In the present study, an array high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) elastography method based on ultrafast ultrasound imaging was proposed for estimating the viscoelastic properties of porcine cornea.

The elastic wave was generated by an external vibrator, after which the wave propagation image was obtained using a 40-MHz array transducer. Viscoelasticity estimation was performed by fitting the phase velocity curve using the Lamb wave model. The performance of the proposed HFUS elastography system was verified using 2-mm-thick thin-layer gelatin phantoms with gelatin concentrations of 7% and 12%. Ex vivo experiments were carrie the standard value obtained in the phantom study when the Lamb wave model was used for elasticity measurement. However, the error between the standard elasticity values and the elasticity values estimated using group shear wave velocity was large. In the ex vivo eyeball experiments, the estimated elasticities and viscosities were respectively 9.1 ± 1.3 kPa and 0.5 ± 0.10 Pas for a healthy cornea and respectively 15.9 ± 2.1 kPa and 1.1 ± 0.12 Pas for a cornea with artificial sclerosis. A 3D HFUS elastography was also obtained for distinguishing the region of sclerosis in the cornea. We used eight geographically and genetically divergent populations of the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus to test whether northern populations have greater tolerance to low salinity stresses, as they experience greater precipitation and less evaporation. We used a common-garden experiment approach and exposed all populations to acute low (1 and 3 ppt) and high (110 and 130 ppt) salinities for 24 h and to a fluctuation between baseline salinity and moderate low (7 ppt) and high (80 ppt) salinities for over 49 h. We also performed RNA sequencing at several time points during the fluctuation between baseline and salinity of 7 ppt to understand the molecular basis of divergence between two populations with differing physiological responses. We present these novel findings (1) acute low salinity conditions caused more deaths than high salinity; (2) molecular processes that elevate proline levels increased in salinity of 7 ppt, which contrasts with other physiological studies in T. californicus that mainly associated accumulation of proline with hyperosmotic stress; and (3) tolerance to a salinity fluctuation did not follow a latitudinal trend but was instead governed by a complex interplay of factors, including population and duration of salinity stress. This highlights the importance of including a wider variety of environmental conditions in empirical studies to understand local adaptation.We examined what pedestrians look at when walking through a parking garage. Thirty-six participants walked a short route in a parking garage while their eye movements and head rotations were recorded with a Tobii Pro Glasses 2 eye-tracker. The participants' fixations were then classified into 14 areas of interest. The results showed that pedestrians often looked at the back (20.0%), side (7.5%), and front (4.2%) of parked cars, and at approaching cars (8.8%). Much attention was also paid to the ground (20.1%). The wheels of cars (6.8%) and the driver in approaching cars (3.2%) received attention as well. In conclusion, this study showed that eye movements are largely functional in the sense that they appear to assist in safe navigation through the parking garage. Pedestrians look at a variety of sides and features of the car, suggesting that displays on future automated cars should be omnidirectionally visible. Practitioner summary This study measured where pedestrians look when walking through a parking garage. It was found that the back, side, and wheels of cars attract considerable attention. This knowledge may be important for the development of automated cars that feature so-called external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs).
