopies with windows that peek out and padding for the leg cushions.
The iCandy Peach is another example of a lightweight and affordable tandem. The fabric is a bit less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. However, double travel stroller looks fantastic and is simple to use. Its one-handed folding is awe-inspiring. Even though it requires some practice, Kirstie from our Lab called it "genius". The carrycot cannot be folded when it is attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is simple and quick.
Tandem lightweight double pushchairs will typically make tighter turns than side-byside models, however, they can be more challenging to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. They are also slower to accelerate and heavier to move. This can put strain on your back.
Another alternative is a convertible double buggy, which starts off as one-person, but you can add adapters to make it into a double. These can include a second seat or carrycot in the front, or the children can be seated side-byside. Some can also consider including a buggyboard, which helps an older child keep pace with siblings who are younger.
compact double stroller is a excellent example of a convertible as it can also convert into a twin pram through the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that create a lie-flat space for infants. These can be placed in a row or joined to face each other and you can also use them in conjunction with the baby car seat that is included with the pushchair (as as long as you choose a compatible one). Since they are made of high-quality materials, these types of buggies that are dual-use can be used for many years without displaying much wear, which means they have a high resale value.
Single-to-Double
This lightweight double buggy was designed for outdoor-loving family who would like to upgrade from a single-stroller. It can be converted into a jogger with kits that include air-filled tires and all-wheel-suspension. It also handles rough terrain well and it's a tandem triple that is suitable for twins or children of various age groups. It's a great option for parents who want a sleek design as elegant as a single. It comes in different fabric colours.
This iCandy model is incredibly easy to fold with a one-handed system. It's heavier than other single-to-double pushchairs, but our home test Karolina says it's capable of maneuvering even with two toddlers inside and the carrycot.
You can buy add-ons such as the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) which are great for babies. Our test panel found that the seats to be comfortable for toddlers, with good headrests and lumbar support. There are many options for reclining the seats, with the front seat can be adjusted to different positions, and the back seat having a reclining option.
The biggest drawback with this kind of buggy is that it is generally larger overall than doubles that are side-by-side, which makes it harder to maneuver through doorways, and is difficult to maneuver around kerbs. However the suspension and wheels are generally able to do a good job of dealing with pavements and the fact that they're usually significantly lighter than the side-bysides means that you still have plenty of storage space. It's important to remember that these strollers aren't as efficient in getting through narrow aisles in supermarkets and aren't able to cope with a lot of shopping. It's easier to turn them around even on the smallest of curving paths however, even this can be a challenge. Some are easier to turn than others, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.
Convertible
Convertible double pushchairs are fantastic because they can be adapted to the changing requirements of a family. Most of the time, they begin as single buggies and have adapters that allow you to include a second child's seat, a carrycot, or (in some cases) an automobile seat to the frame. Some can be converted to a single when your child's older age begins to walk or prefers to ride buggyboards.
One of the lightest double strollers on our list, this fashionable tri-fold model can carry children up to 40 lbs each and features a convenient basket that can be placed between the seats for storage. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining seats and a front and back suspension for smoother rides on rough terrain were appreciated by the home testers. It also comes with a convenient parent cup holder, and an ample, easily accessible basket. However, they noted that the seats' backs have pockets that aren't large enough to hold more than a cell phone and keys.
This premium, lightweight side-by-side can be used in more than 20 different configurations and comes with two seats and a carrycot. It has a high-profile steering handlebar, front and rear suspensions to smooth out rough terrain and a compact fold that can be folded up with straps that make it easy to transport, and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks as well as 10-inch back wheels that have suspensions for an easier ride. The only drawback is that you'll have to purchase a separate baby carrier or car seat.
This multi-functional tandem is the top choice of our home testers due to the fact that it is easy to maneuver and has a large shopping basket that can be accessed from both seats when in the parent-facing position. Its surprisingly light weight (about the same as some single pushchairs) makes it a breeze to move. Reversible seats mean you can switch them around to face either way, and the clever method by which it can attach an additional seat or riding board to the rear is highly praised by many. Parents also liked the fact that it can accommodate infant car seats and carriers from a variety of brands, including some which aren't usually fit into other double buggies.
