Car Remote Key Repair
Modern car remotes are useful and convenient, but can be frustrating when they stop functioning. There are some quick solutions to get them working again.
Replace the battery first. The majority of fobs are powered with lithium coin cells. These are cheap and easy to locate.
Broken Electronics
Your remote car key has an internal electronic circuit board that transmits and interprets signals to your car. If this board is damaged the key fob will not work correctly. Damage to the receiver or transmitter will require an auto-locksmith professional or your car dealer.
The majority of remote key fobs utilize lithium ion coin batteries, that have a long shelf life but will not last for long. The change of the batteries is likely to solve your issue, especially those who have had them for a while. You might be shocked if you've been using your remote for some time and the buttons aren't responding in any way. This can happen even when the batteries are brand new. The buttons on your keyfob will be subjected to a lot of bouncing and may break or become inactive with time. In this instance, removing and cleaning the buttons is usually enough to solve the issue.
If the buttons on your remote don't respond, you may require reprogramming it to match your car's system. This is typically accomplished by pressing the ignition key multiple times while the doors are shut. This will depend on the model and make of your vehicle, however you can find instructions online or seek professional help.
If the key fob is made of plastic you can remove the cover by prying it apart. Be careful not to scratch any buttons or internal components. This is best done with a pair needle-nosed pliers that have longer tips. They are able to grasp small components. Lubricating the pliers using super glue, melted tallow or putty can help them grip delicate components. This is something an automotive locksmith can perform, since the wrong methods could cause damage to the electronic components. The plastic may break when you attempt to take the fob apart with force. It's also possible that any buttons connected to it could be ripped off accidentally if forcefully pull it apart.
Faulty Transponder Chip
Transponder chips can fail if you've previously been able to start the vehicle using the remote key, but are unable to do so again. This is because the key relies on a small electronic component in order to communicate with immobilizer system. It signals the system that your key is valid and that you are able to start the engine. If the chip does not properly transmit this message, the immobilizer is disabled for your vehicle.
This issue is more prevalent in older cars, however it can also be found in newer vehicles. The transponder chip wears down over time. The chip can be repaired by a car locksmith however, it can be costly.
In certain cases, the chip in your key might be dead. If this is the case, it will need to be replaced by an auto dealer. This is the most expensive option however, it is often required to get your car back on the road.
The other possibility is that the chip inside your key has become corrupted, which means it no longer communicates properly with the immobilizer system. This can occur when the battery is replaced or it can occur in the event of physical damage to the key. A Mesa car locksmith can sometimes fix this, but it might be necessary to go to the dealership for your key programmed once more.
If you're having issues with your remote key, you should first attempt to backup your device. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can take apart your key fob and examine it visually. Make sure all buttons appear to be damaged or loose. These parts see frequent use and may be lost over time. If they are loose it is a good idea to have them reattached by a professional. This is often a way to make your key fob. This is particularly true for keys that were accidentally put into the wrong ignition lock.
Damaged Battery
If you've tried a brand new battery but the key fob is still unable to work, there could be other issues. Fobs can be damaged by water, dropping them, or stepping on them, and the internal connections, like the ones that connect the battery terminals in the remote, may be damaged or disconnected. It's possible that you need to change the programming of the key fob, and this may be something you can tackle by yourself if have a spare fob from the same model and manufacturer.
Modern key fobs must be programmed to work with your car and ensure that only you are able to unlock the car doors. This is an essential step to secure your vehicle and prevent other people from using your key fob to gain access to your car or cause electrical system problems. Certain engine error codes, or even normal wear-and-tear can corrupt the programming and prevent your key fob from functioning. Professionals with the right equipment can reprogram your key fob correctly.
It's also possible that the problem is with the buttons themselves and this could be a less complicated fix than replacing the entire key fob. Key fobs typically have rubberized buttons that are tossed around constantly and could break or get loose. If you are able to see that the buttons aren't damaged you could try adjusting them manually.
Open the key fob to inspect it, but take care. Certain fobs do not have an easy release mechanism, which means you may need a screwdriver or other tool to pry them apart. Some are sealed and can't be opened at all without special tools, so you'll likely have to bring it to a dealer to have it opened professionally. If you have an extra key fob from the same model and make you want to use it, try using it to access the programming mode of your car. Depending on the car you drive this could mean closing and locking the doors, switching lights and other electronics off and on and pressing a certain set of buttons in a certain order.
Failing Buttons
If your key fob has buttons that do not work or need to be press very hard to function, it could be because of mechanical damage. The key fob being dropped on concrete or accidentally hitting a button with a sharp object can alter the way it functions. You'll have to dismantle the key fob and carefully examine it to see whether there are any buttons that appear to be broken. If this is the case, a locksmith could fix it.
Dirt or crud can also cause buttons to fail. You should clean your key fob using the help of a cotton swab which has been submerged in alcohol. It is also possible to clean the surfaces of the keys. company website is also important to determine if the issue lies related to your car lock or the key fob. If you don't have a spare key, try the keys in another vehicle to see if it works.
The condition of the battery will also determine if you should reprogram the key fob. If the key fob you have is not able to work after replacing the batteries, the terminal contacts of the battery are likely damaged. You can also reset your electric key fob by pressing the buttons too frequently when you are not in range, or by disconnecting your car's battery.
If your key fob still does not work after replacing the battery you should have it reprogrammed to your car. This will depend on the type of vehicle, but generally, you'll need to manually lock and unlock the doors of your car, insert the key fob into the ignition, turn it to the accessory position and push the button on the remote. If this is working, the exterior and/or interior lights should light up. You can retest the key fob to confirm that it has been successfully programmed. In less rare cases the key fob may stop working if there is an issue with the door locks themselves.
