Interestingly, the electrochemical performance of the modified LFP/C was not adversely affected by the presence of the trifluoromethylphenyl groups on the carbon surface. The chemical relithiation of the grafted samples was carried out using LiI as the reducing agent and the lithium source in order to obtain fully lithiated grafted powders.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds that are widely distributed in the air, water, and soil. Recently, the amount of PAHs derived from fuels and from incomplete combustion processes is increasing. In the aquatic environment, oil spills directly cause PAH pollution and affect marine organisms. Oil spills correlate very well with the major shipping routes. Furthermore, accidental oil spills can seriously impact the marine environment toxicologically. Here, we describe PAH toxicities and related bioaccumulation properties in aquatic animals, including invertebrates. Recent studies have revealed the toxicity of PAHs, including endocrine disruption and tissue-specific toxicity, although researchers have mainly focused on the carcinogenic toxicity of PAHs. We summarize the toxicity of PAHs regarding these aspects. Additionally, the bioaccumulation properties of PAHs for organisms, including invertebrates, are important factors when considering PAH toxicity. In this review, we describe the bioaccumulation properties of PAHs in aquatic animals. Recently, microplastics have been the most concerning environmental problem in the aquatic ecosystem, and the vector effect of microplastics for lipophilic compounds is an emerging environmental issue. Here, we describe the correlation between PAHs and microplastics. Thus, we concluded that PAHs have a toxicity for aquatic animals, indicating that we should emphasize the prevention of aquatic PAH pollution.Steroidogenic Factor 1 (SF-1/NR5A1), an orphan nuclear receptor, is important for sexual differentiation and the development of multiple endocrine organs, as well as cell proliferation in cancer cells. Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) is a transcriptional repressor, and its expression is rapidly induced by DNA damage and oncogenic stimuli. Since both NR5A1 and ATF3 can regulate and cooperate with several transcription factors, we hypothesized that NR5A1 may interact with ATF3 and plays a functional role in cancer development. First, we found that NR5A1 physically interacts with ATF3. We further demonstrated that ATF3 expression is up-regulated by NR5A1. Moreover, the promoter activity of the ATF3 is activated by NR5A1 in a dose-dependent manner in several cell lines. By mapping the ATF3 promoter as well as the site-directed mutagenesis analysis, we provide evidence that NR5A1 response elements (-695 bp and -665 bp) are required for ATF3 expression by NR5A1. It is well known that the transcriptional activities of NR5A1 are modulated by post-translational modifications, such as small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) modification and phosphorylation. Notably, we found that both SUMOylation and phosphorylation of NR5A1 play roles, at least in part, for NR5A1-mediated ATF3 expression. Overall, our results provide the first evidence of a novel relationship between NR5A1 and ATF3.Elemental (total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN)) and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions (δ13C and δ15N, respectively) in the surface sediment of Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) in spring and summer were measured to study the spatial and seasonal changes of organic matter (OM) and assess the human-induced and environment-induced changes in the area. Gefitinib manufacturer The OM in the surface sediment of ZJB was a mixture of terrestrial and marine sources, and was dominated by marine OM (54.9% ± 15.2%). Compared to the central ZJB, the channel and coastal ZJB areas had higher δ13C and δ15N values, higher TOC and TN concentrations, and lower TOC/TN ratios, indicating higher primary productivity and higher percentages of marine OM in the latter two subregions. Mariculture activities, sewage inputs, and dredging were responsible for these phenomena. Clear seasonal variations in OM were observed in ZJB. The average proportions of terrestrial OM in summer increased by 10.2% in the ZJB channel and 26.0% in the coastal ZJB area compared with those in spring. Heavy rainfall brought a large amount of terrestrial OM into the channel and coastal ZJB areas, leading to the increase of the terrestrial OM fraction in these two subregions in summer. In summary, anthropogenic influences had a significant influence on the spatial and seasonal variations of sedimentary OM in ZJB.Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, is caused by a reduction in salivary secretion and by changes in the composition of saliva associated with the malfunction of salivary glands. Xerostomia decreases quality of life. In the present study, we investigated the effects of peptides derived from β-lactoglobulin C on age-dependent atrophy, gene expression profiles, and the dysfunction of salivary glands. Long-term oral administration of Leu57-Leu58-His59-Lys60 (LLHK), Leu58-His59-Lys60 (LHK) and His59-Lys60 (HK) peptides induced salivary secretion and prevented and/or reversed the age-dependent atrophy of salivary glands in older rats. The transcripts of 78 genes were upregulated and those of 81 genes were downregulated by more than 2.0-fold (p ≤ 0.05) after LHK treatment. LHK upregulated major salivary protein genes such as proline-rich proteins (Prpmp5, Prb3, Prp2, Prb1, Prp15), cystatins (Cst5, Cyss, Vegp2), amylases (Amy1a, Amy2a3), and lysozyme (Lyzl1), suggesting that LLHK, LHK, and HK restored normal salivary function. The AP-2 transcription factor gene (Tcfap2b) was also induced significantly by LHK treatment. These results suggest that LLHK, LHK, and HK-administration may prevent and/or reverse the age-dependent atrophy and functional decline of salivary glands by affecting gene expression.Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have important roles in the aging process, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other brain disorders. Amyloid beta protein (Aβ) is the main component of amyloid plaques in the brains of people with AD. Several studies suggest that Aβ increases the generation of free radicals in neurons, which leads to oxidative damage and cell death. Aβ can also induce neuroinflammation by increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes. Walnuts contain several components that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Animal and human studies from our and other groups suggest that supplementation with walnuts in the diet may improve cognition and reduce the risk and/or progression of MCI and AD. In the transgenic AD mouse model (AD-tg), we have reported the beneficial effects of a diet with walnuts on memory, learning, motor coordination, anxiety, and locomotor activity. Human clinical trials have also suggested an association of walnut consumption with better cognitive performance and improvement in memory when compared to baseline in adults.
